It my opinion it was AMC who made Jeep who they are today. Jeep was bland and boring while under ownership of Willys and Kieser. As soon as AMC bought Jeep in the late 60's they turned them around. Hell thats the only reason Chrysler wanted AMC was for its Jeep division. ChryCo got a boost tho by getting most of AMC's enginerring department that helped design all their cab-forward cars of the 90's.
Too bad AMC had to hook up with Renault! History will repeat itself soon the new chrysler /fiat merger. Not a good idea!! Fiats were always garbage, remember them from the 70s.??!! RIP AMC!!
There's a great coffee table book called, Crap Cars, by Richard Porter. Several of these Renaults are featured, and he describes the Alliance as, "This was a car of such crushing dismalness and feeble construction that it made you want to walk to work, even if your office was 70 miles away." I think that pretty much sums it up.
@jakesaintsrow123 I remember the Wagoneers most of all and a lot of those convertibles. Can't remember the names of most of them, but I do miss the days of seeing the old AMC letters on a car. They really were a decent car company but they didn't stand a chance with all the foreign auto-makers making a stand in the market. GM and Crysler look like they're on their way out and they've been around over 100 years combined.
Wow. It's amazing that AMC offered so much. That really got me in the spirit of AMC (no pun intended). Let's put aside any quality control problems with the Renaults. They are, for the 80s, sexy cars. The Jeep is an American classic, and the Eagle would've evolved come the early 90s. RIP AMC... Chrysler really didn't do them justice.
I have heard that Chrysler is going to kill off the commander, patriot, and compass. They are also apparently going to rename the Liberty back to the Cherokee.
All second hand heard, not sure if they are or are not.
If they do rename the liberty back to Cherokee, they need to give it solid front and rear axles, putting an independent suspension in the front f'd up a lot of offroad potential.
I've heard a lot about chrysler thinking about killing the compass and patriot. I didnt hear anything about the commander (my family has ties to chrysler). The Liberty was an overall failure along with the compass and patriot. If chrysler approached those cars differently by throwing larger engines in them, more solid axles, and more ground clearence they would be set. But it seems like all Jeep is concerned about nowadays is making grocery getters and trucks that will never leave the asphalt.
@offroadingjeep Agreed. If they Just threw in some Dana 44s and a 2 inch lift. and possibly a better 4wd system it would be good to go.. I just say they should pull some parts off a 87-96 Jeep Cherokee and start from there. The axles, the 4wd, and the engine were 100x better.
The Eagles were pretty good. Of course, they were basically Jeeps with a wagon body, so you have a point. The Renaults DEFINITELY sucked. New ones are so much better it's hard to believe they're the same company that made these shitboxes.
those renaults came from Mexico

Sad that AMC went out of business back then, it about the same effect on the big three as foreign competitors will put all them out of business.

I think there are like 6 good cars in this video, the rest are trash
you've got your AMC Eagle which was completely ahead of it's time and I wish they made more
you've got the Jeep Honcho, which they should have made more of
you've got the Cherokee which i sought after by plenty of offroad enthusiasts such as me
you've got the Grand Wagoneer, it was made from the 60s till the 90s enough said.
You've got the Jeep CJ which was the last true wrangler.
and then you have the CJ8 Scrambler.

Yeah, if they gave the Liberty Solid front and rear axles, lifted it 2 inches, that would be one off roader.

I like the 1:33 mark when they cut away just before that piece of shit does a barrel roll.
