@fortiesnutcase This was 1939?? Are you sure it's not the 60s?? It's extremely rare to see home movies from the 30s in colour!! And yeah things were definetely simpler back then. When kids had real presents instead of cellphones, iphones, mini computers etc. We got Give A Show and Viewmaster (remember those? Brilliant things!) records, clothes, books, wooden toys and that's all we needed really. Kids are given what they don't need. I also remember getting tamagotchis for my niece in the 90s :)
@boffinme80 Yep, that was definitely 1939 footage as far as I could tell. I used to have a bunch of those films documenting that family's progression through the years and that was the earliest one. Thank you for your comments and for watching this video.
@boffinme80 This is definitely late thirties. Look at the girls' dresses, their hairstyles, the fact that the baby is wearing rompers, the Charlie McCarthy doll, and the style of the title cards. Color film for home movies was the big noise in those days and Kodak was promoting the daylights out of it.
@kazzyjbeanz I'm not sure who the baby is. A buddy of mine got the movies at an estate sale years ago and there used to be a bunch of them showing the aging of the family. Thanks so much for watching!
You are very welcome. Time sure does pass by quick. I was thinking the very same thing about how old that little girl is now. Thanks so much for commenting on and watching this video!
I think you are right. They must have been pretty rich to afford that 16mm movie equipment back then. I think the woman sitting on the floor looking after the little boy is the baby's mother judging from the other films I had from the same estate. Thanks so much for commenting on and watching this video!
Wow, amazing. This is what Christmas was like in 1939. That little girl is in her 70's now. Time goes by quick, huh. Thank you for sharing this piece of history.
wow, that looks so modern for 1939; i would have guessed early 50s. i didn't know color super 8 film was made in the 30s, or 8mm cameras for that matter...
To do titles you used to be able to buy a box of little plastic letters. Just spell out what you want on a piece of cardboard, then film it for a few seconds.
That's a good question! I'm not sure how they did that. They must have had the titles professionally made up, I think. I don't know if the camera itself had that capability. Thanks so much for watching this video!
The title looks to me like a spliced in section of footage showing what we used to call a "title card." Basically the same idea that they used back in the old silent films.
Thanks for sharing, this is fascinating & delightful, amazing the baby is now 70, I also have home movies on Super8 from 60's but not sure how to go aboutgetting them uploaded to youtube,
Thanks so much for your comments! As for uploading, instead of converting the files I just do it the simple way by playing the movie back on my computer from a dvd I had transferred it to on and then filming the computer screen. It seems to work pretty well. Hope this helps. I know, it is amazing that baby is now 70. Thanks again!
It's amazing how different the living standard between the US and the rest of the world at this time was. My grandma told me that they haven't electricity before the end of the fifties here in germany. It's amazing that many americans have cars before ww2 started at this time my grandma lives together with pigs, which they ate.
I know sound home movie films from the thirties show up from time to time on ebay so I suppose something will show up on youtube if they are not already. Old home movies are great especially if they are in color and especially sound. It really captures this bygone era. Thanks for commenting on and watching this video. Much appreciated. I will try to let you know if I run across some sound ones posted on here. Thanks again!
I know. It is so hard to believe that little toddler is 70 now. I say the same thing in my vintage slides video from the same era. Thanks so much for watching this video. Much appreciated!
You're right. It sure was a long time ago. I have a home movie of my dad from that year also and I have the exact same kind of thought when I view it. I have a short post of the film on youtube also and will be putting a longer segment from it on sometime soon. Thank you for commenting on and watching this video. Much appreciated!
I fully agree. I thoroughly enjoy watching old home movies - the older the better! So glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for commenting on and watching this video. Very much appreciated!
Yep, that would have been great if it had sound. They made some home movies with sound back in the thirties and I will definitely post them as I get access to them. Thank you for your comments and thanks for watching!
Sorry about that. What I meant to say is that I have seen sound home movies for sale in the past from the 1930s and when I find them or can borrow some at some point I will definitely post them on here. Thanks so much for watching!

@mrsjennyjonas39 I believe the depression-era lasted from 1929-1937 so this would be just a couple years after it ended. Thanks for watching!
