  • I could imagine the cold weather in Canada. Stay safe and warm. It is a great idea. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  • i did the pallet thing one winter works good now how go at the beach collect drift wood lot easyer lol thanks for vid

  • Pallets burn extremely hot, what do you burn them in? Can the wood stove/fireplace take the heat?

  • FREE: FIREWOOD

  • You had me, dude, until the fateful line "I like Stephen Harper, though". May all your pallets be wet and painted!

  • You should be on Trailer Park Boys, you're to fire wood what Bubbles is to carts. Nice video dude ha ha.

  • I didn't know 'get another load of wood' is code for 'get another case of Olympia beer'!

  • good vid. Those pallets burn so fast, though.

  • Just a question for you.................would'nt you be a bit warmer if you also had a moustache?

  • its not good to burn those slabs because of the glue used in them - very poisonous chemicals come out of that.

  • does it matter if you burn the painted ones?

  • Ill let u in on a secret, u can get money recycling pallets

  • Some of those pallets are good oak wood!!Only problem I would have with pallets as far as using them for my 100% of my wood is they burn up too fast.I mean you can't bank the stove up with them it will over heat and soon be out atleast in my stove you may have a better stove.Oh free is allways my favorite price LOL.You are collecting them as insurance i guess in case you run out of your regular wood during bad cold weather don't blame you one bit thats scary...

  • What do you do as far as tearing the pallets apart or do you just cut them up or bust them up with a sledge hammer? Seems tearing them apart is a pain because the type of nails that are used do not like to come out.

  • @wildbill23c ...cut the pallets apart..i use a circular saw with cheep walmart blades...

  • @squidskunk

That works too, I just used my chainsaw with a dull chain. Seemed to work ok.

  • I pay $25 for a wood cutting permit and can get up to 4 cords of wood per year for $25 plus about a tank of gas in the truck and some gas for the chain saw. However I have gone and picked up pallets anytime I see them advertised for free. Anything that's free I try and take if I see a use for it.

  • Get with a tree service. They may be willing to drop off truckloads of logs at your place for free or for a nominal fee. Also slabs from sawmills. Small ones, anyway.

  • gotta make sure they aren't chemically treated if you want to burn them, if they are really good hard wood you'd probably get more money selling them and buying good hard firewood instead of wasting that resource

  • Looks like me (without the beard) Bla bla blah FIREWOOD and Blah blah bla allow me a slurp of Country style coffee Blah blha lhba The hell with politics...Burn the damn nails who cares its free...

  • Im pretty sure most pallets are pine shit wood. And also the blue pallets have pressure treatment or some type of chemical in the wood.. I would not burn weird wood in your stove you can get harmful fumes in your house...Pallets are for bomb fires. I would get a job and buy cord hard wood to burn..Cheers!!!

  • my neighbour used to take his pallets to the skip , but i installed a log burner last year and now he gives me then pallets, free heat for the house , it only costs me my time and the price of a blade for my bushman saw =£3.99

  • Nice...I like the way you think. I use these to store my split wood. What kind of stove do you burn these in? Also, a video showing the most efficient way to cut these things up would be great, I'm always trying different techniques. Cutting without hitting the nails is tough

  • This will come in handy this coming Fall and Winter of 2011 when energy prices go thur the roof !!

  • You are the Pallet King. Free dry firewood is a great deal, eh. GO FLYERS!!!

  • peace

  • Burning Pallets alone will throw Sparks, becareful - their good to Mix in with fire wood tho to help throw out heat, but not too many !

  • @TheAMERICANTYRANNY Pallets are great in a wood burner. No problem with sparks and pretty efficient. I hardly ever use any other wood

  • Try burning PINE. It's almost free and there isn't any more creosote from pine if it is DRY than hardwood. Google burning pine......... and save.

  • Most stores have t pay a deposet on those skids your useing i found out when a cop pulled me over and gave me a warnning for STEELING.

  • @garybrown33 I get pallets from building supplies depots. Some of the pallets have a deposit on them but many dont so they let me have those that dont have a deposit. No problem.

The cop probably didnt know what he was talking about

  • gotta make sure they aren't chemically treated if you want to burn them, if they are really good hard wood you'd probably get more money selling them and buying good hard firewood instead of wasting that resource

  • yeah, they are sprayed with arsenic to prevent the termite infestation here in the US: I burned some and managed to breathe that nasty smoke, gave me a headache and my lungs swelled up.

  • Hi Mate, look up my pallet wrecking bar on youtube, its very easy to make and use, cheers Dave NE UK

  • Cool beard dude

  • @Mag4live I don't have a collage degree but my secretary does.

  • @Mag4live let's put your ass up there in cold temperatures in winter, and watch you die from the cold. it's called SURVIVAL.

  • good video on reality. When barack hussein obama puts me in the poorhouse, at least i will know where to get my warmth- pallets. Thanks again 5/5

  • Most pallets are not treated anyone without a collage degree who works for a living can tell you that! Modern stoves burn so hot that any small amount of paint will be toast. I'm sure you use them for kindling anyway. Burn baby burn!

  • Please don't burn the painted pallets. especially in an open fireplce. The burning paint releases toxic fumes in to the atmosphere and in some cases your home.

  • You are a good surviver, and thats good mate. But dont forget to put Spiritual first, your esence what you will become and are in advance. Then you will never fail.

All best for you and your family.

  • I built an entire pig pen out of pallets, also used them to put down a floor in an old barn worked great for both.. :-)

  • I built an entire pig pen out of pallets, also used them to put down a floor in an old barn worked great for both.. :-)

  • I built an entire pig pen out of old pallets worked great.

  • you cant burn those pallets with stain or paint on them!! Not good for your chimney and also they cause fumes.

  • I was always told that there is a risk to burning pallets watch for chemical spills on them because sometimes they ship barrels on the skids and a fork will penetrate a barrel then you have the risk.

IF you check out Daves farm he has a stove design that uses radiant heat. His design is really what you would need if you are burning wood that is from a commercial source. Dave built his shop with an underground air induction system so that when he got air it was from the cold out doors not inside

  • we sell fire wood in the winter and can harvest wood in alot of place for free a great time to get wood is when the utility company comes threw and cuts all the trees back and you can take it for free and alot of them will deliver to your door for free if you live near by

    the cheap guy

  • What about chemicals that are sometimes sprayed on these pallets? How do you tell that?

  • YUP, I burn 'em up here in Maine too. Think heavy- heavy stuff comes on hardwood pallets- most heat for least stoking. Tile, Bricks, Sakrete, usually come on hardwood pallets. I collect about 30 pounds of nails over the winter with my magnet dragged thru the ashes. I send with other scrap to the metal yard. Watch out cutting up "repaired" pallets- the nails can be anyplace!

    Thanks! Right ON!

  • love the giggle about the economy. hehe. i collect pallets also for fire wood. i used them to build a dog house, raised gardens, window boxes, and paint them to make primitive signs which i sell at market. All free just need a truck, muscle, and the will to collect them. :)

  • thanks for sharing

  • looks like you burn painted pallets, skids

  • those pallets are a nightmare. i buy the more expensive hardwood for the stove. the soft stuff goes into the masionary fire place it burns so hot it doesnt matter if there is paint on it.

  • how much wood does one need to heat a home all winter?

  • @SUPERPHANTAZM 1 cubic meter holds about 1500- 2000KWH of energy one Cubic meter of Natural gas has 10KWH one liter of oil has 10KWH and 10 KWH of electricy has 10 Kwh of power. for my 100M² home in germany year temp from +37 to -20 6 cubic meters should do for safety i hold 10 at the ready

  • Where I used to work the store was charged between $75 and $200 for pallets that we did not return. The blue ones with "CHEP" painted on them (like the one on the bottom of the stack that you were leaning on) cost $150 per pallet. you are lucky to get all of those free ones.

  • does it matter if you burn the nails?

  • @meandkg not have never had any issues form that

  • @meandkg When disposing of ashes you can get free nails using a big magnet. You just have to temper those back and they'll be fine.

  • @meandkg theres no issues i have been heating with mostly pallets for 5 years and burning the nails are fine

  • @meandkg it's no issue to burn with the nails and staples, just sift through the ash before you toss it in the garden.

  • @meandkg ...Ive been burning pallets for a decade now and i find the nails in the ash hold quite a bit of heat..that helps extend the fuel...its a good thing...lol

  • @meandkg

No, but don't dump the ashes anywhere that you will drive your car.

  • Taking those is illegal here because people sell them i guess. They will get you for robbery if they catch you taking them in some areas so beware of that...make sure you are allowed to take them.

  • Another cool thing to do with them is make a small house or shelter. Look up on youtube, " building with pallets" I think the first couple vids are the best.

  • @zekehooper thanks i will

  • @HomesteadAcres I did, thats awesome, i'm gonna try and build one!

  • nice but you should watch the painted ones as they will gum up your chimney

  • Lmao! This guy is really something xD

  • Some of the best places to find good firewood is from logging companies.

After the clear timber out of a woods, they usually leave the tree tops. Some will let you come in and cut after they are done.

Theres been times were I have gotten 100 loads or so.

One things for sure, you must have 4 wheel drive.

  • I thought amish people didn't like video cameras?

  • @HoofSupport he's not amish.. I saw him mention it in one of his videos.

  • @gillbatesiii Yeah I was being sarcastic. He's got a total Jedidiah beard going.

  • My husband and sons and I live in Alaska on 5 acres -not exactly a "homestead" in the truest sense, although we have had chickens and a garden -and will have in the future. I already know about some of the topics you cover, but it is always interesting to see how other folks do things. I particularly like your sense of humor!

  • nice vid man but isnt it bad to burn wood with nails in it in your wood stove?

  • Might be interesting to tap into your knowledge of using skids in your house wood stove, for burning, and the best ways to cut the skids up.

I've been around "wood stoves" for many years, but never actually owned one. We have bought one and it will be installed this week.

Trying to learn what I can about wood storage, what's good wood, bad wood, etc.....

  • have you seeen the rocket stoves

  • Hey Homestead! Firewood Tips:1) I place an ad in local free rag for "free tree removal" Amazing response every time. Only 1 I had to turn down, too dangerous. 2) Picked up about 600 pcs 4x4x42-48 inch hardwood blocks from local steel fabricator( plus got paid to clean them up) and he saves them for me now. This allows me to sell my surplus fire wood.

    Keep your eyes open

    Keep on keepin' on!

  • Hey thanks and good idea , I know about free tree removal i would try that but alot of prople want them cut down near houses roads and hydro lines but still that might work for anyone who has a lane way or trees in the back yard thanks for sharing

  • In these parts the hydro will come to remove offending branchs from around lines(no charge) and the DOT has set up a detour and barricade and gave me 2 hours to clear the lane. The rest is up to me. takes nerves, knowledge and prayer.

Plus good equipment and more prayer. Anyway getting through all your vids, very sincere, interesting and down to earth.

    Thanks

  • LOL i like that the praying is the most energenic part isnt it i know what you mean then is not the time for your saw to quit lol thanks

  • looks like your having fun drinking a ice cold beer

  • painted skids are bad to burn

  • lol free air conditioning :P it's about time for our free air conditioning to come in, however we dont have a wood stove. We are a little lucky and have a natural gas central heater which is far cheaper to run than a similar electric one. We have a place for a wood stove but just havent got one yet.

  • Aren't all the nails a pain in the butt?

  • yep that they are

  • "nails a pain?" not really....cut the pallets in smart fashion, they don't come into play. they take up nearly no room in a wood stove. throw them out with the ashes or recycle. don't burn pressboard, painted or treated pallets. Other than that, they burn really hot (help keep chimney clean), so are good for fire start up, initial warming.

  • Yeah I have a shaker grate in my stove and the nails get lodged in and I can't shake it.

  • aha. I have a really old stove with no ashpan. I take a shovel...maybe every 5 days,...and put them in a metal bucket.

  • Great idea! Saves money and recycles, its a win-win.

  • Around here the groceries pay a deposit fee for every skid delivered, and they get a credit back for it, when the distributor picks them up after unloading the next shipment. Its $12 for the heavy duty blue ones and $8 for a regular one. It can add up quick to lose them so they don't let them get away.

  • Excellent idea my friend and great video. Thanks for sharing your tip with everyone!

  • A lot more people in the UK are using wood for heating ,where I work several of us raid the dumpsters and get tons of scrap wood.

  • What do you have in your hand? A cup of coffee or tea? Nice vids!!!

  • good old coffee not timhortons lol

  • good video, winter will be coming back before you know it.

Also, is it all safe to burn?

I have heard that some pallets the wood is treated and that burning can release toxins.

Another thing...Stephen Harper is a TOOL.

watch the puppet is this video

    watch ?v=SfSZLnzoSPA

Who writes his speeches, same guy that writes the australians PM speeches?

  • well some skids are ether painted or presure treated (green) i dont burnthose ones as for harper everyone is intiteled to an opinion thats for sure but out of all the ones in my time to me you might say he is the lesser of evils i guess i just like some of there policys but not all

  • Politics is slimy, never seen a politician yet that doesn;t talk from both sides of his mouth.

Watch that video, you will understand why Harper is just another bought and paid for politician owned by the corporation called "CANADA".

  • @doobsta that's what I was thinking too.. one of those pallets look like it was made from wood chips held together by glue

  • What a scrounger! I like it!!

  • great video here its $75.00 a cord up to $150.00

  • I get mine free from the amish lumber mill, all i want for free.

My hubby works full time so its my job to get(load and unload) all the fire wood...

  • Get my wood from a pallet manufacturing place (Amish owned). Mostly oak. big chunks, and small kindling. $5 a pickup load.

  • What does a cord 16"x4'x8' of wood go for down there?

  • Between 60 and 80.00 and higher in the winter.

  • @HomesteadAcres How much doe's a cord weigh? I know here in Australia, wood is sold by the metric ton(1000kg's),and they charge between $180-00 -$220-00..most of it is redgum,(an extremely heavy hard wood)..fantastic for burning, last's for ages and gives off tremendous heat, the other most popular is Mallee, another long burning hardwood, and the stumps from them are probably considered one of the best firewoods in the world, once you get your fire going, put a couple on,and your'e set for the night.

  • @catey62 A cord isnt a weight its a mesurement of volume basicly. it is 4 feet tall by 4 feet wide by 8 feet long. a cord is what you can fit in that dimension. various woods will have diffrent weights due to density.
