Garfield died due to one Dr. Bliss, summoned by Robert Lincoln, trying to achieve fame and fortune by healing the president. Unlike most European doctors the American medical profession laughed at the idea of invisible bugs and refused to follow antiseptic treatment. It was a waste of time in their opinion. No washing of hands, no masks, no gloves, just constant pocking at and into the open wound by unwashed finger on unsterilized probe. The profession realized afterwords how they had failed.
If he wasn't shot the invention of a metal dector to find the bullet in him would not have been needed.
This is like saying that it wasn't chopping of Marie Antoinette's head that killed her, it was lack of oxygen and blood flow that caused it.
Inventions aside, the bullet caused the death. The killers knew death would result which is why they shot him. They shot him to kill him. They didnt shoot him to make him healthier.
@MostMagnificentOne Garfield would have lived even with the bullet inside of him. There were many civil war veterans walking around with bullets in them, even in the brain. The President died of blood poison caused by the refusal of American doctors to follow antiseptic treatment as most European doctors did at the time.
Doctors killed George Washington, but James wouldnt have died if it were not for that gunshot. James G. was awesome though, he was a minister and wanted a debt free monetary system for the working class. A.L, J.G, W.M, and JFK were all against central banking which is in place today in the US since 1913. How wierd that all four of those presidents were killed.
@tylrjsph It was revealed though that Garfield had advanced heart disease. Perhaps he would have had a myocardial infarction during his first term even if he had not been shot.
You speak as if poor medical treatment was uncommon. The poor medical treatment only made Guiteau's bullets more deadly and unfixable. To call the treatment the cause of death is foolish. From a 2010 view, the infection killed him, but anybody who was shot would have been treated in that manor.
@Fonchman Antiseptic treatment was in common use in Europe at the time President Garfield was shot. American doctors refused to believe in invisible bugs. They laughed at the idea and called the task of washing hands, wearing masks and gloves, and using carbolic to clean the wound as time consuming.
There is nothing worse than someone dwelling in technical nonsense, that collateral issues killed Garfield...the bottom line CG shot Garfield, and but for his assassin Garfield would have served his term. A child trying to hard to revise history is like asking your dog his opinion of the stock market, both are annoying.
@CalArtGrl Right on, CalArtGrl, this is extremely absurd and disturbing. Guiteau ultimately was the guilty party, and it is ridiculous to claim otherwise.
@lwirbel It isn't ridiculous or absurd. Yes, Guiteau killed him. But had he been shot in the same way today, he would likely be alive due to the fact that back then for obvious reasons, they weren't as adept at handling such a serious medical problem. I think that was this person's point. Chill out man.
@EverlasingEgypt Oh, I'm chilled about it, and I agree the medical attention was terrible, misdiagnosis was inexcusable. But CalArtGrl made the point well, the video carried the elements of conspiratorial types of thinking, focusing on one set of facts to the exclusion of all others. That's what bothered me about the video, had the tone of someone today making a video about "9/11 Truth" or Project HAARP. Not that there aren't questions to be asked, just the conspiratorial manner of asking.
I remember that Andrew Johnson succeeded Lincoln in 1865, and Teddy Roosevelt succeeded Wm.McKinley in 1901, and Lyndon Johnson succeeded JFK in 1963 but who succeeded Garfield in 1881?
I cannot believe that out of 1338 views, you only have 3 comments and 6 ratings, and that your rating is only 3.5.
While what alokmahal said was true, that is not what you were talking about. Had he not been shot, he could have been infected by that doctor when he had some other illness. The story I heard is that the doctor had just been shoveling horse manure and he did not bother to wash his hands when he touched the open wound. THAT is what you were trying to say.
You are also very effectively pointing out that the metal detector did not work because of the metal springs in the new box springs.
First, you stated your case, and then you very effectly explained, and for that, I give you a 5 star rating. I am afraid it doesn't help much because of the rest of the prior ratings, but it's all I can give you.
The poor medical care and the metal detector malfunction are all factors in his death, but none of this would have happened were it not for the lead balls that went into his body. Giutteau is responsible for his murder, with or without the bad luck Garfield had afterwards. None the less, I'm impressed. Quite persuasive you are.

He would have recovered if modern medicine was available in 1880. The piece is very well researched.

@rmarkwallace If American doctors had follow antiseptic treatment as European doctors did instead of laughing at it, the President would have lived.
