"beat" or "beatnik" was a style popular in the 50s. it was greatly influenced by people like jack kerouac and allen ginsberg and paved the way for people like the beatles and bob dylan in the 60s. i don't get why everyone is giving him/her thumbs down...they're asking a question and the only way to learn is by asking. ask or live in ignorance. sorry not everyone is as "enlightened" as you guys...

I think it's cause the hippies happened in the 60s when everything became all crazy; tv went color, models like Twiggy began to define what woman "should" look like, it was in a sense the birth of the media age, not to mention hippies were a lot rowdier "NOTICE ME, END THE WAR!" haha. The beatniks were kinda underground and kept to themselves, didn't really care what went on outside of their own group. It's a shame they're lesser known, I find the beats much more interesting than the hippies.

I think a lot of it is simple numbers: the baby boomers were too young to be beatniks, but old enough to be the hippies after them. Baby boomers know very well who the Beats were! The beatniks were too small a demographic to be visible in a lasting way
