@MeH8Haterz I agree, very stupid but lucky idiot. Had no rudders in the water going over the falls. Risked his life and $500,000 due to having no patience. Very bad decision even though he fluked it.
lucky........thats all i can say ...i woulda sailed around the top of moreton isl ,and back down in to moreton bay....awell.....try jumpin pin next time ay?.....lol
what a dumb fuck, 2 days sailing or risk a 500 000 dollar yacht? cool footage, wish he yanked a hard right and fucked up his yacht, just to see the interview afterwards, "..should've sailed the 2 days, wah wah, my half a million dollar yacht"
@1ghostronin ....................totally agree......he must be loaded with tons of dosh to risk that, and time-poor to do it.......however I'm glad he did it for our entertainment!
Surfed waves way bigger on a 16 Hobie. Pretty much the main reason for slammin the surf to get off the beach. Just to surf the cat. imo this is less than shit. If ya sail ya know im correct......This pig is way easier than a small cat to surf with.
It doesn't bother me that he attempted this, and I wouldn't have particularly cared if he'd capsized. What would of annoyed me is that if this hadn't gone to plan we all would have had to sit through the news story about the 'tragic' sailing accident.
@Pigeon1888 Your so wrong mate. This was a very dangerous act, even for a boat this size. The boat could have shifted side on and rolled. The driver of this vessel was lucky in this case. I pity all the rescuers that would have to risk their own lives if it had gone wrong.. No one should do this
@coastrunner536 He was perpindicular to the wave mate, just as he should have been. Water doesn't want to push against 2 hulls side on when it can push against 2 hulls front on, path of least resistance yeah? The wave was what kept him perpendicular, was what ensured he wasn't going to "shift side on" as you put it. The bloke knew what he was at, no big deal, full stop.
@Pigeon1888 I have to disagree. There was no guarentee he wasn`t going to nose dive. His rudders were almost out of the water at the back, and the boat did start to twist sideways at the beginning of the wave. I still believe there was a great chance that this could have gone horribly wrong.
This guy is and idiot to even attempt this. If it did go wrong some rescue crew would have to put there life on the line to recover the NooB. Just wait it out or head to the next port. Risk the life of everyone else on the boat. DICKHEAD
I did this same thing sailing a 16' Hobie Cat thru the surf in Mexico. I had to make a sharp turn to avoid a swimmer. The result was a capsize in the surf throwing me into the water and carrying my new bride (who was on the high side) to shore. Based on that experience I would never chance certain death in the event of a capsize to avoid a 2 day sail. After all isn't that why you went sailing in the first place?!
I rolled small 16 foot catamaran in the surf at Laguna Beach California in 1969. The cat had those banna bows and the forward third of the downwind float went under water. The boat just stopped and the wave pushed it compleatly over. The mast snapped off when it ihit the bottom and the cross beams just folded up. No one was hurt. The newer modern cats have bluff bows and big sholders providing lots of bouncy foward. Causing the boat bows to rise and not bury in the wave.
As a boater of 30 plus years I feel the captain showed exception driving skills...Those cats track hard and you can lose it quickly with a following sea... Good job skipper!!!!!!!!!!!
Obviously the comments from the skipper is not "belsloan"...my dad has been using my account to answer comments. You can contact him directly about it if you want on iansloan3@hotmail.com thanks
actually considered that but I really did not expect to be caught up with because sea conditions indicated that we would enter safely during the long calms between the sets. If you watch the film you will see that the waves following the one we were on were significantly bigger, and as is usual the remaining waves of the set were increasing in size.the one I caught was the baby......ian, Skipper
Most cats will surf just fine, raise the boards and don't get sideways and no worries, looked like a fun ride. Not an idiot, a competent helmsman that knows his boat's capabilities.
@ricdanger2 I do take exception to this type of uninformed comment. Certainly there was risk involved, however advice from coastguard indicated that the sea had settled significantly and as skipper it was my call to either abort or enter. This decision was taken after discussing the situation with the two VERY experienced sailors accompanying me. Both were keen to enter, ALL CREW were wearing P.F.D's however harnesses were elected to be dangerous for this situation and were not worn.
There is some equation you can apply regarding boat speed Vs wave speed but generally speaking your boat speed has to be less than a 10 ie if wave doing 10mph you do 1mph so as not to surf, than you can motor it sitting on the back of the wave, until a bigger faster one behind catches you up and....you do it all again- reverse to your boat is at least at a tenth of the wave speed,.
as stated befor always happens out to sea but thats pussing your luck, would have been nice to se another angle to know how much room and depth you had

I have surfed at sea with full sail and the bows under, Believe me crossing the bar looked spectacular, but was safer than doing bows under with sail.
There was an instant when the rudders were out of the water where he almost lost it. A catamaran has no keel, so had he flipped, his mast would have dug in, and he would have gotten hammered.
@riparianlife97701 Not so, rudders were never 'out of the water'. The Perry has very large rudders, thus giving them exceptional tracking ability. She does have keels as well. They are called mini keels and the vessel draws 1.3 metres....ian sloan Skipper.

Calm down you bunch of puffs, people do this all the time over rough bars sailing into various ports all over the UK, NZ and Australia.
It's not like it was a 24' runabout for fuck's sake, it's a 40' ocean going catamaran, more than capable of such a maneuver.
Stop complaining and admire the guy for having some balls, more than you lot obviously.....
