I honestly dont know the difference between hardcore and metalcore. but typicly metalcore is more brutal then say thrash metal. does that mean it all is? no. its a way to help direct you to similar music. that way you can say you listen to a similar sound instead of naming of bands some people have never heard before. so in short, calm your self :)

Metalcore also typically seems to be faster than "normal" metal. its kinda a combination of hardcore punk and metal, i think. and i agree with what @jebigaMS said about the vocals too
