I would have to say that I like this version as well as Jug Champions version. This one represents something I never thought existed before: jazz-folk fusion, though this may be too narrow a category. Great song, how they could perform it without laughing is anybody's guess, as it is quite humorous in its own way.
oconnell128 - I bet you were a sr in 79 or 80 - this song was everywhere summer of 79. This one and Don't Ease Me In.....good days! I love this acustic period after Donna was kicked out of the band....Jerry's favorite GFD music to play and it was easy to see!
@TheZmann16 ….assuming you mean the "original" if you know who did the tune, otherwise it is called "traditional". Its nice to refer to a musician using an actual name rather than a racial slur. Your sentence is rather amusing. Giving props to the "nigger version" for being better, then politely stating no disregard to the GD when none was shown. I realize that u might be a "nigger" (of any race), apologies if so. A racist dead head is not one, no disregard to you.
@nichmars nice! ty, didnt realize anyone actually knew about the Memphis Jug Band….so many GD tunes reference M.J.B. originals. And I agree, it is better. Still, what's with the "nigger" trip?
I remember watching this show... Tom Snyder was caught completely off guard, as he said after the break, he was expecting big loud rock n roll band, and the dead came out accustic. He loved it!
I never knew they promoted the reckoning thing. I thought it was just a compilation of some accoutstic first sets or something. COOLNESS!! THIS IS WHY YoUtUbE is awesome

LOL I thought rounder was some awesome hilarious slang for fat girls - don't they mention fat girls in one of the first verses or two?
PinkFloydrulez 2 months ago
The "n-word" version would be by the Memphis Jug Band. The Dead replaced the "n-word" with the word "rounder"... I LOVE both versions!

@johnee77 I thought it was ok to say the n-word in 1981

Rounder refers to a man that makes the rounds of the bars, the flop houses then jail. nothing racial there folks

Reckoning - one of the most beautiful albums of acoustic music. It's a history of great American musical influences.
