i was 17 when I first tripped down the stairs to the Flamingo, my older sister Jan gave me directions. Sat with my girfriend, Myrna Samuals & listened to Tubby Hayes, even danced a little. Kept going till Georgie Fame turned up . Got marrried in 63 & all that music kind of tapered away. I'm 71 now . Loved that time , all the music & the Gals. Donimo, Roehampton.
sounds like parker in the carribean! lol! very ahrd to keep away from parker especially on alto sax as well as re defining be bop! very difficult not to sound like charlie parker.
Joe borrowed my copy of Melody Maker in which Bob Dawburn had just reviewed (very harshly) Joe's 'Abstract' LP. After reading it, Joe returned the MM and shrugged, 'He's not hearing it,' he said quietly. 'Yes', I replied, 'but a great number of us are, Joe.'
He was so far ahead of his time. There was no better jazz musiciain in London while he was playing. I am simply grateful I had the opportunity to hear his artistry so often.
i only really knew of bills music from the wonderful "red bird" album, sailing thro the island seas, gliding on his vibes...!roasting in his hot sun and wafted in the breeze.....
I was at the Flamingo, a magic place The couriers Tony Cromby Don Rendel , Jack Parnell Phil Seaman Don Weller, Suits made at Sam Arkus, Had some great times down the club.
On a mid-week night in the late 50s, Joe's quartet was booked together with the rock(ish) band that I was in in a dance hall over a cinema somewhere in South London. Together the 2 groups out-numbered the audience. Joe came and played piano with us!
Do you have the song called ''There's only one''? It goes like, ''there's only one of everything, no two things in life are the same, the flowers the trees the birds on wings...'' and so on. I love that song but I can't find it anywhere!
Great playing from the late Joe Harriott who was so ahead of his time and sadly paid the price - British jazz needs to be put out there!!...Thanks for sharing.

The best ever era for British Jazz....Tubby Hayes & Joe Harriott were more imaginative than many USA musicians at that time.
Their names should be synonymous with Parker & Stitt. Central London was alive with great music during those days.
Thank you for this wonderful video!

What wonderful memories evoked whilst
listening to The Tony Kinsey Quartet.
Hours spent in smoked filled Jazz Clubs.
Misspent youth I suppose but then that was the Fifties

@gordoncamp. Wonderful times at Sam Kruger's Flamingo club in Wardour Street.
Tony, Tubby Hayes and loads of other super Modern Jazz men.
Then over to the Curry Centre in Gerrade Street.
