@r4h4al He couldn't be selected. He lost his sight on the right eye the year prior which proved too much of a handicap to stay good enough at this level.
@r4h4al yes but shilton learned from his error and went on to be a great keeper. did you know he blamed emlyn hughes for not covering the goalscorer???
I watched it live on TV as well back in 73 and I think it was one of the best soccer games ever ,Suspense and the level wise.England was just unlucky meeting Polish team who was entering a golden era of Polish football.English were a better team that night ,had a fantastic squad but they were just unlucky and met with a goalkeeper who had a game of his life that day. Both teams should qualify to the World Cup of 74 comparing some teams that made it,.Too harsh to get rid of Alf so fast.
In calling England "better" you are forgetting that England lost to Poland 0-2 in Chorzów and all Poland had to do is sit back and counter act. Which they did.
@andre2004 they may not have qualified but they played out of their skins and were sooo unlucky.today there doesnt seem to be any passion in the team. at least this lot were honoured to represent their country.pity such a fine crop of players couldnt have gelled together more as they could have done well in 74 although i think holland/germany would have been too good for them
I can still remember watching this live on TV ( I was 8 at the time). I've always thought of it as being the most incredible match I've ever seen because we seemed to be battering away at them non-stop and the bloody ball just wouldn't go in. Tomasewski was unbelievable, and Brian Clough referred to him as a "clown"!!! I think the whole country went to bed that night completely gutted and in a state of utter disbelief....
This match is the most commemorable match in the history of Polish football, because the best years of Polish football team (70s and 80s) began at 1:1 at Wembley. Polish team finished 3rd in World Cup'74, then 6th in World Cup'78 and then again 3rd in World Cup'82. So actually in October'73England lost to the Polish team that was at the begining of its road to fame and glory. If Poland had lost the game there wouldnt have been the best Polish performance in World Cup ever in 1974.
I felt so sorry for Hunter when I first saw the footage. He and MacFarland had been solid as a rock until that one error. Trying to stand to attention for the anthem must have been the worst torture imaginable for the players. The only reason of which I can think, for it being played at the end is that everyone thought it would be played in triumph. The coldest October night Wembley ever had.
Poland deserved to qualify, but so did England! This was one of the best England teams ever. In the end, I think it was Bobby Moore who was comforting Norman Hunter. If only Bobby was still in his 20-ies...! And Banks; what if he had not lost the sight of one of his eyes? England paid a huge price for missing Banks: once in 1970 agianst Germany, and for all the games of this 1974 W.Cup qualifying group. 1974 W.Cup could also be remembered for those who missed it: Eusebio, Best, Banks, Pele,Tostao
That was great - a nugget of football history right there.
Why did they play the national anthem at the end? Was it protocol to see the Royals leave first? It must have been agony for the English players to have to stand there.
Was a commentator Fritz???

Fans of Coronation Street from this period will be pleased to see Albert Tatlock congratulating the Polish players at 3:00. Very sporting of him.
