USC had a lot more talent than Texas all around, but Texas just played better fundamental football and played as a team. Not to mention, USC was playing a home game in Pasadena. How is that for a "neutral" site!
As a Longhorn fan myself, I must disagree with you. USC had more talent offensively, but defensively Texas had the greater number of talented players. Consider that all top 5 DBs on that Longhorn roster were drafted and Aaron Ross, a first round pick after the following season, was the nickel corner.
Both teams were stocked with talent, though. You look at their rosters and it's a who's who of NFL players.
Florida State was a really underrated team, probably the best 8-5 team I'd ever seen. But also, don't forget, they lost two key players (Tony Hunt and Paul Pusluzney) for that game, and made a key mistake at the end (fumbling at the 1 yard line), preventing a game clinching touchdown. But Penn State still won anyway. And many of USC's victories were unimpressive, while Penn State handily beat some good teams. Maybe "crushed" was too strong an adjective, but I do think they could have beaten USC.

AND that lateral from vince young and a fumble after the catch from texas where they ruled a drop instead. AND usc was about to stop texas on their last drive but darnell bing got a facemask penalty which gave them the 1st down. and after all that they lost by 3 in the last minute
I'll admit it was a game that could have gone either way, but a game with Penn State in the mix could have also gone either way (PSU vs Texas or USC vs PSU). And it was very possible, too, since a #1 and #3 national championship game isn't unheard of if the bowl wants to keep conference ties, or the #2 is bound to another bowl.

For example, they had the Ohio State game in the bag 21-19 until with 21 seconds remaining, Troy Smith scrambled for a TD. USC had a good offense, but so did Penn State, and Penn State's defense was like a brick wall that year. Penn State also beat up on a good Wisconsin team and a decent Minnesota team.

USC had a lot more talent than Texas all around, but Texas just played better fundamental football and played as a team. Not to mention, USC was playing a home game in Pasadena. How is that for a "neutral" site!

As a Longhorn fan myself, I must disagree with you. USC had more talent offensively, but defensively Texas had the greater number of talented players. Consider that all top 5 DBs on that Longhorn roster were drafted and Aaron Ross, a first round pick after the following season, was the nickel corner.
Both teams were stocked with talent, though. You look at their rosters and it's a who's who of NFL players.

Florida State was a really underrated team, probably the best 8-5 team I'd ever seen. But also, don't forget, they lost two key players (Tony Hunt and Paul Pusluzney) for that game, and made a key mistake at the end (fumbling at the 1 yard line), preventing a game clinching touchdown. But Penn State still won anyway. And many of USC's victories were unimpressive, while Penn State handily beat some good teams. Maybe "crushed" was too strong an adjective, but I do think they could have beaten USC.

ok well usc played an undefeated texas team. and they had a lot of mistakes and missed opportunities. like the reggie lateral. and texas fumbled about 4 times but usc only recovered the ball once. AND that lateral from vince young and a fumble after the catch from texas where they ruled a drop instead. AND usc was about to stop texas on their last drive but darnell bing got a facemask penalty which gave them the 1st down. and after all that they lost by 3 in the last minute

I'll admit it was a game that could have gone either way, but a game with Penn State in the mix could have also gone either way (PSU vs Texas or USC vs PSU). And it was very possible, too, since a #1 and #3 national championship game isn't unheard of if the bowl wants to keep conference ties, or the #2 is bound to another bowl.

o yea and u worded it wrong. they handily beat 1 good team and that was ohio state. they lost to a michigan team that had a down year. and what do u mean by usc's wins being unimpressive? i dont know if u remember but nobody couldve stopped their offense that year. ill admit their defense sucked but their offense made up for it every time. i dont have anything against penn state but im pretty sure not that many people will say penn state wouldve beat usc.

Penn State did lose to a 7-5 Michigan team, but it was from a couple bad calls, but even if we forget that, it was a Michigan team that was always seconds away from a different ballgame. For example, they had the Ohio State game in the bag 21-19 until with 21 seconds remaining, Troy Smith scrambled for a TD. USC had a good offense, but so did Penn State, and Penn State's defense was like a brick wall that year. Penn State also beat up on a good Wisconsin team and a decent Minnesota team.
