@paulklee Corky is the man, he is one great player...but, I love your comment. If I were explaining 'this much soul' about Butter I wouldn't be able to spread my arms wide enough.... Thanks for watching, we hope to add to all this soon....
Hello and thank you for making the effort to get Paul Butterfield more widely appreciated. I was lucky enough to be in my high school years from 68 to 70 and I worked the horn section LPs so deep into my brain that I can almost hear every note in my head. There's a great deal of great music left us by many artists, but Paul is a giant in my book.
I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said that hearing Paul Butterfield and Band's first record in the fall of 1965 changed my life. For years, I've literally havd a recurring dream where forgotten audio tapes, or film footage of Butterfield turns up and is made public. This production by PBFS promises to shed some light on this brilliant singer and harp player-and very cool guy. How great it is to see Sam Lay and others who were associated with "Butter"!
This fucking WMG bullshit has got to go. God Damn Leach lawyers and money grubbers ruining the music world over nothing. The idiots are screwing themselves out of free promotion that would get them more sales on tunes and artists who have been dead and forgotten for the most part if it were not for folks on here who love it.
You have got to be kidding! WMG is evil. And WMG (Warner Music Group) is destroying its own image. You Tubers will not soon forget all this nonsense (it's all about money.) To deprive the public of something like this should be criminal.
there is no audio sound?? who has the shit to do that? someone needs to have the feeling of control? I ask nicely...can we all get to hear a bit of music history again....
DITTO, until we work this out with WMG I'm going to leave this up. We have an agreement from them that we are allowed to use the sound. So, we hope this will be soon. I'd rather have a portal for Butterfield fans than nothing at all.
We'll keep you posted, the documentary production moves forward, and we have some great things going on this spring.
hey Mr. or Miss 'bug', if you read a little further you would understand why there is no sound. I saw it with the sound and it was FANTASTIC! Dharma, I hope it moves forward- sounds like Karma, or maybe people's need for greed. Sad. PB sure was a gift to us all. Cheers.
Hi Jettbugg, we have had ongoing discussions with Warner Music about this clip. We have permission to use the music in this and the other clip on this youtube page. As we near resolution, we are keeping the clip up until this is completely take care of. We will probably re-load the video when all is resolved. Thanks for your interest.
We have spoken with the legal dept of Elektra in 2004 who granted permission and again with legal dept of WMG who notified all depts. of WMG that in fact we do have permission. However apparently thier random sweeps have overlooked that permission has been granted. It is a lengthy and annoying problem but will be resolved.
So impressive! So influential! The consummate adolescent break-out song - "Born In Chicago". It blew away the Beatles and even James Brown. Live at Club 47 in Cambridge was an epiphany.
Nice video...we need more like this...great insight about one of my music heroes and contributed to my start, as many were influenced by this man!...thanks for post!
Please, is this out yet? I met Paul in NYC and he told me, "Always carry your harp on you, and never give up playing, even if they say you don't sound good, coz if I did I wouldn't be who I am today". The nicest words of widsom. He was my mentor and harp idol.
What a gift Paul was! My all-time favorite harp player and the primary reason I took up the harp as a teen - can anyone else make this little 6-inch instrument sound like an entire horn section?? I think not! He was one-of-a-kind for sure!
Many fans have come forward to appreciate our efforts to produce this documentary, and have expressed a desire to know more about how the blues began. The Delta Blues go back centuries, something beautiful borne from the evil of slavery and oppression in the south.
We've been to the Mississippi Delta, and lauded the sons of Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. We pay our respects to the fathers of the blues and understand their gift to the world. Paul, may he rest in peace, is their kindred son.
Even though I find it insulting that Paul isn't much avaivable in the music stores, I feel priviledged that I am ammong the few that enjoy this man's music. Again, thank you DharmaBum333.
This must be the 20th time I watch this video. I am just completly amazed by, not the skill that Paul Butterfield had, because skill count's for shit, but by that soul that shines trough his whole creation, like Corky says. I find that it is an insult that I can't find Paul in any music store.Maybe I'm not seaching in the right place.
The Paul Butterfield Fund & Society is about positive vibes. Paul himself spread good vibes. He did his own thing, and never spoke badly about another harp player or criticized their music.
Because Paul was about positive things, this page is designed to bring people together. All are kindly invited to share their positive comments here...whether they liked Paul's music or not. Negative comments may kindly be directed to a page that welcomes negativity.
Blues Harp Hall Of Famer (and all round musician) for sure...
Please, if can..include in your documentary the types of gear he preferred, and his influences. He helped paved the way for amplified blues. His choice in gear and how he used it was nothing short of amazing.
He needs to be remembered for generations. Thanks again.
It's very good that you are doing this. Paul Butterfield was a great musician and he has to be remebered. Can anyone tell me what's the name of the song that is playing during the interwiew with Corky Siegel? Thanks. :D
Thom thanks so much for your great site and in being part of PBFS. All your works are incredible and it is an honor to have you with us. For fans we have several sites and answer all e-mails. Thanks for all the fond words from everyone directed to Gabriel's father--PB. It is very touching. With warmth Salli & Gabriel (PBFS)
V:A tease sneak view of some of the live interviews filmed to date will also be presented this year at an assembly w/Paul's school mates in Chicago. PBFS is also working on the development of a CD Library for Youth among many other ongoing projects. We hope that you will Please Check Out Our Various PBFS Sites for further insight to our educational & charitable endeavors We're in the process of developing, adding new materials & improving all sites. Hang in there with us as we grow & expand
IV:There has been little to no accurate coverage on PB & as he has passed in 1987, this is a dedicated team effort from the loving memory of PB's son--Gabriel Butterfield, Gabriel's wife--Salli Squitieri & award winning film producer Thom Pollard to present the man, the father, the friend & the musical journey of Paul Butterfield. This film will be used for educational purposes, at schools, museums, festivals & hopefully when completed for both TV and an actual movie.
III:PBFS presented Sam Lay founding drummer for Howlin' Wolf & PBBB w/an Award of Recognition, thus continuing w/ honoring many musicians that era & from the years of PBBB. There is no telling where this film will lead, we're putting it together as the first time ever film documentary on Gabriel's father--Paul Butterfield. Consideration that more has been done on the many musicians who have emerged from PBBB, many who still have careers & are being represented
II:PBFS is dedicated to Gabriel's father just as Allen Bloomfield honors his brother w/a site for Michael. Please visit the Official Michael Bloomfield website established in loving memory by Allen, friends & family. As friends of Allen's we've made special request for his appearance on the film documentary to represent Michael & prepare short stories regarding Michael for our sites. However, it is not our obligation to represent anyone else, but rather our fond desire to do so
Part I: Hi Folks: Happy New Year! Thanks for all the great comments. In answer to some of the questions. No there is no PB daughter. Yes, we not only honor Michael w/features & birthday specials as part of our many projects but likewise on our many other sites, but the film will be although dedicated to Gabriel's father, will as well help to preserve the memory & legacy of all the other musicians who worked, toured or emerged from PB's bands.
Hay... I was at a Marlin's baseball game here in Miami, I'm sure it was in 1997... We were in a rain delay, and young woman with a kid and I guess her husband were sitting in front of us in the upper deck behind home plate. She heard me talking about music, and then she told me that she was Paul Butterfield's daughter...
just loved his sound. Then got a chance to see him in St. Paul at Midway Stadium in 1971 or 72, i can still him up their on stage like it was yesterday. Thank You Paul in my mind you are still the king.
Paul Butterfield was my friend..something I am very proud to say.. It was very much as Gabriel says it, Paul was a very complex multi faceted man, highly intelligent and had a great sense of who was real and sincere and who was not and that was really important in those days.. I was 17 when I first met him.. I learned so much from Paul about playing as I play pretty good harp myself as well as guitar and also a lot about confidence and being a man and a musician..
I can't wait for this documentary to be reality.Paul Butterfield was responsible for so much great music.he was always evolving and never stayed in one place. Some incredible musicians came through his bands.I think if he was around now he would be held in incredibly high esteem as a true musical pioneer.East West totaly blew my mind when it came out.
I've been a "professional" harp player now for over 30yrs.Paul was responsible for that. The first time I heard his tone I was completely captivated by blues harp. This music has taken me a lot of places, met alot of people, most of whom have been similarly changed by Butters music.Corky nails it. Soul. I got to see Paul only once but it was enough. At the Last Waltz in SF.Seared into my psyche forever!!! Best of luck Gabe and PBFS in the production of this documentary

Can't wait until the documentary comes out. Then folks will be able to see the influence he had on music. Like they said, the man had an edge and played from the depths of his soul.
Great singer, great harp player and great bandleader. East West is the best album ever. Singlehandedly started the San Fransisco revolution with that one instrumental. If you ever meet somebody that doesn't own East West, buy it for him. If you meet somebody who doesn't like that album, kill him (figure of speech).
Met him at the Lone Star Cafe NYC 1977 or 78 , I was 16 . He shook my hand & asked me for $50.00 bucks .

Paul was also a wonderful singer blessed with truly great pipes and a whole truckload of soul. Beautiful singer, great tone a range.

Loved the vid and Butter always- Sam Lay- always was a class guy..
Corky Siegel cracked me up with his condescending self importance - holding his fingers "this much soul" - what BS
Butter had more to 'say' in one solo than Corky's whole bag of tricks!
