this is insane.....I taped this off the TV in 1976 onto a Memorex cassette by hanging the mic in front of the speaker...still have the tape...listened to it constantly for at least 20 yrs..in 78 they came to the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver for high school bands....after the performance they took question from us kids......EPIC....
@MasterBlasterMusic Unfortunately Jon Faddis isn't at this gig. His high-F screams under MF's high-G's were a cool part of the album recording. But, I like the added interlude in this live recording, though. Brian740, you have some amazing stuff! Keep on posting!
@7139462314 lol no man, I'm -- or I was -- the teen in the audience with the silly blue festival cap on, bobbing my head. I freaked out when I stumbled upon this video and saw me there. Like, how often does that happen in YouTube? A random audience shot from thirty-four freakin years ago... and there you are!
@Macaholic - You're at 1:04... That's 2 seconds of your 15 minutes of fame! LOL - Seriously, I would have LOVED to see Maynard live... AWESOME sound! And, for the record, you bobbed your head in good timing... lol ;)
Maynard was a God to some of us high school jazz band geeks. He was an old big band guy that went electric in the 70's and 80's and completely won us over. His young bands were always great and he knocked it out of the park with his trumpet!
I'll bet Maynard never knew. They were probably rehearsing one day and the dude said "Hey, I play a little bongo..." and the rest was history. Many of these musicians are multi-talented. Just look at Arturo Sandoval, trumpeter, piano player, singer, percussion, etc...
That's what's known as jammin' how cool is it that just about everybody in the band gets to play like that. Just proves that Maynard was more than a fine trumpet player--He was a catalyst for other musicians to cut loose and swing--that is someone who is so secure in his own virtuosity that he doesn't mind sharing the spotlight.with other talent. Thank God for al the recordings and videos.. . ..
btw i must say this is like the only video i actually see maynard turn red while playing lol. man is pretty damn amazing, he was in great shape for this co0ncert!
i met maynard a little more than 30 years ago. and he said to me: 'three'
that was how many albums i thought i could get him to sign at once. the only signitures i ever got for myself from a musician. if you want to call him that. in his case, i think god would do as well. evolution is a beautiful thing.
Got you beat....I got him to buzz in my mouthpiece........and to a kid I was in "nirvana"...In fact, I've seen him since the early 70's and was always starstruck!. My father is a bone player/leader and got me into the groove of the boss when I was very young.....
OMG!! I just stumbled across this video. I was at this concert! And there I am, sixteen years old, in the goofy Stage Band Festival hat, at 01:03. LMAO!!!!
The computer screen just cracked.
