The term islamofobia is used to suprese critique on islam. Hopper can come up with examples of reactions from websites saying horrible things about muslims which can not be accepted but that doesn't mean that the term isn't used to supress genuine critique. Here in Europe, the left progressives try it all the time by saying that critique of islam offends muslims as a persons too. Well so fucking what? Although I really dislike most american news channels, being prone to massive sensationalism and innaccuracy, I very much admire the amount of these kinds of debates.

The ones on Fox news do seem to be very biased, with the shows hosts always siding with either christian or right wing guests, but the debates on other channels such as the above have qualities I think british news channels could aspire to.

A phobia is an irrational fear but in the word "Islamophobia" the phobia part is not directly related to phobia as in the mental condition but to the Greek word "phobos" (=fear), named after the Greek god of fear.

Mental conditions with the word -phobia in them might be mosty irrational but that does not change the meaning of the word "phobos". Phobos says nothing about irrational or not. Phobos was the personification of fear of war. Not a very irrational fear in those days.

Little bit banal discussion of the term, but I think Prager gets this one right (and strangely, would be in agreement with Hitchens). Objectively speaking it can not only be done, but is reasonable to attack Islam, yet not its followers. Of the three monotheistic religions, Islam appears to have the highest ratio of followers who are willing to commit violence by their teachings.
