I've longed believed that Simon Phillips has the best tom sound in the business. It's lke a bunch of cannons going off. The recording of this kit just reinforces that for me. I also like the fact that the music playing in the background is some of his best recorded work, such as Give Blood. Holy crap the drumming in that song is astounding.
My drums sound almost exactly like Simon's. I have a Ludwig Custom kit with interlacing maple and bubinga wood which in total equals 7-ply. I have 10", 12", 13" 16", and 18" toms (the 16 and 18" being the floor toms) with a 22" bass drum. I use Paiste cymbals, just my preference. I am not sure about the price on Simon's but mine, at 40%, was around 5,500 (in actuality it should have been around 10 grand). I have been saving for a while and my parents matched me dollar for dollar. Both are great.
The idea of mixing wood is better developed at Pearl Reference series...They pushed it further with different bearing edges and thickness for every drum individualy. :) Which kit sound better? I don't know... But I have a feeling that Tama's kit is developed for Simon's style of playing-soft and one ply heads etc,... Reference series are more "for everybody" just a thought.
Beautiful Kit,As for Simon, to me he 's simply a perfect drummer , I don't know any other way to put it , everything he does is perfect ,,at least to my ears ! Thanks Simon, for all your inspirartion !! Chris
I don't think I 'get' Simon philips' playing. The phrase at 3:18 for example, how would that sound with two toms? I find him to be a drummer that lets the kit do the talking, not his playing.
Starclassic maples kit is still my favorite! I've own four of them and won't be changing. Love Simon, but this kit didn't sound that "great" to me. Could be my speakers.
shit everyone is moving away fom the starclassic maples...I ve experienced bubinga ans maple sets from tama and, beside the big kick drum sound that the bubinga have, nothing sounds as clear and full as the SC maples!!!It's a pity that Tama does virtually no promotion to the SC maples its the all time classic...Simon always recorded with Maples...:(
I wouldn't be suprised if tama starting making a maple/bubinga hybrid kit next year. I might sound like a tama fanboi but for me starclassics are where it's at. Maple, biubinga, birch/birch bubinga they all sound awesome.
@spikeman23 My first kit was a Tama 'Camco' series, they still sound amazing, just replace the heads and bang they sound great but that was until I heard a real Ludwig kit, it changed me forever!! Ludwig drums just sing in perfect tune!! I recently played on a set of Tama Bubinga & was very impressed. But then I played on a new set of Ludwig's Legacy series, you couldn't get the smile of my face!! I love Tama but its Ludwig for me.
MY DREAM!

i would give nearly everything, exception my drums, to play at this kit one time.
Its completly unintresting what he says. just try to take a look at his hands, feets and see/listen to the wonder!

At the beginning when he says "Well hello there!" He sounds like Ben in star wars.

@Ambience20 It's Pete Townshend's "Give Blood" Which can be found on the 1985 "White City" album. Great, great CD!

Does it matter how it would sound with only 2 toms? He's playing a bigger kit, thus he can make that phrase and it sounds great.
RobResource 1 year ago
@RobResource I suppose it is his playing style and set-up preferance; no better or worse, just different.
Philzwhodrumz 1 year ago
I've never stated anything diffrerent, I was just responding to a negative comment.

@porthos08 I'm confused now; I meant that different set-ups and preferances are no better or worse than each-other, they are only different.

Waaiiiit, what does he mean by "transit" of the shell sound?
Salzcamino 1 year ago
@Salzcamino replace transient with the word "attack" and thats basically what he means
