Yeah well, we were pretty good for a year keeping the winch handle in the bag I made. Until the bag rotted out and I got sick of trying to find the GD winch handle at 4 in the morning. Eventually we just left the handle in the winch. It corroded in, never to be removed- or lost- again. Do what works. Don't give a damn what others think...:)
