thank you wpru and smokeytc... intervals are the spaces between the notes. I couldn't even listen beyond this. Please don't misteach, especially under the name of "expert".
@TwistedWithin hand signs are mainly used in elementary schools. Kodaly uses hand signs frequently. Orff does use hand signs, but not as often. Outside of that, I have never seen junior high or higher use hand signs.
I wish I had learned this, I think it must help with sight singing.
Maybe not the hand movement, but the ability to know intervals. My singing teachers never did anything like this with me, they just taught me songs, which is ok but now I wish I was a bit better at music in general
how can i stop going so high on the last do? becaus no matter how many times i try i always go too high on the last do and it sounds horrid, could some1 pz help me?
i hate solfege. i hate how it changes on different keys. key of g key of c key of a flat ughhhh i hate ittttt :/ but thanks anywayy cause my techer makes us learn it
In my class we use solfege to sing difficult parts of music, and to also hear the tone of the music, I HATE SOLFEGE but it works sometimes when you have a large group of people singing to get everyone on pitch
@xEternalx Solfege is used to train singers to sing from reading music. If you play an instrument and u see the note, you can physically play the note, even if u have no idea how it will sound. When u learn solfege (of which this is lesson 1 of 100) the exercises will get progressively harder. You wouldn't just sing a scale. You would be asked to sing sequences, skips, intervals, chords all from looking at the sheet music and you have to come up with the correct note from tonal memory. :-O
@mkewl209 hope ur one of the shittiest student ever.... go get some more lessons on music theory.. an interval is always a created from 2DIFFERENT NOTES not a single note u Bitch-ASS..thats jus a note..might b ur teacher iz a shit...u sound total wirdo u looser...dont try to be over smart on what u dont know...... Wpru is totally right!!..M a music teacher BTW...u punk-ass.
@wpru a scale is composed by a series of intervals. Do re mi fa sol la ti/si do are the name of the intervals which you can move from a key to another and are the intervals from the ionian mode. If you want to play as an exemple B minor you make the hand signs in the order of la ti do re mi fa sol laaaa and you begin with the la on not B in which octave you want.
@unclesamfatg You are almost right, but not. "Do" is a syllable for a single note--a single note is not an interval. An interval consists of two different pitches. And yes, the major scale can also be called the Ionian mode, but who actually calls it that these days??
I believe the reason for the hand signals is to give you an idea of how the sound would look....so like when you imagin a hand signal then way the sound is supposed to be is a bit more clearer...or w/e. I mean at least it does that to me, because it seems to give each individual sound a personality...
you have a beutiful voice!Thank you so much for putting this on here im in vocal in school and i have to memorize that lol and i had forgotten what La was
To be honest, I really like your vocal techniques. Just curious about your marital status. yeah, I'm serious. I'm a male music teacher that really need a female trainer for my choir, especially the females. Luv ya.
em...i'm honestly not trying to be rude, but what the point behind in doing the hand signs? does that help anything? maybe it's pretty obvious and i can't notice because i just woke up? lol
It makes you learn and sight read/sing better as you associate the change in positions with intervals.
And if you notice hand signs for semitones (fa and ti), they both point either up or down. Most people sing ti flat, and because the hand sign points upwards, it helps people sing it sharper. Likewise, most people sing fa too sharp, and the pointing down of the hand sign helps people sing it a bit flatter.
Also, it is kinesthetic and visual learning. Helps you learn faster.
This is excellent except for referring to "do" as an "interval". You don't have an interval until you have 2 notes. The interval is the space between 2 notes.
Si, as far as I have always known is the 5th note of the ascending chromatic scale (between la and sol). I've heard it used to be used instead of ti, but centuries ago. As far as I am aware that is universal. xxx
@licklestarlet It's not useful to u because u don't sight read and sing a totally unknown song off the score. Someone plays it (or CD) and u memorize the tune. In the unlikely event u were on a deserted island w/ no instrument and only sheet music, Solfege training would enable u to sing the songs correctly. Realtively, cause u would have no reference as to the song key - unless u had perfect pitch. That's why a capella choir conductors blow a pitch pipe, to give em the reference pitch. :-)
yeah thats well in spanish it the same, the notes are c d e f g a b. but when talking about singing your replace si or "b" with ti. a little weird i dont know why they do it but thats how it is. its called solfege like she said.
@kevingp12 It used to be Si in the beginning. Then in 19th century they named the in between pitches with an "I"...Di, Ri, Fi Si Li. So, to avoid conflict with Si between Sol and La...Ti was adopted.
PLEASE!!! Mae some research before posting your opinion and misguide people... How you read notes depends on where you learn to read them. In England for example they use DO RE MI FA SO LA TI DO, in Italy, France, Greece DO RE MI FA SOL LA SI DO is used. Both are right...
In fact, it doesn't matter how you pronounce them, they are going to sound the same if you sing them. :p
this is great erica....you should put one out for the minor mode and all chromatic approach tones for any given scale.... Raised 1Di Lowered 2Ra Raised 2Ri Lowered 3Me (or Ma) Raised 4Fi Lowered 5Se Raised 5Si Lowered 6Le (or Lo) Raised 6Li Lowered 7Te (or Ta)
thx.. i really like it in fact i love it...it really helps..anyway i would like it if you can upload a video to train a child of kids voice.. i would really appreciate it if you would...thx!
It would be nice if you could teach how to sing in fixed do, as opposed to movable do. The college I go to (University of Oregon) uses movable do, but I would like to learn fixed do for better ear training.
oh geez I wish I knew what the hell you were talking about (sincerely). All of this is so interesting & I love singing ( in my bedroom heheh), but I'm so ignorant when it comes to an understanding of these things.....time for lessons I guess
Fixed Do means that C is always Do, and that all the letter names always stay with the same syllable. Movable Do means that Do is whatever note is the basic note of the key (called the "tonic"). Movable Do is only usable in what's called "tonal music", which is music that is in relation to a certain key. If it's "atonal", then you have some different types of music theory than the traditionally taught in common practice
Maybe a little bit of music theory in college (or you can self-teach yourself a little bit). It's not as complicated as it sounds. It's hard for me to explain in a quick message though - it's easier to understand if somebody explains it in person. Wikipedia might be useful too. Just Google search "fixed-do" and "movable-do" solfege.

and not: DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI
sounds like you would pronounce "TI"...
but your really talented! i wish you could teach me so you could tell me exactly what i make wrong.
WhiteSayuri 3 years ago
it is TI - think of "The Sound of Music".
Do - a deer, a female deer
Re - a drop of golden sun
Mi - a name I call myself
Fa - a long long way to run
So - a needle pulling thread
La - a note to follow So
Ti - I drink with jam and bread
and that brings us back to Do...
