Elizabeth who? Miss Oregon 1993? She won't be able to give Lea a run for her money. She'd be a grandma by now. Won't even be able to run! Ha ha ha ha ha!
@annief31 actually in this version, Lea did have a bit of problem staying on pitch (that C#) and Liz was very much on pitch during her performance. Granted Lea my be a great broadway performer and actor, but she does have a bit of trouble staying on pitch during her singing...

Love her vibrato -- and her ability to carry the emotions across even if she's not performing on a Broadway stage in costume and in character. Such a talented lady!
@mdiamse: I noticed that, too. KerryWho?(TM) sounds squeaky. And old. But so does HelenWho?(TM). I hope their fans here realize how ridiculous they are daring to compare their performances with Lea's! Ha ha ha!
@barredowl24: Good advice. Here's a better one, though: This is a LEA SALONGA video, so die-hard fans of the UNTALENTED with UGLY VOICES KerryWho?(TM), SuttonWho?(TM), and HelenWho?(TM) need to stop dragging the names of their UNTALENTED with UGLY VOICES idols in this video. Lol!
Children, please! Can't we all get along? Lea, Sutton, and Kerry are all incredible talents who bring their own unique perspective to the song. What's the sense in debating which is better? They're all good. If you don't like it, don't listen... but let's not criticize someone's talent just because we feel someone else does it better. Just enjoy the music and leave the useless debates to Faux News and politicians.
What I like about Salonga is that in addition to her powerful and very beautiful voice, when she sings, she tells a story. There's always something beneath the surface. Her singing touches you. So much unlike Kerry Who(TM) and Sutton Who(TM). You guys are so funny, @aaprato and @mdiamse!
@joshgardell You don't have to bash the singers. They're all amazingly talented. What makes Lea different is that she puts a lot of emotion into it visually. We all have different tastes don't be rude. Personally, I prefer Kerry's voice because she places all her emotion there. Yeah, she can look like a wooden plank, but I happened to not be looking at Lea while she was singing and it didn't feel the same.
@joshgardell I think Sutton tells a pretty good story. Not the emotional roller coaster Lea takes you on, but I wouldn't hate on Sutton's, it's quite good. Kerry is another story.....
@aaprato: lol! Kerry Who(TM) and Sutton Who(TM) don't hold a candle to Lea Salonga. Kerry Who has a SQUEAKY (my pet peeve) and old-sounding voice (imagine a 90-year old perofrming in a role for a 20 year-old), while Sutton Who has underdeveloped vocal technique. These people who compare Salonga with them are tone-deaf! Ha ha ha!
I don't like these people who keep bringing up Kerry Ellis' name in other people's videos. As in those many Wicked videos of Idina Menzel and other actresses, my favorite Kerry gets unnecessarily shredded into pieces! I LOVE Lea Salonga and don't need to compare her to other actresses.
I love Lea Salonga and she has a great voice! I just feel that this wasn't a strong performance. She sounded beautiful, but there was nothing under the surface. Her acting was very general. I think Sutton Foster does the best version of this song. She perfectly encompasses TELLING the story as well as mastering the vocal technique required to sing this song.
She gives original Broadway cast member Judy Kuhn a run for her money in this song. Come to think of it. I love Lea's version of Colors Of The Wind more than that of the original, Judy Kuhn.
So beautiful in more than one way!! : ) I have embarrassingly attached a video. I only hope you will be so kind as to visit my page and listen to a few lea salonga songs I have "tried" lol. I hope you will comment since I hope to improve! : )
There will be those who are born with voices better than Lea's, but theirs always lack Lea's ability to tell a story through her singing. I love her distinct crystal-clear voice and how it gives me goosebumps. My highest respect to this woman.

Just doesn't have the purity and the freshness or the delicacy that the role needs!
Beautiful voice Lea but sorry Kerry Ellis owns this song!!!!!!!!!
Also, it doesn't move enough vocally, only her facial features put any emotion into it at all, so if this was only a recording it would fall so flat and become *very* samey.
Safe singer. She just doesn't have *it*. Missing that flare here Lea.
Lea Salonga is a wonderful singer, both LIVE and on recordings. She has a gifted voice, and she 'gets' the songs, alright.
However, I just like 'hearing' her; not 'watching' her. There's something about her facial expressions that I cannot empathize with (sigh!). Perhaps it has to do with looking more and more like Neve Campbell.
This video, is quite an exception. She is actually like-able here.
lea's version is so inocent and heartfelt i almost cry listening on cd of this concert.she had a better version than of kerry ellis and judy khun .bring this great girl back on broadway!
It's a "cultured" voice... nothing more and nothing special. Her voice can't stand out in the Broadway because they all sound quite the same. Her voice is generic but she's an outstanding performer. She's for the stage and not supposed to be lined with divas and pop singers. She's known in the theater world and in Broadway... but you can't say the world knows her the way the world recognizes artists that are blessed with the natural talent and voice.
you're dead wrong on your last statement. it is in fact the opposite. lea is well-known in the theater world as having this angelic,crystal-clear , full-tone voice thats a pleasure to listen to. she's a broadway elite & have quite an impressive body of work to her credit. she's even a disney princess twice over if u know what i mean.
I like Lea a LOT, but the version here on Youtube done by Sutton Foster is MUCH better. You can hear much more emotion as she puts herself deeply in the part of the woman's dilemma. It comes across right away, you can really hear it, even in the version on here where she is just rehearsing the song.
Check it out by typing into the search field: Sutton Foster AFA Benefit.
No makeup. No wardrobe, and it can still bring you to tears.
This is from the musical Chess. A great Cold War/star-crossed lovers story and some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard in a Broadway play. It no longer runs and is hard to find videos of, but you can read the synopsis on Wikipedia. The music was so popular when the play debuted that some of the songs topped the billboard charts. You might end up recognizing some other songs.
@Taniathegoddess In most productions, it's performed by Sveltelana, the wife of the hero, Anatoly. Some productions will give it to Florence, his mistress, instead. The point is that she realizes Anatoly will never come back to her, and she's so unhappy. But she doesn't have to be. She may just as well move on and become part of someone's story that would actually include her.

I think Lea Salonga is an exquisite performer, but I have to agree with douchehater on this one. This is a showcase performance, not a characterization. Not that it always has to be, but for me it's what makes it interesting.
i agree w/ Felicity, it's just a matter of taste & opinion really. i like helen's version for she has a nice singing voice no doubt... but i like lea's more simply bec. lea has this sweeter, angelic tone in her voice. no wonder that lea's resume. body of works is much more impressive than helen's... now, that is my opinion!

Helen vs. Lea
Helen sang the song in a long-running production. She sings it in character, with the emotional punctuation that the character, Florence, experiences - She's exhausted, disgusted, forlorn, disillusioned, regretful.
Lea sings it as a showcase for her over-trained voice. It's pretty, but soulless and full of artifice.
What a load of bunckum. How can you over train a voice??? As you said it was sung in a long running production. Take a look at this video.......It's a one off show and songs were taken from different productions. As an independent performer of those songs, in my opinion....she takes some beating!!!
Ok, if you say a voice can be over trained, then I will have to believe you because I am not an expert on the matter. I can only go by what I am hearing and if I was listening to them all on CD or the radio etc, I know who's singing voice I would prefer. If I wanted to watch emotion and acting, I would go and watch a play:) If Lea's voice is evidence of over training, then a lot of singers had better get back in training to try and reach the same stage :)
douchehater: I wouldn't go to say that Lea's version is full of artifice. She's just a good singer, and if you've heard her sing "On My Own", or seen in Miss Saigon you'd hardly say her interpretations are soulless.
ovitatirac: Helen's resume may be smaller, but she's in a relatively unknown country. Add the fact that musical singers aren't popular singers and that makes her virtually unknown. But she's been in good works too: Kristina, Chess, My Fair Lady. She also sings folk and pop songs.
All I'm going to say, since there's a huge argument here, is that both Helen and Lea are good in their own ways. Most of it's just a matter of preference, so don't flame someone who likes Lea or vice versa. You might not understand why someone likes this person, but just say, "I don't understand it" and leave it at that. Everyone has the right to their own opinion.
although a lot of singers have sung this song with their beautiful voices this is so far the most soulfull! so expressive! she didn't just sang the song, she became the character in the musical.

there's no emotion in her voice... great voice, but all the emotion is in her physical actions... there's power in her voice, but no pain, no hurt or passion
Close your eyes and listen to her....her voice carries you to the realm of emotion the song depicts...clearly you do ont know a damn thing about music. I'm ot a Broadway snob...but when a voice swells in my chest and carries the orchestration...that is emotion. Miss Lea is emotional in all her preformances even without seeing her actions....she is fantastic.
lea salonga is the pride of filipino music industry. especially when she played kim in miss saigon! she is the best! i love the way she sung every song...I love her version as well of on omy own for les miserables
I love Lea!

It's a "cultured" voice... nothing more and nothing special. Her voice can't stand out in the Broadway because they all sound quite the same. Her voice is generic but she's an outstanding performer. She's for the stage and not supposed to be lined with divas and pop singers. She's known in the theater world and in Broadway... but you can't say the world knows her the way the world recognizes artists that are blessed with the natural talent and voice.
broadwaybebop 2 years ago
you're dead wrong on your last statement. it is in fact the opposite. lea is well-known in the theater world as having this angelic,crystal-clear , full-tone voice thats a pleasure to listen to. she's a broadway elite & have quite an impressive body of work to her credit. she's even a disney princess twice over if u know what i mean.

No makeup. No wardrobe, and it can still bring you to tears.

anyone know the story behind this song? the lyrics?
Taniathegoddess 2 years ago
This is from the musical Chess. A great Cold War/star-crossed lovers story and some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard in a Broadway play. It no longer runs and is hard to find videos of, but you can read the synopsis on Wikipedia. The music was so popular when the play debuted that some of the songs topped the billboard charts. You might end up recognizing some other songs.

it is still playing in u.k... its on tour, its chess in concert which is being performed across the u.k :)

Yes, the best and only performance is the original by Judy Kuhn.

According to music critics, if Lea sings a song, you can say THAT THE SONG HAS BEEN SUNG!

I think Lea Salonga is an exquisite performer, but I have to agree with douchehater on this one. This is a showcase performance, not a characterization. Not that it always has to be, but for me it's what makes it interesting.
holidaysinsweden 2 years ago
i agree w/ Felicity, it's just a matter of taste & opinion really. i like helen's version for she has a nice singing voice no doubt... but i like lea's more simply bec. lea has this sweeter, angelic tone in her voice. no wonder that lea's resume. body of works is much more impressive than helen's... now, that is my opinion!

Helen vs. Lea
Helen sang the song in a long-running production. She sings it in character, with the emotional punctuation that the character, Florence, experiences - She's exhausted, disgusted, forlorn, disillusioned, regretful.
Lea sings it as a showcase for her over-trained voice. It's pretty, but soulless and full of artifice.
douchehater 2 years ago
What a load of bunckum. How can you over train a voice??? As you said it was sung in a long running production. Take a look at this video.......It's a one off show and songs were taken from different productions. As an independent performer of those songs, in my opinion....she takes some beating!!!
As I have said ' IN MY OPINION'.
ronjames53 2 years ago
hey there... I dunno much bout all that but you can over train voice
Taniathegoddess 2 years ago
Ok, if you say a voice can be over trained, then I will have to believe you because I am not an expert on the matter. I can only go by what I am hearing and if I was listening to them all on CD or the radio etc, I know who's singing voice I would prefer. If I wanted to watch emotion and acting, I would go and watch a play:) If Lea's voice is evidence of over training, then a lot of singers had better get back in training to try and reach the same stage :)
ronjames53 2 years ago 7
douchehater: I wouldn't go to say that Lea's version is full of artifice.
Felicity1247 1 year ago
All I'm going to say, since there's a huge argument here, is that both Helen and Lea are good in their own ways. Most of it's just a matter of preference, so don't flame someone who likes Lea or vice versa. You might not understand why someone likes this person, but just say, "I don't understand it" and leave it at that. Everyone has the right to their own opinion.
Felicity1247 2 years ago 6
although a lot of singers have sung this song with their beautiful voices this is so far the most soulfull! so expressive! she didn't just sang the song, she became the character in the musical.

there's no emotion in her voice... great voice, but all the emotion is in her physical actions... there's power in her voice, but no pain, no hurt or passion
alexis7263 2 years ago
Close your eyes and listen to her....her voice carries you to the realm of emotion the song depicts...clearly you do ont know a damn thing about music. I'm ot a Broadway snob...but when a voice swells in my chest and carries the orchestration...that is emotion. Miss Lea is emotional in all her preformances even without seeing her actions....she is fantastic.
