  • Disorders of attachment in pervasive developmental disorders such as ASD, can be re-established through a Developmental based approach, by facilitating primary caregiver/child reciprocal affect connections. For example: slowing down, following the child's natural intent or lead and spontaneously establishing through bodily and facial non-verbal gestures simple pleasurable back and forth engagement. This begins to DEVELOP- MENTALLY set up the foundations for Meaningful back and forth co-regulated

  • engagement, whereby additional affect variations NOT based upon redirecting but based upon the Developmental foundations of following the child's natural lead become possible leading to two-way emotional problem solving, use of representation (held ideas apart from ALL or NOTHING reactions) and the natural and not the robotic emergence of spontaneous (expressive) language. Actually, the underlying foundations that ALWAYS supports expressive spoken language is the ability to engage in

  • pleasurable affect reciprocal gesturing; without this language does not emerge or emerges in a highly robotic and mechanical fashion. The underlying Affect-developmental foundations of deepening attachment by following the child's natural intent or lead (the underlying emotional foundations) are typically NOT engaged in the methodologies of ABA. Redirecting the child is by any stretch of the imagination is counter to Deepening attachment and developing an integrative social-cognitive-foundation.
