  • Great stuff!!!

  • i did song comparisons since way back about two years ago i reposted youtube songs on my facebook and one series included mixture a (probably the doors..the end) and riki dont lose that number by steely dan mixture b. im unsure what the other mix "buttons" were. ok, im done posting. threes in a row is too many for the magnified psyche of youtubers trapped in this flux.

  • all you zappa fanatics remind me of my friend's roommates. staying serious to the point that its almost self mockery. your precision is unapproachable to be argued by outsiders such as myself. I'll leave it at that. ok, continue.

  • Moraisito Ametista - The best...

  • "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" at 2:15!

  • @timkelly nice spot, he would often quote it on the '74 tour too!

  • @timkelly when the music is over- the doors

  • On which album you could find this version ?

  • @toupietournedonc None unless its on a bootleg

  • Zappa was a genius... so I guess he was a composer, a jam legend, and several other titles.

Geniuses are few and far between,

and he was one of them.

  • It's strange to me how Zappa isn't recognized more as a jam legend, and less as the wacky composer.

  • theseanze: "It's strange to me how Zappa isn't recognized more as a jam legend...."

Probably because he was never a "jam legend". Jammers just noodle around and hope something happens. The "infinite number of monkeys on an infinite number of typewriters" theory. Frank wrote with sure intent and genius, much like a brilliant author writes a great novel. You don't get that accidentally. The difference between a great composer and a "jammer". Listen to "Joe's Garage" for Frank's take on that.

  • Who do you think of under the label "jam bands"? You're assuming what it's about. There are plenty of crappy ones out there, but that's no insult to Frank. Everyone in his band says he never played the same solo twice. His later material especially has that progressive-jam wandering sound.

I absolutely love his compositions, but Phish does the same thing and developed their style with a lot of influence from him. Grateful Dead also had long compositions that they would interpret on stage.

  • @theseanze There are numerous videos on the internet to support my assertion, showing Frank conducting and the band members reading off charts, the occasional "random improvisation" notwithstanding. Correct, Phish and the Grateful Dead are "jam bands". Zappa was, in his own words, "a composer".

  • @graciehunterII -- Zappa also talked about the fact that a perfect performance is impossible in a real-life situation, which is where the open-ness to improvisation comes in, but if I offended you by associating him with musicians who don't consider themselves strictly composers, then I guess I'm sorry. Regardless, he is more appreciated among rock/jam musicians than the average music student (studying classical/jazz compositions, notation, etc...) in my experience.

  • @graciehunterII Very true

  • @theseanze Americas are stupid thats why.

  • @theseanze hmmmm...seen him twice & been listening to him for over 30 years & heard him described as 'genius','awesome','fantastic',& even 'really good'....but NEVER as 'the wacky composer'.Where are you getting your info?

  • @toobularbells -- I don't get my opinions of music from magazine articles or journals if that's what you mean. I miss where I called him "the wacky composer" but Zappa went along with the underground image society naturally placed on someone so ahead of his time in musical and political astuteness. But he certainly had an improvisational attitude toward his body of work, yet inter-genre control of a dynamic band and so I think he does push the boundaries for an abstract category like "jam"

  • @theseanze read your last post to find 'wacky'.

    During this song,Frank sez,"Hey lets jam...",& I've noticed a theme arising here(postings) on that subject.IMO it's a tongue-in-cheek comment made by him.

  • @theseanze Actually, this is NOT the version with the 'hey lets jam' line.Frank was STRICT and STRUCTURED.What sounds like 'jammin' is choreographed. Its his eclectic & eccentric style. The guy plays like he has 6 fingers on each hand ffs.

  • @toobularbells -- I don't know what you're talking about with his mocking line, if you could send me a link...

But the point isn't labels, which is what offends other Zappa fans when I bring it up, the point is that people in his band say he never played the same solo twice. What's the difference between composing and improvising? One you do in a den at home and one you do on the spot, only some ideas are composed on the spot so why insult improvisational genius by saying it has to be planned

  • Incredible, again and again guitar solos as if nothing simpler than the.

So much new from him. Thanks to YouTube for this option,

    and timmo1782

  • @GannoF ....

I know, its amazing. The guy rips one awesome solo after another like its nothing.

  • Superb! ;) As normally

  • doors parody, dig it?

  • Frank's solo on the album version of this song is one of my faves.

  • @rorshakks Mine too but i say that about all of them

  • Thanks for the awesome vids timmo.

  • man you got some great stuff on here, where you find this shit.
