Imagine if the Japanese took as much care to assimilate into American culture as this jackass does for Japanese culture. Then the world would be a better place
so to make things short if youre not important than you choose the worse seat right ? and the closest one to the exit so you can greet/run away ( choose one ) properly :)

I have just subscribed and am happy this morning to be viewing your videos for the first time. Thank you!
i really like to see your videos like this. these small things u teaches are really important in business and sosial life...keep doing this more...im learning!xD
dam if i was to go to japan id better be dam sure to get to the top of the pyramid asap cause i dont lik having to suck up to ppl and worrying about all that nonsense
I actually figured out by myself where one should have been seated, if in a position of inferiority.
It's actually a play on the superior person's perceptions/feelings. I sort of do this kind of choices when I really want to plead for something, even though it's not everywhere the norm.
One can pick up signals.
Difference is, in Japan it seems to be the norm, and it's expected.
Don't be mistaken, it's not like in Japan they give sits to older people on a crowded subway train or something. It's same as everywhere. The respect thing is present in work-related or family situations.
So this is just for business, correct? What happens in the situation where it is more casual? Ex: Going to dentist/doctor/other non-personal business related offices, or how about when you are meeting for coffee with a friend?
Really good stuff man!.. I'd really like to see more stuff like this that addresses etiquette and manors of everyday Japanese life. I'd also like to see you visit historical places and landmarks and tell about the history of them. I Went to Japan myself, and will be moving there soon enough with a double major in English and Japanese Language and Literature. I commented on your "Kamakura" video, because I was there too! : ) Tell more about the history of the places and landmarks you visit.
or at least you'd wish you could because your important business proposition just got canned for disrespecting the president =P This show was informative, more of this please!
i just love japan they so interesting and fascinathing i think how they live and are is just beutiful i would love to know more about the culture and stuff and know to speak they cute and pretty language too ^^
I have a love/hate relationship with all of the tiny yet extremely important nuances of the Japanese language/culture.
I love it because it's unique and intriguing, but I hate it because, as a foreigner, I haven't been predisposed to any of this so if I went to Japan, I'd come off super rude. DX

Q: You say よろしくおねがいします BEFORE even saying your name?
It feels a bit odd to me because I'm more inclined to use that AFTER a conversation. Could you please explain it's use there? Is it simply part of the greeting?
Dude, you are really awesome I love some of your clips. But could you make them more informative? You repeat and explain one thing several times and it kinda suxs:)
What if the chair in the best position was the least comfortable chair?... you wouldn't want someone more important than you to be stuck in an uncomfortable seat.
I got a question for you, Chris. Is that so much the way of the culture that EVERY person follows it...even more so if it's one of the important ones? I'm wondering if you know of anyone who's become one of those "important" people and is still humble enough that, when given the choice first, would choose the left (bad) side...'cause that's someone I'd actually want to sit by the door for.
The other reason the important people get the 'deepest seat' or furthest from the door is so that the less important people can protect them from any potential attackers. This is true.
I just came back to Japan after being away for 13 yrs, and that was SUPER helpful. How about bowing, I never know what to do, and I kind of avoid it so I don't look like a silly gaijin. Is that bad?
I would have chosen the seat in the deepest corner, just to fill the room the right way..mh you know what I mean?? I think, if every visitor would choose the nearest chair, then the next visitors would have to walk more to find a seat (which is bad).

It makes it sounds like he is 15 years old. haha
