Is the Legion any better than the Parachute division or the French Marines? I am sure in a regular French infantry unit, language is not the barrier it in fact is in the Legion. I doubt the French Paras have the desertion the 2emeREP does. I am an American but think most people need to forget about WW2 early on. The Free French fought well. A well led French soldier is a good soldier, then again 1/3 of the Legion are native French (not Begian, Swiss or Canadian).

I wonder about the British who were interviewed here. Many British in the 1980s went to the FFL after the downsizing of the British military. If they were in The Paras, Royal Marines or even Infantry they brought some valuable training with them. I wonder if Lawson was a Para prior?

Is the Legion any better than the Parachute division or the French Marines? I am sure in a regular French infantry unit, language is not the barrier it in fact is in the Legion. I doubt the French Paras have the desertion the 2emeREP does. I am an American but think most people need to forget about WW2 early on. The Free French fought well. A well led French soldier is a good soldier, then again 1/3 of the Legion are native French (not Begian, Swiss or Canadian).

NB: I am NOT saying the FFL isn't a professional, modern, well trained force. I just don't think we should pretend it is something it isn't.

@funkeemon At Dien Bien Phu the French forces were vastly outnumbered and they were in a valley. They were surrounded by mountains on all sides. The French did not expect the Viet Minh to have heavy artillery, but they did. The odds were completely against the French. It's incredible they lasted as long as they did. This has nothing to do with whether the French harrassed your people or not. In war harassment is the last thing I would worry about. Death would be more concerning.
