cucumbers, melons, squash that run can be trellised.
it is a good idea to trellis if you dont have a lot of space, because those plants run a long way and can also shade or smother other plants in the garden.
I saw a video where the guy stuck plastic forks handle down and tines up in the dirt to keep the cats out? I don't know if it worked, but it LOOKED ingenious!!
@CanadianPatriot1973 are the tomato leaves black or purple? If it's purple it could be because it was too cold for it at one point or phosphorus deficiency.
@haikuoflife well, considering our weather, and the lack of warming I would not be suprised in the least if it got to cold on more then 1 evening as for phosphorus can I over do it if I give them some and they dont need it? And yes, you are correct, it is more purple then black
@CanadianPatriot1973 Yep, I'm in Minnesota and have a few purple tomato plants myself. =) If you haven't had a soil analysis, I would stick to recommended directions. Bonemeal is something I like to use as it doesn't seem to have any negative effects on plant/soil.
Your cukes will vine as long as they are not bush style cukes. If you put something for them to grow up on, they can be trained upwards. They like that. You can also mulch with shredded newspaper, the worms love newspaper and cardboard. Your tomato stems that broke off can be rooted. Put them in some water for a day or two and then replant them after you take off the lower leaves. Tomatoes are weeds, they grow really easy.
The first flowers you see should be picked off. I know it hurts you to do that, but you will reap a better harvest down the road if you allow the plant do develop its root system for a little longer before you actually allow it to fruit. Same with the tomatoes. When the peppers start coming, pick they when they are small and later you will have nice large ones. I promise.
last tip for today!!!!
for tomato plants:
pinch and remove suckers that develop in the crotch joint of two branches. they take energy away from the rest of the plant.
suckers suck the energy the plant can use to make fruit and grow thicker.

if the plant breaks go ahead and clip it off. same if they turn yellow or brown.
