  • PG best.

  • great artist

  • super son sur sonny landreth!

  • i dont really know why people always think BB kings vibrato is that great. in my opinion, eric clapton and stevie ray vaughan had much better vibrato

  • @timmy47 It's because of how influential BB King was. If it weren't for him there would be no Eric Clapton SRV, etc.

  • @JaketheSnakeESP being alive before someone doesnt make you better. being someone's influence doesnt make you better. personally, i dont find BB's vibrato to be that great or at least not anything special. imo, clapton had more control of his vibrato. you need a bit more control to do a wider, slower vibrato like he does.

  • @timmy47 I never said "better". The point I was making was that he definitely deserves respect for being one of the first. That's all.

  • @JaketheSnakeESP but that has nothing to do with what i said or what this pole was about. it was about who they think is best at certain things, and i'm simply saying i don't agree with that one. i never said i don't respect his influence on guitar or anything like that, i was making an objective observation on his technique.

  • @timmy47 You said that you didn't get why people think BB King's vibrato is so great, and I was just answering by telling you that how early he was playing that style is probably the reason why. That's all.

  • Best Feel: Eric Clapton

    Best Alternative Picking: John Petrucci

    Best Legato:Allan Holdsworth

    Most Creative/Experimental Player: Robert Fripp

    Just my opinion

  • @joshuaph85 Absolutely, there was al least 2 or 3 more to go.

  • best feel in my opinion is page

  • Guthrie you beast! Nice upload.

  • The Mark Knoffler was perfect!

  • Did you know that not only is Tim Halcomb from English stock, he is actually MORE British than the Brits there. Read about it. His people's roots were traced back to being one of the first in England! :-)

  • who is jimi in this?

    jimi page?

  • Comment removed

  • @mokaey

Jimi Page ? The Led Zeppelin guitarist's name is Jimmy Page. Not Jimi.

The Jimi here is Jimi Hendrix.

  • @BlackenedThunder of course, sorry man i knew that...

ughhh i should not be on youtube when im tired...

  • @BlackenedThunder i meant in the beginning he says: jimi has signed autographs for everyone.

  • @mokaey

Oh ok, I don't know it either.

  • I'd like to see him imitate Marty Friedman.

  • EPIC FAIL LIST: rediculous categories such as best use of capo, best use of e-bow (LOL),best palm muting???. mark knopfler best finger picking, not jeff beck??? best speed paul gilberd, not Shawn Lane or MAB?? Best legato Satriani, not Holdsworth (AH=true legato, not pulloff - hammer on)??? No Frank Gambale on the list!!! (my #1 overall together with Shawn Lane).Zakk Wylde in a top anything list??? More missing guitarists such as Petrucci, Morse, Becker, Birelli La Grene, Greg Howe,..#1 Fail list

  • Best use of guitar - Guthrie Govan

  • 2 30 !

  • STEVE MORSE ANDO JOHN PETRUCCI? hehe

  • Where is Shawn?

  • Check out Phil Keaggy's use of an Ebow in his "Amazing Grace" video. Nobody uses it more effectively in my opinion. Cool video.

  • The fact that Jimmy Page is not here makes the list totally pointless.....he's the god!!

  • @betttola There's other list with Clapton. I cant remember if Page was there.

  • The Satriani lick was like much faster than satch himself could muster..

  • Best chord voicings - G.G Best use of capo - G.G Best strumming - G.G Best use of E-Bow - G.G Best vibrato - BB King Best string bending -G.G Best finger picking - G.G Best hybrid picking - G.G Best tapping - G.G Best palm muting - G.G Best sweep picking - G.G Best speed - G.G Best pinched harmonics - G.G Best use of an effect - G.G Best legato - G.G Best fretting hand reach - G.G Best use of slide - G.G Best feel - G.G Best timing - G.G Overall winner - Guthrie Govan
  • @pepectm But who makes the best french fries?

  • Shawn Lane looks just like Walden from Two and a Half Men on that picture...

  • why isn't guthrie on that list ?

  • @DenSkumle porabably just hasnt released enough material really only one album to his name

  • @DenSkumle which is a damn shame

  • For those who know best what has tapped Steve Lynch ;)

  • weak tone

  • mark knopfler imitation was badass

  • Now, let us see them imitate Guthrie Govan. Hehehe... >:)

  • the best

  • That was quite amazing hearing it for the first time and mark knofler sounded superb and naturally Hendrix sounded the best. Hendrix started "noisy" but became sublimely beautiful & fused, just as the unsurpassable jimi was

  • wether Guthrie comes close or not....HE INSPIRES ME to play more and woodshed more!! Pigeonhole is GAY people. so stop that.

  • I love Guitar Techniques and Guthrie, but I think Derek Trucks should have been the best slide player. Guthrie would have had a hell of a time trying to do Derek Trucks justice. Still, this whole compilation was really well done.

  • Damn that was impressive!!

  • Gilmour's was simply amazing. I wonder if he can imitate John Frusciante.

  • Is he playing a specific song by eric johnson?

also is there a tab out of all the stuff he did on this?

  • I commend him on doing a really good job :) But there's some people you just can't emulate, they've developed their own sound that they're good at they practice it until they own it!

  • wheres jason becker? andy timmons? shawn lane? allan holdsworth?

  • @Timmonsec It was according to the reader's poll list man. So he decided to imitate those guys that made the list. If you want to hear Guthrie do Shawn Lane stuff,he has transcribed and played a bunch of things from Shawn :).

  • Wait, so this is actually guthrie playing everything?!

  • @Antayn Oh yeah.

  • The edge???!!!!!...

  • Is that an actual piece by James Taylor or is that just in his style?

  • @silkpanties101 Guthrie played all the parts

  • @jagex3000 No what I meant was which james taylor song is he playing .. if that is a james taylor song .. i dont know xD

  • i love this tune. but why no acoustic style like "sun house" and "robert johnson" ?

  • AMAZING, we can catch the guitarist feel only by hearing...very strong work

  • dime

  • guthrie, next time i'd love to hear gary moore style! please

  • WOW valla habilidad de Govan ...

  • Oh my god the satch part was fucking intense

  • Dude, o prefer Dimebag on whammy bar and harmonics, those guys who appeared are awesome, but in my opinion, Dimebag is the most talented guitarist w/ whammy bar.

  • @cemeterygates7 damn yes. what you said should be written in the Bible.

  • Where is jason becker??

  • @MauricioJaguan he is not among the most voted guitarrists, that's all. Becker's audience is a lot more particular, i think, i believe only other guitar players listen to jason becker XD

  • the best part was when Tom Morello kicked in

  • Did you notice? The only one he cant imitate perfectly is Jimi Hendrix

  • @Bonehand no one can...Jimi's sound was from another dimension...but he still comes pretty close though lol

  • @Bonehand that was really good jimi imitation though....none of them sound exactly like the real player, if your trying to say jimi's stuff is hard to play, you are mistaken, but i still love his playing

  • @westjt17 well in my opinion the only one he didn't even get close to is Jimi's tone/sound... I mean don't get me wrong I worship Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert and my other heroes - but with a shitload (!!) of practice you come pretty close to what they are doing on the fretboard.

Jimi didn't play very technically refined... more intuitive, unique and with a certain intended sloppyness you CANNOT copy

  • @Bonehand your right, i do give him credit for that.

  • @Bonehand It's actually right! Oh my god! :)

  • @Bonehand Thats cause jimi was inpredictable

  • @Bonehand i dunno, he came pretty damn close on zakk wylde, tom morrello, and joe satriani.

  • Comment removed

  • @Bonehand neither jeff beck!!

  • @Bonehand

I've yet to find anyone perfectly match SRV

  • @MrTHEcrock yeah you are right... I think he is even being a little forgotten throughout the years!

  • @Bonehand He came damn close though. The only thing lacking is Jimi's sloppiness. That's not meant as an insult to Jimi either. Just a fact... He didn't usually pay too much attention to his technique.

  • @JeevesMorris1 yeah thats because he was too busy experimenting and reinventing how to play guitar :)

  • @Bonehand yeah, i agree, hes far too clean to be playing like jimi

  • @Bonehand didnt think he did david gilmour perfect

  • @Bonehand I don't think he was able to imitate David Gilmour perfectly either.

  • @Bonehand i thought he didnt do hendrix that good except for the end of it but he did gilmour great and bb was pretty good

  • is guthrie playing all of this?

  • @AtlasGovan yup. He is.

  • Steve shouldve gotten best use of a whammy bar. :( And where is Jason Becker for best speed?

  • They need to add a "Best at everything" into that readers poll for Guthrie!

Saw him with the Aristocrats 2 nights ago.....amazing!

  • I like how a lot of the samples are takeoffs on the guitarist's signature tune..."Comfortably Numb" for Gilmour, "Pinball Wizard" for Townshend, "Eruption" for EVH, etc.

  • SOUND A MIX OF ERIC JOHSON,LARRY CARLTON.DIRE STR.JEF BECK,STEV VAI,INGWIE M. ETC ETC

    WICH IS OK .

  • The "Paul Gilbert" part was just ridiculous! I wish there was a version of this with the real guitarists instead of Guthrie... you know.... with guthrie in jimi's spot there at the end.

  • @Friday13thTaurus I have to disagree! Obviously Guthries playing is way more emotional as for Govan, hes just fast.

  • I have been listening to this video several times. This is so amazing Guthrie can sound like just anybody. From blues palyers to fusion artists, chicken pickers to speed pickers, high brid pickers....... This is a lot of time taking, peseverience, ditermination and endurence to last as a guitar player of to date. You hear the results. This is a great inspiration to me as a musician.

    Thankyou for sharing!!

Wishing you success and peace, joy & the happiness music brings.. :-)

  • UNfreakin' Believable...Chuck Norris' offspring from a romp in the UK...the truth is out!

  • wheres rhandy =(

  • @Friday13thTaurus

yes and the best alternate picker ever is john mclaughlin

  • lol, soo good, the steve vai 'whammy that almost makes it' was such an awesome touch-excellent nod, there.

and wtf is that sick sweep/tap(?) run at 2:45- during the gilbert part, after the string skipping thing-insane!

  • Best best - Guthrie Govan.

  • Am I insane? Is he playing all of this? My God!

  • O.O mother of god!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • fucking ridiculous. His IMITATION of Mark Knopfler is like the tastiest thing ever

  • could someone tab this?

  • lo banco a Guthrie y su amable pedagogía pero en este tema... es el Cherutti del rock!!!

  • what about best arpegios of jason becker?

  • Hhhmmm..who's the best guitarist of the world?

I really cannot answer this question.,cause I like them all

  • Clever bastard...

  • I really think that every guitar player is the best, but in their own style! so we can't really tell who's the best guitar player !!

  • I really agree that Paul Gilbert should have three awards!

  • Great Job,but no SRV or Buckethead???

  • How about.. Best Guitarist to make the lead singer seem like he's a good musician too? and give it to Slash.

  • Best Sweep Picking - Jason Becker

  • @ZzdeathangelzZ I agree. Also,

    Best Speed - Shawn Lane

  • no dimebag in the poll wtf

  • James Tatlor what a slap in the Face no Randy please

  • Most of these I could never have guess in a billion years without the photos.

    MEH,

  • man.. forgot holdsworth?

  • yeah SRV.... you forget him, nobody can play him.... ^^

  • I just shit myself

  • Mr Guthrie, you clever bugger!

  • More Please

  • Que bien este video!!! Any guitarrist who does not know Guthrie is totally sucking the big banana!! Cualquier guitarrista que no conozca a guthrie esta totalmente mamando!! De los mejores que pueden existir Guthrie Govan puede tocar lo que sea, todavia no me creo que lo haya visto en vivo.. jaja viva Latino Rock Cafe!

  • HOwever AWESOME playing. THank you for Posting.

It is human nature to compare/compete, however musically for me no one is better than the other, to me its entertainment and is style and is personal voice (guitar sound) development.

  • SRV is missing cuz nobody I say NOBODY can PLay Like SRV.

  • @guitarrasco Go check the other video similar to this titled: Guthrie Govan; They're covers Jim but not as we know them. I'd say Guthrie did a damn fine job doing so.

  • Best electric guitarist ever in no order: Govan, Jarzombeck, Jecker

  • @NOBAMAftw

of course, the legendary jason jecker.

  • Yep, perfect imitation of all those guitarists, beautiful ...

  • wow, the david gilmour one is amazing

  • Where is stevie ray vaughan on this list. Perhaps best use of taste just beating out half of the list from the 80's, or perhaps best use of classic blues sound by a white guy, or perhaps just less of a tool bag than yngwie. certainly stanley jordan might have been a better choice for tapping than van halen. he is certainly better at it. but perhaps you shouldn't bitch about meaningless lists - nah... SRV for better use of taste than most of the list.

  • :O Best time of my life

  • Best legato..Allan Holdsworth!

  • @reix25

what about bill connors ???listen to "variations on layla"

  • @reix25 and he also has the best chord voicings!

  • @kiwimcoffee He rivals Eric Johnson on that case

  • Guthrie does an awesome job imitating the greats, and that only shows how much of an accomplished player he is himself, having absorbed all that electric guitar heritage. However, no matter how good he is, the only player he can't really do an appropriate pastiche of is Jimi; it's too fast, it's not the right feeling. I've never heard anyone (I mean really good guitar players) playing accurately like Hendrix, they might get close, but it's never the same. He was truly unique and revolutionary.

  • @craistif I agree. He also doesn't do BB King very well. It's okay in this video, but in the other video he plays way to technically.

  • @MyEverConstantSmile Re 'The other video', he's not supposed to be playing BB King. He's playing to a BB King style backing track. No offense but this singular point has been pointed out at least a billion times on all of those backing track vids :)

  • @MyEverConstantSmile i'm pretty sure the backing track was the only BB King-like thing. he doesn't claim to solo like him there

  • and the song is soooooo cool...

  • Youe voice is so sexy.... And I´m a man! I´m not gay!

  • Best Everything - Guthrie Govan

  • I listened to this song, amazed by the play and just loving the song, until I thought;; Where's Buckethead? He could kill quite a few players on that list. I know he's not legend or commercial or anything and we have to accept that because Bucket simply doesn't want to be. But if you're really into guitar (players) you should know him and know what he's capable of, from shred to the most beautiful pieces of music.. He deserves a spot on that list, at the very fucking least.

  • @cornela1 He's just not as well known. Buckethead is amazing though

  • @cornela1 Read the description. Players who won are outstanding in each category, and they've been doing it quite long. Buckethead is a great guitarist, but the winners were some kind of pioneers in the exceptional use of traditional or innovative techniques.

  • @WencesWasHere I guess you're right. At least bucket could've won a spot for use of effects or the weird tapping shit he does ^^

I think it's mostly the fact that because Bucket isn't commercial/populair (he just doesn't want to be that way) he isn't given a single spot on the list. Not much people know him or if they do they only know Bucket's Jordan and think ''good shred, no music'' or whatever... If only they knew...

  • @cornela1 I agree with you, Buckethead is an awesome guitar player able to play beautiful and shred music, even in the same piece! He's got an awesome vibe too, real musician. He does it for the music and not for the money, the same way guthrie does!, that's really amazing.

  • What, no Johnny Ramone?

  • What is best timing?

  • Did any of you read the description ?

  • Can't believe Derek Trucks didn't win the best use of a slide... :(

  • i think theres a bit of problem here .. i mean .. wheres TOMMY EMMANUEL??

  • Who all came here cuz of the GP article?

  • PAUL GILBERT is my god, my idol and my guitar hero but i love ALL of the guitar players in this video and they are all idols to me!

  • @TheDeepBullet in the words of vinnie moore,"Anything good is there to be inspired by."

  • They should change the order of the words in the title and delete one word.

Current: Guthrie Govan plays: Who's Best?

After change: Who's Best? Guthrie Govan

  • @progjazzfusion troll?

  • i dont understand the hype over this guy...waves, etc just boring shred.

And this vid in particular is horribley pointless. it's easy to lift a few trademark licks of wellknown players but he still does not sound like them any more than the kids trying to play SRV at your crummy local music store with an ibanez thru a boss pedal and peavey amp.

  • @progjazzfusion Uhh You don't understand, guess that's the whole point intit you pseudo intellectual weenie- It's EASY to try and sound (sorry Mr. Progressive Jazz Fusion Jean-Luc Ponty guy, I must have missed your "vid") like you know something in the world now. Perhaps you should learn how to spell before dumping your ignorance in public.

  • @tango3sierra - yeah i was real tired and thought that i spelled that wrong! still this is a really corny thing for him to play. especially from a guy who says in the latest guitar mag that hes on the cover of that he doesnt listen to other guitarists and does his own thing. after reading that interview I came here to check his stuff out but it just sounds like dated late 80s early 90s pseudo shred guitar music to me. i dont like luc ponty hes not real fusion but his old guitarist lives near me

  • @progjazzfusion Dude- Missed it again?! It's a tribute!! There's not a guitar player alive who hasn't listened to other guitar players styles, character, phrasing blah blah blah. It's like saying Led Zeps "Hot dog" was cheesy, of course it was cheesy! But it was fun too. How can you say JLP isn't real Jazz Fusion when guys like Al Di Meola, George Duke, Frank Gambale, Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth, Terje Rypdal, Steve Smith, Daryl Stuermer and Frank Zappa all have been influenced by him-

  • @tango3sierra - whatever you call it, tribute or not, it seems like another exercise in vanity for guth to prove himself as jack of all trades (master of none). I have never heard of JLP being called an influence. I'd call his 70s work more prog than fusion, Too rigidly composed and classical based to be considered real fusion in my book, and some of the players on his albums have said same. Daryl is local and I wouldnt call him a true fusion player either, it's more smooth jazz with rock licks.

  • @progjazzfusion "And this vid in particular is horribley pointless." No it isn't, it paid his bills that month. The magazine paid him to do it, he said he feels embarrassed about it but he needed the money.

  • @Hardysamnin - ok thats cool i can respect that. It just seemed so cheesy. cant blame him then.

  • sweep picking- malmsteen ?!

  • @Neltheros i though that he's arpeggio master

  • So much of what's good about music ceases to make sense when you attempt to analyse it from a 'Who's the best?' perspective - Guthrie Govan

  • The Gilmour part didn't sound very good to me...I don't know maybe it's b/c i'm a die hard Gilmour fan
