I could tell she didn't like how those chords were going at that one strain, so she went back to make it sound good :D Awesome Job. Gonna buy her album "Something More"
What a talent. Listen people! You can listen just for the pure enjoyment of it. If you feel you have to be critical .... keep it to yourself! This is happy music and this girl is GREAT!
Oh the kid has talent! Wow. How wonderful to hear stride played by someone under 60. This music will never, ever die, because it's as if the piano were made for it. The golden era of music really was the first half of the 20th century. Way to go, Stephanie!
She sounds like a kid when you compare her playing to other stride players ... listen to the Basie's version ... or Garner's Honeysuckle Rose and you'll hear what stride means ...
@zviato .... nonsense , very litle stylistic difference in this piece from any number of other stride ers , inc fats h'self , if you listen . the version of this which i saw on the tube was too fast jumbled and past it ! !
@zviato .... nonsense , very litle stylistic difference in this piece from any number of other stride ers , inc fats himself , if you listen . and , the basie version of this which i saw on the tube was too fast jumbled and past it ! ! the garner version of honeysuckle rose is predominantly in his own style , with some fast stride sections thrown in .... or ?
People are going to hate me for saying this, but...its too perfect. Where's the soul? You can play anything key for key, note for note...but Jazz players infused part of their own soul to the piece. That's where I think she's lacking. No offense. She's got talent. I just don't feel it. Might as well listened to a piano roll.
@Chaosga firstly shes very young, its pretty normal and senseful to imitate and learn stuff carefully before developing your own style. and no, a player piano never could play like this..
@pearsnockie ... i'm really only an amateur critic with a bit of an ear but find this as clean and crisp an effortless a version as any on this site ! ! ! ps she maintains the 'cadence' better than most
I sat and listened to her playing different songs for an hour after hearing this!!! And also where can you get the piano sheet music for this song...I have looked everywhere and cannot find it?!?!
It's a Yamaha P22....it's a workhorse....and you can get one pretty reasonable, like I did, after recitals like this one. "Only played once" is how they're usually advertised.
hahamy main achilles heel is fast left hand stride and it makes me laugh to see where she is looking 90% of the time....at her left hand....there is hope for me yet!!!!
My channel is an archive of a century of pop music. 500 playlists covering 360 artists & every year since 1900, so this version is on my 1929 lists as well, the year Fats first recorded this himself!
Handful of Keys is one of my all time favorite songs...and I hate to admit that I'm a bit picky when it comes to hearing others outside of Waller. What a great version this is though! Very nicely done..Thanks so much for sharing!
I was just about to say the same thing. With those delicate fingers and hands she get clear and intense sounds. And the intensity of both hands is perfect. Just like Fats. Awesome. I can´t believe what im hearing.

Well done. I posted myself playing Handful of Keys a while ago and I am thrilled that someone your age has got the spirit and rhythm of this music. Great
ST plays this beautifully, but with a more antique ragtime rhythm, in places. That wasn't the point of the piece. Wish they had masterclasses on this material.
I agree. One of the things I love about her style is how she adds her own little twists to most of the tunes she plays to make them NOT just like the original. If she played note for note from the sheet music, someone would complain about that.
Love it.

@zviato Yeah, but that's because she wasn't much more than a kid at the time. Even Fats, Basie and Tatum had to start somewhere. Just wait....
