@JaketheSnakeESP being alive before someone doesnt make you better. being someone's influence doesnt make you better. personally, i dont find BB's vibrato to be that great or at least not anything special. imo, clapton had more control of his vibrato. you need a bit more control to do a wider, slower vibrato like he does.
@JaketheSnakeESP but that has nothing to do with what i said or what this pole was about. it was about who they think is best at certain things, and i'm simply saying i don't agree with that one. i never said i don't respect his influence on guitar or anything like that, i was making an objective observation on his technique.
@timmy47 You said that you didn't get why people think BB King's vibrato is so great, and I was just answering by telling you that how early he was playing that style is probably the reason why. That's all.
Did you know that not only is Tim Halcomb from English stock, he is actually MORE British than the Brits there. Read about it. His people's roots were traced back to being one of the first in England! :-)

Funny thing is, absolutely none of these players could imitate Guthrie's fusion style, and yes, I mean NONE of them. And I'm the biggest Gilmour enthusiast possibly ever. The only one who could come close would be Di Meola, but not by much. Where's Holdsworth when you need him..
Best chord voicings - G.G Best use of capo - G.G Best strumming - G.G Best use of E-Bow - G.G Best vibrato - BB King Best string bending -G.G Best finger picking - G.G Best hybrid picking - G.G Best tapping - G.G Best palm muting - G.G Best sweep picking - G.G Best speed - G.G Best pinched harmonics - G.G Best use of an effect - G.G Best legato - G.G Best fretting hand reach - G.G Best use of slide - G.G Best feel - G.G Best timing - G.G Overall winner - Guthrie Govan
That was quite amazing hearing it for the first time and mark knofler sounded superb and naturally Hendrix sounded the best. Hendrix started "noisy" but became sublimely beautiful & fused, just as the unsurpassable jimi was
I love Guitar Techniques and Guthrie, but I think Derek Trucks should have been the best slide player. Guthrie would have had a hell of a time trying to do Derek Trucks justice. Still, this whole compilation was really well done.
I commend him on doing a really good job :) But there's some people you just can't emulate, they've developed their own sound that they're good at they practice it until they own it!
@Timmonsec It was according to the reader's poll list man. So he decided to imitate those guys that made the list. If you want to hear Guthrie do Shawn Lane stuff,he has transcribed and played a bunch of things from Shawn :).
Dude, o prefer Dimebag on whammy bar and harmonics, those guys who appeared are awesome, but in my opinion, Dimebag is the most talented guitarist w/ whammy bar.
@MauricioJaguan he is not among the most voted guitarrists, that's all. Becker's audience is a lot more particular, i think, i believe only other guitar players listen to jason becker XD
@Bonehand that was really good jimi imitation though....none of them sound exactly like the real player, if your trying to say jimi's stuff is hard to play, you are mistaken, but i still love his playing
@westjt17 well in my opinion the only one he didn't even get close to is Jimi's tone/sound... I mean don't get me wrong I worship Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert and my other heroes - but with a shitload (!!) of practice you come pretty close to what they are doing on the fretboard.
Jimi didn't play very technically refined... more intuitive, unique and with a certain intended sloppyness you CANNOT copy
@Bonehand He came damn close though. The only thing lacking is Jimi's sloppiness. That's not meant as an insult to Jimi either. Just a fact... He didn't usually pay too much attention to his technique.
I like how a lot of the samples are takeoffs on the guitarist's signature tune..."Comfortably Numb" for Gilmour, "Pinball Wizard" for Townshend, "Eruption" for EVH, etc.
The "Paul Gilbert" part was just ridiculous! I wish there was a version of this with the real guitarists instead of Guthrie... you know.... with guthrie in jimi's spot there at the end.
I have been listening to this video several times. This is so amazing Guthrie can sound like just anybody. From blues palyers to fusion artists, chicken pickers to speed pickers, high brid pickers....... This is a lot of time taking, peseverience, ditermination and endurence to last as a guitar player of to date. You hear the results. This is a great inspiration to me as a musician.
Thankyou for sharing!!

@guitarrasco Go check the other video similar to this titled: Guthrie Govan; They're covers Jim but not as we know them. I'd say Guthrie did a damn fine job doing so.
Where is stevie ray vaughan on this list. Perhaps best use of taste just beating out half of the list from the 80's, or perhaps best use of classic blues sound by a white guy, or perhaps just less of a tool bag than yngwie. certainly stanley jordan might have been a better choice for tapping than van halen. he is certainly better at it. but perhaps you shouldn't bitch about meaningless lists - nah... SRV for better use of taste than most of the list.
Guthrie does an awesome job imitating the greats, and that only shows how much of an accomplished player he is himself, having absorbed all that electric guitar heritage. However, no matter how good he is, the only player he can't really do an appropriate pastiche of is Jimi; it's too fast, it's not the right feeling. I've never heard anyone (I mean really good guitar players) playing accurately like Hendrix, they might get close, but it's never the same. He was truly unique and revolutionary.
@MyEverConstantSmile Re 'The other video', he's not supposed to be playing BB King. He's playing to a BB King style backing track. No offense but this singular point has been pointed out at least a billion times on all of those backing track vids :)
I listened to this song, amazed by the play and just loving the song, until I thought;; Where's Buckethead? He could kill quite a few players on that list. I know he's not legend or commercial or anything and we have to accept that because Bucket simply doesn't want to be. But if you're really into guitar (players) you should know him and know what he's capable of, from shred to the most beautiful pieces of music.. He deserves a spot on that list, at the very fucking least.
@cornela1 Read the description. Players who won are outstanding in each category, and they've been doing it quite long. Buckethead is a great guitarist, but the winners were some kind of pioneers in the exceptional use of traditional or innovative techniques.
@WencesWasHere I guess you're right. At least bucket could've won a spot for use of effects or the weird tapping shit he does ^^
I think it's mostly the fact that because Bucket isn't commercial/populair (he just doesn't want to be that way) he isn't given a single spot on the list. Not much people know him or if they do they only know Bucket's Jordan and think ''good shred, no music'' or whatever... If only they knew...
@cornela1 I agree with you, Buckethead is an awesome guitar player able to play beautiful and shred music, even in the same piece! He's got an awesome vibe too, real musician. He does it for the music and not for the money, the same way guthrie does!, that's really amazing.
i dont understand the hype over this guy...waves, etc just boring shred.
And this vid in particular is horribley pointless. it's easy to lift a few trademark licks of wellknown players but he still does not sound like them any more than the kids trying to play SRV at your crummy local music store with an ibanez thru a boss pedal and peavey amp.
@progjazzfusion Uhh You don't understand, guess that's the whole point intit you pseudo intellectual weenie- It's EASY to try and sound (sorry Mr. Progressive Jazz Fusion Jean-Luc Ponty guy, I must have missed your "vid") like you know something in the world now. Perhaps you should learn how to spell before dumping your ignorance in public.
@tango3sierra - yeah i was real tired and thought that i spelled that wrong! still this is a really corny thing for him to play. especially from a guy who says in the latest guitar mag that hes on the cover of that he doesnt listen to other guitarists and does his own thing. after reading that interview I came here to check his stuff out but it just sounds like dated late 80s early 90s pseudo shred guitar music to me. i dont like luc ponty hes not real fusion but his old guitarist lives near me
@progjazzfusion Dude- Missed it again?! It's a tribute!! There's not a guitar player alive who hasn't listened to other guitar players styles, character, phrasing blah blah blah. It's like saying Led Zeps "Hot dog" was cheesy, of course it was cheesy! But it was fun too. How can you say JLP isn't real Jazz Fusion when guys like Al Di Meola, George Duke, Frank Gambale, Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth, Terje Rypdal, Steve Smith, Daryl Stuermer and Frank Zappa all have been influenced by him-
@tango3sierra - whatever you call it, tribute or not, it seems like another exercise in vanity for guth to prove himself as jack of all trades (master of none). I have never heard of JLP being called an influence. I'd call his 70s work more prog than fusion, Too rigidly composed and classical based to be considered real fusion in my book, and some of the players on his albums have said same. Daryl is local and I wouldnt call him a true fusion player either, it's more smooth jazz with rock licks.
@progjazzfusion "And this vid in particular is horribley pointless." No it isn't, it paid his bills that month. The magazine paid him to do it, he said he feels embarrassed about it but he needed the money.
PG best.

Perhaps you should learn how to spell before dumping your ignorance in public.
tango3sierra 8 months ago
@tango3sierra - yeah i was real tired and thought that i spelled that wrong! still this is a really corny thing for him to play. especially from a guy who says in the latest guitar mag that hes on the cover of that he doesnt listen to other guitarists and does his own thing. after reading that interview I came here to check his stuff out but it just sounds like dated late 80s early 90s pseudo shred guitar music to me. i dont like luc ponty hes not real fusion but his old guitarist lives near me
progjazzfusion 8 months ago
@progjazzfusion Dude- Missed it again?! It's a tribute!! There's not a guitar player alive who hasn't listened to other guitar players styles, character, phrasing blah blah blah. It's like saying Led Zeps "Hot dog" was cheesy, of course it was cheesy! But it was fun too. How can you say JLP isn't real Jazz Fusion when guys like Al Di Meola, George Duke, Frank Gambale, Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth, Terje Rypdal, Steve Smith, Daryl Stuermer and Frank Zappa all have been influenced by him-
tango3sierra 8 months ago

@Hardysamnin - ok thats cool i can respect that. It just seemed so cheesy. cant blame him then.

So much of what's good about music ceases to make sense when you attempt to analyse it from a 'Who's the best?' perspective - Guthrie Govan
