The AWD of this car was NOT designed for snow. It was designed for traction in cornering. nuff said. you want to drive in the snow buy a 4wd vehicle. BIG difference for all you flat-landers out there
@rmh31284 Actually the AWD is designed for a myriad of conditions including what you mentioned. But the distribution to the front should be better on call if this is indeed an AWD model. The "only for grip" excuse doesn't hold water- eh... especially since he needs "grip" in this situation, and just a bit of help from the front would get him going. I'm not making excuses for Porsche on this front.
@rmh31284 Porsche has a "snow experience" course in Finland., where you drive Porsches in the snow. Porsches are designed to perform in the snow as well.
Hey guys, I have a porsche 911 turbo, but I don't have snow tires and it's a all wheel drive. Can anyone recommend me the best snow tires? Cause I exceeded driving 60km/h in the snow and i dented someone's car and mine. Cheers.
@SkylineDrift9508 Well that was smart. Perhaps, get off the internet, go to a tire store and get a professional opinion, with money in hand to purchase some?
@SkylineDrift9508 Blizzaks, but remember all snow tires suck on pavement they will last 2 seasons at most. In my opinion just get some Micheline pilot a/s they are great in all conditions. Were just as good as my falken summer rubbers on handling, best ive had in rain (water channeling is amazing) and for snow the grooves and syphing is great for traction. All around the best tire imo im getting another set when these go out...
@cunniford that's just an optical illusion of the camera. If you watch carefully in the beginning, you can see the car jump forward when he puts it in gear. If he put it in reverse, it wouldn't go forward.
An Fzj80 has a viscous coupler in the center diff that acts like a limited slip. Land Rovers (AWD to) to my knowledge don't, that's why you hear "lock the center diff" all the time.
You **should** have some sort of Torsen or aid in your center diff, but a safety feature prollty has it not working in those conditions.
Noptig and nicky are both wrong. Generally, 4WD denotes a system meant for off road driving, often with a low range. AWD usually denotes a system meant for greater on road traction, stability and performance. BOTH systems, depending upon the manufacturers intent, have various front to rear and left to right torque splitting capabilities. No one system is perfect for all possible conditions, especially in lower priced vehicles.
@snowrocket oh crap, i always thought 4wd meant it could switch between RWD and AWD (like trucks, like you say, do).. and AWD is all four wheels, all the time..
Congrats. You fall for the oldest trick in the book. Consumer marketing.
All diffs have the same amount of power or else they won't work. One will be spinning.
Open diffs split the power till one loses traction then all the power goes to that wheel. In an open diff all traction is lost on the wheel with the LEAST amount of grip
Whether or not it has traction control from there I don't know or care.
TC means the brake grabs a spinning wheel a power transfers to the wheel with most traction
no, you didn't lose front wheel drive, you just didn't know how to drive in snow!

Guys regardless of why it has 4WD, atleast it's more practical in the snow than any other drivetrain.

try a subaru. japans version of a boxer engine, except it has symetrical awd that always works backwards or forwards.

Buy Range Rover for snow. Porsche is for tarmac, and 340km/h :)

4WD will work in reverse, AWD will not. AWD will activate when he puts it in a forward gear..

It's because he's going backwards... The diff has no influence in R.

you guys are arguing a non-issue...
4WD is almost AWD except 4WD generally gets lower gear ratios and puts full power to all wheels.

OMG. Learn the terms dude! 4WD does not mean AWD.
A Toyota Hilux is 4WD.
A Toyota Landcruiser is AWD.
Locking the center diff makes any AWD a 4WD.

do ya know the different between awd and 4wd ??????????
SpeedSiTypeS 3 years ago
all wheel drive is when the car decides when to give power and to what wheels, and 4wd is when all 4 wheels have power all the time
noptig 2 years ago
That isn't true.
Subaru - "Symmetrical ALL WHEEL DRIVE."
Which means each wheel is getting the same amount of power at all times. Which makes your statement false.
nickyb628 2 years ago
So it has no differentials? :) Or maybe you are talking about limited slip center diff?
