  • Lol! I like how you were explaining how to sit in the chairs 3:33... XDD

  • Imagine if the Japanese took as much care to assimilate into American culture as this jackass does for Japanese culture. Then the world would be a better place

  • I would sit wherever the fuck I want because I'm more important than any stupid fucking gook in Japan

  • pretty awesome. make more vids!

  • Normally you don't need to worry too much about this.

  • so to make things short if youre not important than you choose the worse seat right ? and the closest one to the exit so you can greet/run away ( choose one ) properly :)

  • the right place will be.... the table?

  • I'm glad we're labled as "morons" lol

  • 「すみませんお伺いしてもよろしいですか?」の方が簡潔です。

  • This is so interesting and I'm surprised that I haven't found you earlier! You have another subscriber, sir.

  • I thought it was so that man of importance had his back to the wall so that he could see if danger approached ....

  • i really like this video!! i had no idea that that was so important, and i know this will probably sound stupid because he was born and raised there but he speaks really well!!! hahaha im so jealous ^_^ ありがとう ございます!!

  • I Had No Idea ? :)

  • This video was so simple, but great!!! I had NO idea there was a proper way to sit in a room. I thought you were going to talk about how to SIT in the CHAIR, not WHERE to sit, so I found this terribly interesting. Please, please, PLEASE make more videos like this! I have just subscribed and am happy this morning to be viewing your videos for the first time. Thank you!

  • Useful. Thx for sharing,

  • hi i need hepl to find the video of " chotto ukaga...... i look in a lot of the pages but no......

  • @rsilvia1999 it's on J4M62, watch?v=91KyRDH5MUg

  • very interesting! i've never heard this before. i would have sat there anyway for those exact reasons but never knew i SHOULD. haha

as far meishi~ other than accepting it with both hands and actually looking at it, is there anything else?

  • Good stuff, but it helps adding subtitles and translation.

  • i guessed the wrong one LOL

  • I actually figured out by myself where one should have been seated, if in a position of inferiority.

It's actually a play on the superior person's perceptions/feelings. I sort of do this kind of choices when I really want to plead for something, even though it's not everywhere the norm.

    One can pick up signals.

Difference is, in Japan it seems to be the norm, and it's expected.

  • The one thing I like about Japanese culture is that respect is built in.

  • My country is opposed in manners, that's a strong reason why I like Japan better.

Giving sits to an older person? never

Saving best sits ? NEVER EVER

    yea about opposite in everything

  • Don't be mistaken, it's not like in Japan they give sits to older people on a crowded subway train or something. It's same as everywhere. The respect thing is present in work-related or family situations.

  • it's a bit better

  • I like this, it was really informative

  • i love how the seat i thought was ideal was the complete oppsite to the actual one

  • This is awesome. This is the kinda stuff that's difficult to find out but is really important.

  • That was cool. I look forward to seeing mroe...

  • wow japanese culture is different from western culture

  • Very helpful. Thanks!

  • U r charismatic guy ;)

  • wow japan focuses too much on superiority.

  • どうもありがとう

    ぼくわべんきよわつる

    ありがと!

  • please make more vids like this~

  • definitely make more videos

  • So this is just for business, correct? What happens in the situation where it is more casual? Ex: Going to dentist/doctor/other non-personal business related offices, or how about when you are meeting for coffee with a friend?

  • Wow thats extremely interesting culturally O.o

  • The whole sitting thing is kinda like human feng-shui, right?

  • MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS PLEASE!

  • Really good stuff man!.. I'd really like to see more stuff like this that addresses etiquette and manors of everyday Japanese life. I'd also like to see you visit historical places and landmarks and tell about the history of them. I Went to Japan myself, and will be moving there soon enough with a double major in English and Japanese Language and Literature. I commented on your "Kamakura" video, because I was there too! : ) Tell more about the history of the places and landmarks you visit.

  • arigato gozaimasu for this information, you're great, I'm gonna subscribe ^^

  • awesome video, would love to see more!

  • what happens if you dont

  • Thanks man

  • This is so nice xD~ japanese culture have lots of details~ even how they eat :3, i want to learn the more i can! plz keep up the good work *_*)/

  • Could just be my imagination but i swear that guys has asian heritage maybe just a quarter. That is not really important though.

Great lesson. I will definitely sub you, because if this vid is any indication you have a lots of useful culture and language to share. Thank you.

  • dude my song was used in that at 3:57 wow that's from the beggining of my spartan wars videos

  • I have a love/hate relationship with all of the tiny yet extremely important nuances of the Japanese language/culture.

I love it because it's unique and intriguing, but I hate it because, as a foreigner, I haven't been predisposed to any of this so if I went to Japan, I'd come off super rude. DX

    Rawr. >:

Still, great video! Who knew where and the way someone sits was so important...

  • MOAR!!! :D

  • ~ありがとう~ ヴぃくたー 先生

i actually made a youtube profile just to write comments on this channel( and to watch flagged stuff of course)...this channel has really been useful along with my own self studying..THANK YOU!

  • YES! I AM interested in this kinda stuff. I like your other videos too!

Q: You say よろしくおねがいします BEFORE even saying your name?

It feels a bit odd to me because I'm more inclined to use that AFTER a conversation. Could you please explain it's use there? Is it simply part of the greeting?

  • Dude, you are really awesome I love some of your clips. But could you make them more informative? You repeat and explain one thing several times and it kinda suxs:)

  • Yes, please keep up with the random culture aspect of Today's Japan on your site - it makes it "omoushiroi".

    Thanks

  • Interesting shizzle.

What if the chair in the best position was the least comfortable chair?... you wouldn't want someone more important than you to be stuck in an uncomfortable seat.

  • I got a question for you, Chris. Is that so much the way of the culture that EVERY person follows it...even more so if it's one of the important ones? I'm wondering if you know of anyone who's become one of those "important" people and is still humble enough that, when given the choice first, would choose the left (bad) side...'cause that's someone I'd actually want to sit by the door for.

  • The other reason the important people get the 'deepest seat' or furthest from the door is so that the less important people can protect them from any potential attackers. This is true.

  • I just came back to Japan after being away for 13 yrs, and that was SUPER helpful. How about bowing, I never know what to do, and I kind of avoid it so I don't look like a silly gaijin. Is that bad?

  • cercl!~

  • His voice seems to change completely when he starts speaking Japanese. Very interesting! :]

The voice and the video that is.

  • This was useful! Thanks!

  • great lesson!

  • as usual gimme links us to some really good work ^_^

  • I would have chosen the seat in the deepest corner, just to fill the room the right way..mh you know what I mean?? I think, if every visitor would choose the nearest chair, then the next visitors would have to walk more to find a seat (which is bad).

But that's just my logic (^□^*)

Chris you are a cool sensei!! thank you

  • This guy is cool... I subbed..

  • loved this video man! this is the stuff we non-japanese can't learn until we actually come to the country, so it's great to know beforehand. thank you!

  • excellent lesson!

  • ☆☆☆☆☆ Wow! Again very interesting video! Please continue to make videos about customs and proper etiquette in Japan. Here in States the savvy buisness man/woman would pick the seat that you said would be reserved for the most senior person. The reason for that is that you want to own the room and show strength and domination. You want to sit where you can directly confront the person or people you are meeting to size him/them up also and vice versa.

  • nice video, Yeah DEFINITELY make more, for sure will check them out.

  • that was an interesting lesson! Always heard about this sitting arrangements, but haven't learned it till now, pretty interesting stuff

  • Sweet video dude, once again.

  • From what I can tell from this video is the Japanese don't have equality in their system they have a very formal class or cast system. Anyway you have made yet another classic video, with professionalism and good taste. I also like the additional touch of Americanism added on top.

  • WOW! This is too high level lesson for morons!!! Even some Japanese don't know about it. Good job Chris!

  • awesome vid man some really useful stuff in this and your last one. Thnaks

  • Thanks for the vid! I didn't know there was a proper way to know where to sit?

Also, thanks for reminding us the phrase you taught us! I still think you should teach us more phrases in a slower pace, like saying the words sloooowly for us japanese beginners...(like me...^^") I want to make sure I learn japanese correctly by saying it correctly.

*Note: I notice that in the word "desu", you don't mention the "u" at the end. Is that in ANY sentence you use "desu"?

  • Whoa I never knew any of this! It might be applicable out of a Japanese context lol. Thanks~

  • wow nice advice. hey could u throw in sum jepanese idioms in the future?

  • woohoo got it right!! :D

  • This was great! well done Chris

  • Really interesting.

Chris may want to consider the difference between a phrase and word, other than that, very helpful indeed.

  • Know about the business card thing, but didn't know about the seating position thing. Other than drawing parallels to western culture, where you would wait to be invited to sit somewhere or be familiar to what is a persons favourite seat.....cool vid, thanks : )

  • thank you for showing idiotic Japanese cultural norms that should have been left in the stone ages. (sarcasm)

  • This was good. I knew it but never talked about it on cam. Great job!

  • I so knew the answers :O Those two chairs look like the throne for king&queen. Those smaller chairs sucked, how did you fit in there? :D

  • Thanks you guys for all of your comments.

  • MOre vids man

  • thank you!!!

  • Informative, I lol'd at 'Eh?' at the end.

  • this very educational

  • I'm glad you enjoy it! If you have any requests, please let me know.

  • When Chris says he was "born and raised in Japan" and then he says he "has been living in Japan for 15 years".

It makes it sounds like he is 15 years old. haha

Cool video, seems like some potentially useful information. All the different customs seem a little daunting at first glance but I'm sure it just takes some getting used to.

  • I´d like to see more of this for sure, along with your ordinary show. I would really appreciate that new idea you mentioned, "Japanese for total noobs" or what ever you are goin to call it

  • thank you!

  • When I saw the title, I thought this vid would be about sitting on tatami with your legs tucked underneath.

    Useful info. Nice work.

  • This was something I've never actually heard before. Great video!

  • Thank you very much for your kind comment!

  • when you receive a business card you have to grab it with both hands and say something about it.

  • you should definitley make another video like that

  • Thank you. Great insight. I need more, fill my moronic brain with more.

  • Sense I am so awesome I would pick the best seat of course. So technically I was right for choosing the best seat.

  • Totally! lol

  • yo chris ur vidz r very helpfu!!!! its has another pesective on japanese life!!

  • I picked the seat that indicates all men are created equal, but then I went with the one that indicates no one is superior to anyone else. Apparently I was wrong.

  • It's was a nice thought anyway, if a bit naive.

  • he reminds me of young Keanu Reeves.

  • You rock buddy!!

  • I don't see a Keanu Reeves in a all Caucasian guy. Keanu is mixed and half looking.

  • Chris isn't an all caucasian guy. A quick click on his screenname would tell you that.

  • you should make a video on how to bow... :)

  • I like these videos. So when I go to Japan this summer, I will know what to do!

  • I failed. I picked the best seat and was wrong.

  • Off with her head! LOL!

  • The customs are rather strange for the Japanese.

  • Actually not strange for them. Strange for non-Japanese.

  • Japanese culture is very differant from us.
