It's interesting listening to this version of the song, how much a song evolves over time. Freeborn Man was written by Mark Lindsay and Keith Allison in the late 60's, but their arrangement and playing style is very different from this one. About the only thing the two versions have in common are the words and basic tune.
Martin was and IS widely known as the King of Bluegrass....Monroe- the Father of it. Jimmy was the original outlaw, he sang with abandon. Monroe may have invented the style, but Jimmy owned it....and made it seem like he was having fun!
Jimmy Martin was a great and important bluegrass musician but to call him the "King of Bluegrass" was about as silly as calling Paul Whiteman the "King of Jazz".
Bill Monroe may have improperly called himself the "Father Of Bluegrass". However, Jimmy Martin really was the "King of Bluegrass". No doubt about it!
Awesome... I like Jimmy's style actually more than most of the other BG acts back then - he added a little rowdy piss-n-vinegar to his approach that was just too cool. Interesting to note that before the Kentucky Headhunters were covering Bill Monroe, the Outlaws were covering Jimmy Martin!
Hello to all of you jimmy martin fans yes he is a great magision but when it came down having a heart I guess he wasn't born with one unfortunally. If he did it was ice cold.. And unfortunally like father like son because his son (my father) lil' jimmy, timmy whatever you may call him sure hasn't been my father and I actually beg him too and have been extremely forgiving.. But hopefully one day the good lord will put this pain in my heart to rest
@jamimartin84 what are you trying to say--that jimmy was a magician in addition to being a bluegrass legend? are you also trying to say that you are jimmy's grandson--but you are not sure if your dad's name was jimmy or timmy? or did you not get left any money in the will? write back and use the hillbilly/english guide. i am not quite sure what you are saying
Somehow I had lived another Life in the South. My home is in NEW YORK, but my Heart, and Soul is in Tennessee, or Texas, or Georgia, or maybe even Alabama . Be proud your a rebel cause the Souths gonna do it again CDB 1975
@RSpears596 mark lindsay(not lyndsey). their version is awesome as well. hard not to do a great version of a classic, origially on the alias pink puzz lp
Anybody got any copy of Jimmie Martin from orig. Decca (#28912), "Christmas Choo Choo/I Love To Ride With Santa," c.1953....? I need a recording of this.
Jimmy Martin's the best dude ever! His music and his vocal speak to me like none other. His songs are all instant classics...
Too darn bad that a bunch of racist republican redneck idiots make up a good portion of his following. If W or Maverick were in charge, they'd stomp the queers and free thinkers into the ground so that all the narrow minds could prevail.
Where the heck did country music go wrong??!??! I'd embrace modern country if it sounded more like Raplh Stanley, Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, etc.
theres no use in embracing a music genre. just pick out the good artists and listen to them. you dont want to bow yourself in wearing a shirt saying "i embrace country music". in any genre theres jewels and crap, and you have to weed them out.

Won't be any songs like that sung or written in obamaland: a nation of obama wimps, politcally correct, lazy ass welfare moms (and dads) , potheads, and queers...won't be ANY ORIGINAL OR CREATIVE songs written or sung in the Union, of Soviet Socialist States of America (USSSA)

Yup, I'm afraid you're right. The stupid people in this country wont wake up in time to realize their freedom has been sold out to the devil. Get out your guns boys, it's time to fight for freedom again!!!
Beg to differ. Some of the best russian symphony and strings were done during the soviet period, as well as written word. Educate yourself, ignorance will never work to your advantage. If you can not deal with folks that aren't the same color as yourself maybe you and your state should secede. Maybe you and glenn beck can go start your own white Utopia. As for me, I will continue to enjoy the bluegrass.
I'm talking about creativity, not the classics... two great authors don't make it - but never mind, you have your "opinion" of history, and then there's the truth.. In your ignorance you'll probably dance along to the tune of obama and his song of the "new world order"... The Battle Hymn of obama lama ding dong
"i say son don't you know nothin..damnit i learned bill munroe how to sang i am the king boy.....now if ye want this hear interview to continue straighten up...."
Bluegrass classic? Co-written by Keith Allison & Mark Lindsay... who both were regulars on the old "Where the Action Is" pop music TV show back in the 60s. Hosted by eternal teen-ager Dick Clark.
A true example of "cross-pollination" of musical genres... ain't America great!
Thanks for posting this video. Do you have the one where Jimmy sings "When the savior reached down his hand for me"? It was on youtube last year but someone took it off. If you have it, post it please. Thanks again
