Back when I was just a young spud, auto-tune was called vocoder, and if you wanted to sound like a funky musical robot it was what you used. It just took thirty years for mainstream pop music to incorporate and refine the experimental sound FX tools that Devo, Kraftwerk, and P-Funk helped introduce in the '70s. It's all part of the plan.
