I grew up watching the skies, anticipating what day would be our last. I remember this and Berlin. We prayed wanting freedom ourselves. We dreamed of a new world nothing like what it has become. We thought it was an end of so many wars. We thought we would cooperate and lead the world in peace. We dreamed of what the world would be like when there is no longer the need for so much of everyones life to be consumed by the military and what wonderfull new lives we would lead in a world of free law.
there were conflicting stories of who was right. The impression I got at the time was that Gorbechev had initiated open implementation of peristroiky but it was to be a softening of the Iron curtain with redeployment of Soviet politic and a stand down of cold war hostilities fostering trade in a new world economy. I dont think they ever intended for the people to actually stand up for true freedom and demand an open hand policy of government but it happened then bigotries fathered new wars.
Yelzin was a bloody dictator, using a democratic rhetoric as a cover. No wonder that Yelzin was justified by the western media, since he was doing exactly what USA wanted him to do: slaughtherin Russians.

Its a shame Yeltsin died peacefully. He should have been hanged in the center of Red Square.
