@C1owie you don't have to like soundgarden, in fact no one cares that you hate them, but if you really can't tell and acknowledge that some massively talented people wrote and recorded this song you have no right to comment on any art of any kind at any time, good, bad or otherwise...Coldplay would slap you about like a disobedient child for putting down this band, I gaurantee you that
Shower in the dark day Clean sparks diving down Cool in the waterway Where the baptized drown Naked in the cold sun Breathing life like fire Thought I was the only one But that was just a lie [Chorus] Cause I heard it in the wind And I saw it in the sky And I thought it was the end And I thought it was the 4th of July Pale in the flare light The scared light cracks and disappears And leads the scorched ones here And everywhere no one cares
@HexagramMan The fire is spreading And no one wants to speak about it Down in the hole Jesus tries to crack a smile Beneath another shovel load [Chorus] Now I'm in control Now I'm in the fall out Once asleep but now I stand And I still remember Your sweet everything Light a roman candle And hold it in your hand
Saw this song live at the forum (wanted to cry tears of joy because it was so awesome of them to play such an underrated song and its probably my favorite) but Chris said it was about a bad acid trip involving the cops haha. Im guessing the cops flashing lights represent the fireworks. But chris has always been big on allowing the listener to interpret his lyrics instead of just telling us so, interpret away !
drugs/acid are an influence ,the 70s are an influence, but there is more to this song and its harmonics then that/this is one of greatest groups ever during their prime, don't underestimate the power of music to reach the soul and to teach the mind about surpassing the limits of what you conceive reality to be.this song is powerful
@xZeppelin420 Why not today ? be yourself. Amazing song it reminds me of Led Zep with the guitars, vocals, and drums. Actually it reminds me of Kashmire.
@1rammstein21 It's about Chris Cornell and his friends dropping acid, going through a forest and seeing fireworks all around and tripping major balls. The date that they did this was (obviously) the 4th of July.
superunknown is the superunknown metal grind/core album of all time. tons of shows, seem 'em all, from my 1st, KISS '76 @ the Spectrum, to both woodstocks, metallica/pantera/chili/nirvana/fla/skinny puppy.242/and 40 something DMb shows, a broad horizon, but , it all comes back to thayil and cornell,... soundgarden, hands down , the best...
Some people may not call this metal, but it kind of has a grindcore feel to it that introduced me to the metal scene just as I hit my teens, and I never looked back. For this, Superunknown is one of my top five greatest albums of all time.
Oh, and please God, make their 2012 reunion worth the wait. I hope Cornell rediscovers his origins and starts rockin' hard again to bring some spirit back to Seattle!
A year ago I was in Italy. I was sitting in my hotelroom 'cause it was so hot outside. All I did was reading a book called Song of Kali, while I listened to this song over and over. It was like I was in a dream.. Love on Soundgarden for making this song!
This song is definitely NOT about nuclear war, that's the "surface" interpretation. Look past that. Look into the words, it's a puzzle, a prophecy for things to come (at the time it was written)...think, 2001.
Where has good music gone? I really wish I was around before the 90's so I could have grown up with this stuff. Music nowadays shouldn't even be classified as such.
I was about to disagree, when I looked outside and realized it's raining. And I haven't listened to this song in a few years. So now I agree, and this song is still as badass as it was when I first heard it.

Fuck speed metal, I LOVE when it just sounds so fucking sludgy, and heavy. As if it's an aural representation of mud. And I mean this in the best way possible. Sludge metal rules.
@pivot1022 If you haven't heard an album of a certain genre I really don't see how you can judge it. To really judge a genre correctly you need to listen to a few albums of that genre.
@pivot1022 Your statement doesn't make any sense. I assume you meant to use the word, "than".
Also, some people can be used are counterexamples to your statement. I enjoy death metal songs and albums. There are many people that do as well. Don't judge a genre if you haven't even heard one album in that genre. You should at least hear a few essential albums in a genre before you judge it.
@CitizenOfEuphoria I'd agree on that but death metal is usually so instrumentally demanding and in most cases genius, I really can't agree with you. I listen to way too many amazing death metal bands, yet I still enjoy this. Why do we need to argue if we all like the same song?
Death metal has one good band: Death. It was one of the first and their frontman is considered the godfather of death metal. I really recommend trying to listen to it, it might sound harsh at first but it's very melodic and the songwriter/frontman: Chuck Schuldiner (RIP) is a musical mastermind. They also have had amazing drummers (Gene Hoglan, the atomic clock) and one of the best bass players in the world: Steve DiGiorgio. They also made some very good instrumentals.
death metal is a bunch of untalented penis-breaths that convince people that they are playing very well because they are inaudible.
the only death metal that i can even listen to is dethklok. THEY know what they are doing.
my best friends brother is balls deep into death metal. I prefer progressive rock/metal. he and i are both drummers. which of us do you think can do more intrecite beats/fills? Me, baby!
@gaybutte There are a few good death metal bands, I'm not a death metal person, I'm more of a progressive and alternative type person, Death mixes Progressive Metal and Death Metal, they don't scream about killing people(Early albums, yeah they do), they actually have a point, a lot of their songs deal with the Human Mind, and thinking for yourself, another good one is Sepultura, I like to call them the world's metal band, because they mix elements from Brazil(where they're from), in the music.
@dissident93 i never try to leave suggestions for other people to listen to, but if you like sludge metal, if you havent already, you MUST listen to acid bath's "bleed me an ocean". they're not together anymore, but is exactly what you're describing. hope you like it!!
@jCantrell03 It's about being on an LSD trip. The 4th of July and end of the world lyrics are in reference to the colours you see, which resemble fireworks/fire.
I'm going to see these guys in Fairfax, VA on Tuesday. I can't wait to see my favorite band of all time. This band is amazing and not only that but it doesn't get the credit it deserves. Still... What a fun show it will be. I don't care that I'm traveling for days to see them.
@Meladolus dude i just seen them tonight and let me tell you...ive seen black sabbath and soundgarden topped every single show ive ever seen....it was fucking awesome...all those miles are gonna be worth it my friend

Whenever I hear this song, it eerily reminds me of 9/11. Of course, I know this was written way before 2001, but does anyone else agree?
The lyrics are very haunting-good song.

@k9masterr I was 1001. Let's find the 1000th vote and kill him and then we can have a duel about who's going to take his place!

I'm going to see these guys in Fairfax, VA on Tuesday. I can't wait to see my favorite band of all time. This band is amazing and not only that but it doesn't get the credit it deserves. Still... What a fun show it will be. I don't care that I'm traveling for days to see them.
