how do u have it set up so u can see smoke whenever you hit alt + a?

@johnnyrequest Are you sure you have the latest version of blender? And if you dk, when you have the emmiter and the domain all set up, be sure to jump back to frame 1

@johnnyrequest Hey there. Idk if thats your problem, but you have to wait few seconds until animations restarts from beggining.
