@dtwilight73 I thought of two reasons why life feeds on life- living things maintain the quality of their molecules and small structures. Non-life does not. Also, rocks don't produce proteins or organic-compatible parts with which organisms repair their bodies, or at least not in sufficiently regular pieces. I imagine that an organism could not survive by using irregular parts, and sifting through rocks to find a few perfect pieces would require too much energy.

Even if the bugs were the only type of creature that could live from rocks or sand or whatever, then they would have predecessors: animals evolve- they don't just spring up. These bugs are thriving like crazy, so their ancestors would have COVERED the planet. But where are these ancestors? Did the bugs kill every last organism on the entire planet? And why would they do that when they don't need to compete for food?

@jagarcia0705 The bugs have "antenni", which are apparently nothing like insect antenni, since they can pick up radio frequencies and that draws the bugs to the troopers. They would never have evolved this because it's useless without something creating radio waves in the first place. So if they could communicate that way, or if prey creatures produced radio waves, then it would make sense. But it adds to how funny the program was :)

Pretty sure the book addresses this... highlighting that the bugs tend to nest underground and that any surface bombardment wouldn't be able to take out the bulk of them, nor flush them out... and unlike human enemies that would be trapped underground, they can easily break through again, not to mention survive on whatever's underground in still large enough numbers to be dangerous. Mind, it has been awhile since I've read the book...

i think they eat what ever can sustain them dead bodies of enemies or friendlies but i doubt they are designed to survive long enough to have to consume precious resources that could go to the bug laying their eggs.
