my mind is fucked up enough that this just hits the spot with everything in life, mind, emptiness, happiness, despair, and everything else under the fucking sun.
@seancaseyVEVO He isn't saying they don't, he is just saying you don't need them to feel the full power of this music. But let's stop lying to ourselves, we live to be high. Everything you do can be traced to finding some kind of intense, mind altering pleasure in the long run. No matter what your favorite poison is, I think anyone who isn't blind can agree that nobody likes to be sober.
Three friends and I drove to this show via LA. I expected it to be somewhat unnerving, but the enveloping sound was oceanic and the tuning forks were hypnotic. I sat close to the stage within some triangle of space, and I passed out at one point. I was enthralled to see Stapleton in the flesh. He signed my poster. The trip was actually a crazy guys' weekend. Today I listened to Homotopy to Marie in bed, and my jaw clenched and my arms tightened. I thought I was going to die. Such power.
@circycle Yeah on the surface Nurse with Wound may seem like he makes a lot of uncomfortable, scary music but a lot of it is just more dark. I like a lot of his dark ambient/ minimal organic sound pieces like you would find on Soliloquy For Lillith and some tracks on The Musty Odor of Pierced Rectums. I feel at home with them in a way.
Read Frank Zappa's bio - he seems to think (and says it often) That anything can be musical if perceived as such by a listener - oh yea, Frank Zappa knows a 'little' about music
Music is an art form whose medium is sound. Common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike), "(art) of the Muses."[1]
so perhaps, given that this meets that definition, it is your definition of music that is impaired.
I think I saw these guys in London in 1991 or thereabouts. They played at the same pub as my friends in the Sewdish band "Thy Steamroller". I talked to the singer after the show and I remember he was very nice. There is a slim chance that I'm mistaken though, because it either was NWW or they were doing an EP together with NWW. But the show certainly looked like this.
An armored mass of darkness fish approaching... I've never gotten to see NWW live, but this is exactly what I would expect. Is it supposed to be funny? Is it supposed to be scary? It's too beautiful and mysterious to really be either- just a huge, shapeless Dadaist sound contraption. Is this an actual Nurse track or just improvised?
People said the same thing about Stravinsky, about Ornette Coleman, about every unconventional artist or musical development since the big bang. Your dad probably said it about the fucking Beatles - or if he didn't, plenty of other people did.
Do you also go to art museums and stand in front of Rothko's paintings saying "my 2-yr-old could do better than this"?
1st time I heard their music in secondary school, it's ideal band for playing in gallery, at inauguration of any exhibition or sth, I see their concerts as happenings, like Einsturzende Neubatens'
I just want to know why everyone acts like music and drugs have to go together? IMO, if you sit here and actually listen, instead of thinking "oh this would be better on drugs" you might find that this is very trippy without them.
Fuck I've done every drug under the sun, and now that I'm sober I can hear music again. When you're tripping everything sounds good, so try it sober guys, guarantee it's possible to enjoy.. unless you really don't like it, then listen to something else.
I agree. Every time I hear the classic "What drugs were they on when they thought this up?!" I can't help but roll my eyes. Anyone who needs mind altering drugs to do (and enjoy) good creative projects is someone who doesn't have the mental ability to come up with them by himself.
@ZuuLSpAcEmAn Exactly. Good music is good always, whether you're tripping balls or having a coffee. That said, certain drugs and certain music go together like Adam and Eve under the Tree of Knowledge. Yum, mushrooms.
Can anyone tell me why they think this band is noteworthy, and what some of their best pieces are (opinions)? Also, I think, if I'm not mistaken there are no lyrics in their songs; and of course, i say this humbly and honestly because I would like to learn more about them and of course, great music doesn't need to have words.
This stands among the prime of genuine experimental music. 1998 was the first time I ever heard these guys...when someone put on their Sugar Fish Drink album in a large dark room. But really, that record was more like a living artistic entity than an album.
