Freeland Woolverton was my grandfather and I knew Clifton Clowers. I am posting a picture of Clifton's children with my husband, uncle and I on Facebook Woolverton page if anyone wants to see this. Clifton lived to be 103. The story was not really true, but it made for a good song. Merle Kilgore was my step-grandmother's nephew. Her sister was married to Clifton Clowers. Confused yet??? LOL
Please to see this on youtube and that you have the story right about it being about a real life man. My grandmother and grandfather were both raised up with Clifton. He lived to be 103. It was a sad day for my grandmother she was 99 at the time of his passing. He was the last friend living that she had grown up with. She passed also at the age of 103. Grandma now rest on Wolverton Mountain.
Very nice job. Always loved this song. Wow, I cant believe that you heard from Claude King directly, that was interesting. Stop by my channel sometime when you have a few minutes.
Great Job, Great rendition of this song. It was very popular on the Juke Box at Di Lucia's Fish & Chip Shop in a beautiful Seaside resort in Ireland called Kilkee. You bring back happy memories of the very early 60's.
Hello World I AM CLAUDE KING I AM STILL ALIVE> I have a NEW VERSION OF WOLVERTON MOUNTAIN ON AMAZON ON THE NEW ALBUM THE CAJUN COWBOY RIDES AGAIN JUST GOT BACK FROM NASHVILLE ON TH OPRY WITH BILL ANDERSON N GOOD TO BE ALIVE> HA HA I M 88 Y. O. Read about Me Texas Hot Country on line Back issue... Not bad singin .. Claude King
@claudekinge Glad to hear you're still going strong, Claude. It's an honour to hear from you. This was one of the songs I grew up with - always loved it.
@apmatadirolf Well, it's his song, and he was a professional. I can't expect to do it as well as Claude did it. I also loved his recording as a child.
Read the one below first! Anyway, I don't know if he ever found out the truth, but he had me sing it on 3 different occasions when I saw him at the boys' games. :-) I'm going to a little get together some older folks have over at the VFW every Thursday...live band. Only been once, back just before Christmas. They have a live band, mostly retired guys, but they can flat play anything. I sand "Folsom.." & "Blue Christmas," and got a rousing ovation.
My son played football and basketball with Bill, the younger brother of a kid (THEN!) here in Alabama, who was named for his well-known father & grandpa. I asked him if he'd ever heard the song, "Richmond Flowers." He said, "No , sir."
So I sang it for him inserting his name for Clifton's. He REALLY liked it. He was a senior in high school at the time and had signed to play football in the ACC...mighta been Duke.
That was just terrific, almost made my eyes water singing along with you. My favorite country song ever, in my opinion the new stuff just doesn't hold a candle to the classics. Thanks man, 5 stars all the way!
In the 1980s I saw a program on Wolverton Mountain, Clifton Clowers, and the song writer. I think I recorded it on VHS. I still have all my VHS from 1980, but can't find recording (yet). They interviewed all participates (together). Program brought the song to life.
Clifton Clowers actually had two daughters but they were both ugly as could be. So a friend who lived in the area says. He was a sawhand for a living.
Raymond, great rendition of this song. Just so you know, yes there really is a Woolverton Mountain, and yes, Clifton Clowers was real and he did have a "pretty young daughter." I grew up only a few miles from Woolverton Mountain. Have been on top of it many times. Mr Clowers is buried there where he spent most of his life.
All my songs have the writers' names in brackets. I think they should be given credit. Anyone familiar with my channel knows that the songs are sung by me or my friends, not by professional singers. Thanks for commenting.
