does the last minute have to be sooo extremly aggressive in your chest voice.. I little lighter sound would be better for sound quality of your voice and pronounciation. In the beginning it`s well done!
I feel like I am posting again after seeing this! I saw this amazing musical original cast. It was my first show in NYC. It is the most riveting in my memory. The way she held the last note was so amazing and then she took this gasp for air. She was so committed and all we could do was stare with our mouths gaping open'.
her performance is NOT in any way emotionless. She was DIRECTED to sit very still and relate the song very clearly and directly...It's a performance that, in its simplicity, could work on stage or film. They were going for realism and not theatricality is all.
I saw "Tick Tick Boom!" with Molly Ringwald and I thought Molly did a good job singing this song, but when I listened to Amy Spanger on the OST CD, I was blown away! She is awesome!
Personally, I think that Amy does a spectacular job. Also, it needs to be said that Karessa (whom she is portraying when singing this number) is not exactly meryl streep. It's implied that she is more pretty than talented and Amy MAY have made a choice as an actor to reflect that. Or she may be giving us the performance we might have seen IN SUPERBIA. I've never seen it, but it's a possibility. Mad props to Amy - she paved the way. The rest are just variations on HER work.
correct me if anyone knows better, but having seen the original workshop recording of superbia, this song was in that performance. Though I know it states in the script of Tick Tick Boom that this was a song from that show, it was probably just added in by the script writers after Jonathan's death. btw, superbia is one F'ed up show... really far out there
Tick.. Tick.. BOOM! Goes about a songwriter. Johnny, he wrote a show, SuperBia. And in the musical, this song takes place in the theatre where there is a workshop of Superbia. Amy sings this as Karessa, not as Susan.
You're so lucky you got to see Superbia in it's workshops! That must have been absoutly amazing to get to witness! What was so weird about it?? I really wish someone would find the script and put it on :-)
...this is from Tick Tick Boom... The origional Off Broadway Production :p Even Though JL did write a show called superbia, I dont think it ever made it to YouTube...sadly...
@davespy81 Well not that much... in the CD of Larson Sings Larson there's the song "One of These Days"... it was supposed to be the intro song for Superbia... and we can hear it in Jon's voice...
This song, actually, was used in "tick, tick...BOOM!" It was originally from a play that was never produced called "Superbia." It was made by Jonathan Larson, but it was never produced because it was too strange for a play.
Whew are you kidding? Emotionless? Kelly did an ok job with it, but not at the level as Amy, and no where near better. Truly. Listen to Amy's voice. Amy is pitch perfect and quite powerful and FULL of emotion in this performance. There is no way to do this song without it. Especially to hit the notes and maintain them with full support. That is the difference from trying and succeeding. Amy did the later here. This is a rehearsed, relaxed, and an accomplished performance.
We're going to have to agree to disagree here. I'm well versed in the mechanics of singing. I hear your point and see how it is reflected in Spangler's performance. My problem stems from your final point, she is too rehearsed and relaxed. The result is a flat, passionless (though technically correct)performance. I'd rather be in Kelly's audience enjoying an honest and deeper interpretation.
I don't think it's fair to say that Amy's emotionless.I mean you can't see her for the most dramatic parts of the song, the bridge and the last verse. You can see her a little in the beginning when it'd be silly to start really emotional, obviously, and the very end where,I'd imagine, the actor would want to be "putting on a strong front" as the character,or something to that effect. The rest of the time her face is out of focus or white from the spot.I love Spanger<3,cept for her vibrato sometimes.
this is such a beautiful song!!! i think she could've done a little more for the high belts, but other than that she completely sold it acting wize. she's incredible- i love it.
I saw this show so many times off broadway and every single time she sang this, I had tears. It was just perfect. (Plus, Raul is adorable as Jonathan in it! The way he and Jerry Dixon look at each other is great.) When she sings, "Not only one sense, but use all five," I still cry just watching this. Yeah, she is wonderful.
shes my favorite performer ever. seeing her live is a religious expirence. not to mention, shes the sweetest person alive, and so gracious. and SOOOOOOO talented.
haha i know she lives the down the street from me she grew up in my town Newbury and went to the same school and had the same acting coaches and yah shes really great, and also very talented
she is so obnoxious

But WHAT is the staging of this song??? Random and boring... shame on director.
But Spanger is brilliant.

this song always gets me. This is my fav song of the show. Just like with RENT, u could feel Jonathon's pain and anger and heart in all these songs.
TomCollinsgirl 2 years ago
I feel like Jonathan Larson had a unique talent to really put emotion to music...RENT for me is like a new emotional depth all of its own.
And this mucical was really all Jon...the music, the lyrics, and the script. Just trancendant!

What did you use for the cut? I need 16 bars and I can't seem to find a good cut for this particular song but I'd LOVE to use it!
samerz816 2 years ago
The last 16 bars of it is good, just act it really well because there aren't much words.
The last 16 where it starts "come to your senses"

@quinnams I'm guessing it's less used as an audition song because it's difficult for most women to belt that high and long, especially at the end.
