  • Ive had my MDS 58 for around 10 years now and have run it a few times but thats it... Never flown ... However I have just bench tuned it and it now runs fantastic so its going in the Koyosho Cap232 that I also bought at the same time as the engine and its going for its very very late maiden in a few days ... Hope its almost as powerful as yours Bruce ...... Why so long waiting for a maiden..... Confidence and playing around with planes like the AXN which just make flying way too much fun ...;o)

  • i have an MDS .28 Marine engine and i have been running it for more than 5 years...my friend has a PRO21M thunder tiger in the same boat and i can pass him with my half throttle :)

  • @dsldrvr69 It's a very powerful engine -- but there have been some design trade-offs to get all that power and the main one is that the crankshaft is pretty weak (a very large gas-passage down the middle makes the walls too thin). I ran a heavy prop on it and the crankshaft broke. Stick to a lightweight wooden prop though and it would be fine. I may buy another.

  • I've heard many differing tales with the MDS brand. I have a .68 PRO in a Goldberg Tiger 60 I built almost 15 years ago, and that engine starts every time with very few needle adjustments in that time.....still. The thing won't quit, and is still extremely reliable. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

  • Here in the UK, Ripmax inflicted the horrible MDS engines on unsuspecting British modellers. Sadly, it was mainly new flyers who bore the brunt of the MDS legendary unreliability in trainer packages - must have put thousands of potential modellers off. Just a few of the jokes.... what does MDS stand for? Many Dead Sticks....Most Don't Start........... what's the difference between an MDS and a door stop? .... you mean there's a difference?? I think Ripmax have dropped them now.

  • That engine performs great and a great pilot to top it off. I just brought a MDS 10 glow engine for £8.02 do you think that was a good deal?

  • @vanepico Nah, we've got lots of different planes, it's just that in the "fun per dollar spent" area, it's hard to beat an overpowered trainer. Check my channel for lots of jet-action, 3D profiles, Mustang P51D, electrics, DLG, etc.

  • @xjet Haha never had a nitro trainer, learnt on electric park flyers, I do have an MDS though which seems to be a very nice engines and has survived a previous life in a trainer with purely cosmetic damage :)

  • hi there totaly random question really but have you any idea how or what paint to use to respray a nitro plane as i wanna respray mine but it has that plastic covering shit on it. now i can fly my plane perfectly i want to start making it look nice :) thanks

  • @3halljo You would have to strip off the plastic covering then apply a few coats of sanding sealer or grainfiller (sanding after each coat) then a final application of a suitable (fuel-proof) paint. I've done it before but it can be a slow and messy job. The results are worth it though because you don't have to worry about that film peeling off again.

  • @xjet haha yeah and thanks for the quick response i can now fly my trainer perfectly and i want to repaint over all the bad landing marks and messes and put stickers and stuff over the dints haha:)

  • @3halljo For a trainer I'd go with a 12x4 prop. It'll give you lots of thrust without making the plane too fast.

  • I don't think they make these any longer. They were the original AT40 design, built with good strong balsa (and plenty of it). The new ones are all lightweight laser-cut ply and far more fragile. The fact that mine's still flying after more than six years is testament to the strength and durability of these older versions

  • I have the black head one the rpm in the book says 15,000. Max The earlier ones like the one in the video have smaller diameter cranks the black head one that I have ran crap below full throttle but it is the carbs that are rubbish the later MDS engines have C2 carbs supposed to be better but justengines have a direct replacement TN2 carb that works great.

    The recomended prrops are 11x7 11x8 11x9. I run a model technics F5 plug and Supaglow 10% got a supertiger carb on mine but not tried it yet

  • Hehe that was awesome, my crappy flying with my trainer isnt close to this, but your engine is moore powerful than mine thou. I still need to speed it up alot, just so afraid to loose it, i really dont trust in FM radios. So iam waiting for a second 2,4ghz reciever for my transmitter. Nice video. i have spent so much cash on bad models and electronic equipment. lesson learnt there! //Regards

  • i have an Old 2 piece crankcase MDS 61 Black head ,side exhaust in my P47 Thunderbolt 56 Inch Wingspan and i love it sometimes a bit tricky to tune but still a very good motor. Sorry xjet i dont think ill be buying the MAC MDS 61 unless i make my own crank for it. wooden props not for me!When i was in England many years ago i saw a MDS 61 Rear exhaust with pipe but did not buy it pity would of been a good motor i think...Good luck if buy another MAC MDS 61 let us know how you get on...

  • I had just similar MDS engine in my Aquabird and it was no goog at all. Even with OS 61 carburettor! I think the engine was ment to boat racing.

  • The most amazing thing about that engine is that it was still running when you landed. MDS engines aren't known as More Dead Sticks for nothing LOL. At least you had a bit of fun with it.

    I don't recall those rear exhaust ones were ever sold in the UK.

  • As I said in the updated description.. the engine failed in-flight with a broken crankshaft. Ah well, I still got more than $49 worth of fun out of it while it lasted and it's not like I treated it with kid-gloves.

    Will I buy another? Well I'm tempted but if I do I'll only use lightweight wooden props on it so as to reduce the stress on the crankshaft.

  • Yeah, still running in and that plug was actually a bit cold. Hadn't even touched the low-end needle at the time the video was taken.

    I just finished cleaning mine up and will bolt it to something sometime soon. I've had it for about 15 years so it's definitely time. Used to get 'em from Ukraine for about $40 a pop.
