I hate the very idea of response videos, I think that is what the text box is for. I like videos where I can disagree by simply saying so in the comment section. If two people genuinely have a problem with each other they should use Skype prvately. The fact that they make videos too and from each other annoys the fuck out of me. Not even finished the video yet but have to highlight a couple of things already.
First up 3:50 was NOT an appeal to ridicule though presenting it as such could be interpreted as a straw man.
Secondly there is no right or wrong way to argue, if you can't look past the person making the argument if you can't focus on the argument rather than the person making the argument you have no business putting yourself forward as some kind of pinnacle of rationality.
The whole "if you yell your irrational" is no different from when people (thesis in particular) hear a swear and then refuse to engage with the argument. Its just a coop out. What is wrong with being angry, passionate about something. Were not all emotionally dead inside!
The idea that atheists should be divided and criticizing each other here is disturbing to me. Thunderf00t went on a quite long BlogTV session with DLandonCole, you can't claim he ignored the guy. The two discussed and disagreed with each other. Compare with Coughlan, who shouted down Pat Condel when Condel tried to clear the air with him.
And note, Condel is a comedian too, he actually works as one, it doesn't protect your views being a comedian because comedy is written and said with a point in mind.
It took me a long time to even subscribe to Coughlan because his approach is so different from mine, but when I finally listened to what he actually was SAYING, I found that I agreed with him more of the time than Tf00t or Condell, especially after they both went off the deep end in my opinion about a year ago.
Maybe he would be more effective if he changed his style, but I don't know. Is it his responsibility to change his style, or is it our responsibility to really listen to the words?
This is on of the main reasons I don't like calling myself an atheist anymore... It's been co-opted into this little (quite large these days actually) cool club of people who think that just adopting the nomenclature "atheist" immediately bestows the title "rational" on them. What I don't understand in this whole saga is why people on either side of this imagined rift can't just disagree with each other. Did you even watch the video? He never said Couglin didn't make valid criticisms. He said his presentation is such that (unless you're a fan) you're not even going to watch him, and certainly aren't going to respond. And as far as responding to other criticism he spent 6 hours in BTV with some shredder guy, and another 6 with Dlandoncole. That's the equivalent time wise of about 100 video responses.
The core problem that those on the left have a problem with TF isn't his lack of response to criticism. It's his unwillingness to think what they think about Islam, and Muslims. TF's opinions are more in line with someone like Christopher Hitchens, or Sam Harris as is evident by the video's he likes, and favorites.

No it's not entirely a left right issue. I'm a leftist who agrees with TF on Islam. Who they? TF never suggested that anyone's constitutional rights be taken away. He said specifically that they had the right, and should have the right, but he found it tasteless as do I. thunderf00ts has not done his research and ignored very important parts of the sources he's used for his own video's, then when called out on it has NOT responded to correct his mistakes and has ignored the valid crits he's been given. all the while he's left an extremely misleading video on his page. thats why he's angry.
Angry is one thing. Coughlan in these clips appears insane. Which is fine if that's what his subs like. Angrybob, or whatever his name is is popular, but Coughlan appears to expect TF to respond to him. If someone spoke to me that way I'd tell him to fuck off, and tell my friends I was accosted by a nut. TF spent 6 hours in BTV with DlandonCole, so to say he doesn't respond to criticism (when presented respectfully) is ridiculous.
Also given the fact that TF has 100,000+ people viewing each of his video's, makes it impossible to respond to every criticism, and is something his fans (90% of whom have no problem with him) wouldn't tolerate. As it is every video he's made responding in any way is peppered with comments like "stop wasting your time with the critics". He has more of an obligation to his fans than his critics.
See the problem with this video is that Coughlin is just a very over the top which is mainly due to frustration at the way he's received.
He's incredibly quote mined between his parody or comedy video's and his serious video's where because of the way people quote mine him they make it look like it's one and the same.
On your last comment : of course, not all atheists act that way. But that's the point! Not all ****** act that way, for every group... The point is that we should direct our criticism at other atheists too, as you JUST DID. This will cause occasional division, and hence the conclusion of your video is not consistent with your own attitude. I mean I can see the point of the rest of your video, but your conclusion that atheists should not be divided doesn't seem to follow to me.
It's not as if Coughlan immediately responds so vehemently whenever he disagrees with someone. That only comes after he's been ignored and the problem persists, or if he's freaking accused of having a mental disorder by someone who's basically mirroring actual troll videos, which is what Thunderf00t did. His apparent bigotry wasn't as bad as his treatment of Coughlan.
Okay, final comment. I do agree that Coughlan's approach isn't very helpful for inviting discussion. If I were in Thunderf00t's position, I would avoid Coughlan as well. But, Thunderf00t does have criticism he should address. People get a sense that he's somewhat of a bigot for appearing to attack Muslim people rather than Islam. It sounds rather like hate speech at times. I think your video does come off as a "hate Coughlan video". Just going to invite more drama.
There is so little common ground among atheists, except the non belief, that any attempt to create any kind of community will always end in these kinds of pissing contests. How about giving each other some respect over expressing their points? After all they have the right to speak out.
It's really easy to go around bashing religion. Any idiot can do it. No one, however, seems to offer any realistic solutions to the real problem of extremists religious ideologies. If anyone thinks drawing Mohammed or burning Korans is a solution, they're complete idiots. There's no gainful discussion or debate anymore. It's all just about pleasing people who are already Atheists.

I hate the very idea of response videos, I think that is what the text box is for. I like videos where I can disagree by simply saying so in the comment section. If two people genuinely have a problem with each other they should use Skype prvately. The fact that they make videos too and from each other annoys the fuck out of me. Not even finished the video yet but have to highlight a couple of things already.
First up 3:50 was NOT an appeal to ridicule though presenting it as such could be interpreted as a straw man.
Secondly there is no right or wrong way to argue, if you can't look past the person making the argument if you can't focus on the argument rather than the person making the argument you have no business putting yourself forward as some kind of pinnacle of rationality.

I like the fact that other atheists aren't afraid to tell me when they disagree- and based on the last line of this video, I think you do too- or was that line only intended for theists who disagree with you? All very valid points, except the opinion at the end (but that's just me - I don't see myself as being on any "side" in this whole thing). In fairness to coughlan he's mostly acting out when he's calling bullshit on someone and it's usually done in an OTT manner cause that's his shtick. And I have to stand with him on calling out the unintentional racism that some channels have fallen into.
And that said, when he does make points he tends to back them up with references.

I think coughlin is hilarious and enjoyed TF's OLDER vids, but I don't find anything wrong with how Coughlin does business. It's really no different than TF and a number of other atheists treat religious people.

Thunderf00t went on a quite long BlogTV session with DLandonCole, you can't claim he ignored the guy. The two discussed and disagreed with each other. Compare with Coughlan, who shouted down Pat Condel when Condel tried to clear the air with him.
And note, Condel is a comedian too, he actually works as one, it doesn't protect your views being a comedian because comedy is written and said with a point in mind.

It took me a long time to even subscribe to Coughlan because his approach is so different from mine, but when I finally listened to what he actually was SAYING, I found that I agreed with him more of the time than Tf00t or Condell, especially after they both went off the deep end in my opinion about a year ago.
Maybe he would be more effective if he changed his style, but I don't know. Is it his responsibility to change his style, or is it our responsibility to really listen to the words?

This is on of the main reasons I don't like calling myself an atheist anymore... It's been co-opted into this little (quite large these days actually) cool club of people who think that just adopting the nomenclature "atheist" immediately bestows the title "rational" on them. I've met many christians who are more rational and intelligent than this guy, I'm definitely not saying that makes christianity more rational, it just means that the reason people are religious are a lot more complex.

I agree with some of your criticisms of Coughlan. I am a fan of his, but he can be quite obsessive and persistent, but I don't raise this in comments because he can overreact to dissent. Having said that, you couldn't be more wrong when you say that "atheists shouldn't be divided". Atheists simply don't believe in God. To presume that a common political or philosophical approach follows from that alone is ludicrous, so there will naturally be disagreements in these areas.

He said his presentation is such that (unless you're a fan) you're not even going to watch him, and certainly aren't going to respond. And as far as responding to other criticism he spent 6 hours in BTV with some shredder guy, and another 6 with Dlandoncole. That's the equivalent time wise of about 100 video responses.

The core problem that those on the left have a problem with TF isn't his lack of response to criticism. It's his unwillingness to think what they think about Islam, and Muslims. TF's opinions are more in line with someone like Christopher Hitchens, or Sam Harris as is evident by the video's he likes, and favorites.

Also given the fact that TF has 100,000+ people viewing each of his video's, makes it impossible to respond to every criticism, and is something his fans (90% of whom have no problem with him) wouldn't tolerate. That only comes after he's been ignored and the problem persists, or if he's freaking accused of having a mental disorder by someone who's basically mirroring actual troll videos, which is what Thunderf00t did. Okay, final comment. I do agree that Coughlan's approach isn't very helpful for inviting discussion. If I were in Thunderf00t's position, I would avoid Coughlan as well. But, Thunderf00t does have criticism he should address. People get a sense that he's somewhat of a bigot for appearing to attack Muslim people rather than Islam. It sounds rather like hate speech at times. I think your video does come off as a "hate Coughlan video". Just going to invite more drama.
