  • Completely agree with those who recommend Manassas. Definitely a great body of music.

  • thanks for upload

  • Thanks for posting Manassas!!!!!! For those not familiar with Manassass, it is by far the best album Stephen Stills ever put together. In my top ten for sure! This album has blues, rock, bluegrass....there is something for everyone to enjoy!!

  • Live rhythm.

  • Where hasn't Chris Hillman been???

  • Real nice vocal blend between Stephen and Chris. Sweet, sweet song. I think Stephen Stills never really got the credit due as both a songwriter/singer and multi -instrumentalist. Talented man indeed.

  • @cottageorgan why he didnt get the credit ?? drugs ?

  • Thank you for posting. I've been waiting for this one very long.

  • Awesome load, thanks

  • wow

this is a song that is hard to find - magic

  • He is just great. End of conversation.

  • One of my favorites also!!!

  • Stills is great just on his own, other bands don't do him justice, one of the many reasons the Springfield never worked out as great of a band as it was

  • Mannassas was like a combination of The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Flying Burrito Brothers, CS&N, CSN&Y, and....Santana?

  • Great Song! I love the Dan Fogelberg version off of his Exiles album too.

  • stills is one of the all time greats come BACK steve one day at a time

  • 当時のアメリカン・ロックの腕利き、生え抜きの集団・・マナサス・ロックの偉大な仕掛け人スティヴン・スティルスのナイス・ナンバー"IT DOESN'T MATTER"

  • More cowbell.

  • What a band Stills gathered for this magnificent album,

    congrats for the uploads

    gus : ) ♪

  • One of my all time favorite songs.

  • @buddyrichjunier

stole? Chris Hillman, the co-writer plays in both of these bands.

  • "If you're still listening, I hope you remember

the kid with the big white guitar

and all the sad stories to tell . . . "

It's so great to see this video - have loved this music for years

  • what's with the huge F hole guitars? somebody run a sale?

  • the manassas tour and recordings cost stephen stills millions.

    thank you stephen.

  • still's fourth super session group. 'nuff said.

when i first heard this i was 17 and amazed at what had to be still's or hillman's slide work.

turns out it was al perkins making that sound. manassas' anchor.

i have met paul harris (keyboards) who passed by my room at a boarding house in miami and heard me playing the first manassas album.

he knocked politely and when i opened the door he said something like

"i haven't listened to this in years. i forgot how good it was doing it."

  • Damn goose bumps...I thought I was only who knew this music then.....the toms, steal, and cymbals made there sound....I can play this album and people say what?......I frik'n love it!.....whole album is excellent.

  • Those are some of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen.

  • So cool seeing Chris Hillman in this. Almost forgot about him.

  • Who played the petal steel in this video ?!

  • @Tekton62 I think it's Al Perkins

  • @Tekton62 It was for sure Al Perkins from Fabens, Texas. I knew him from El Paso--now I live in Tampa and Joe Lala from here is a friend, also.

  • this band was so unheard of and underated during the early '70s. I've got their first disc and it's a real "jam" band. Dallas Taylor was such a great drummer.

  • This song, this song is born for being played in your convertible, must be that fantastic pedal steel guitar!

  • Steven Stills, A very underated Guitar Player !

  • You are so right. (and no pickguard on either of them, either!)

  • greg brady on percussion

  • @unitedempyreloyalist wrong....that's Joe Lala....

  • Just when I thought I had heard it all, I find this gem. I feel enlightened and simultaneously humbled.

  • Lyle Lovett's Big Band was a BIG SUCKIE....DO NOT dare to compare that panty-waist to the under-rated talent of Stephen Stills.

  • Yes, the record companies had a great influence. Even today, keeping a big band like that together is difficult (example, Lyle Lovett's Big Band). When it happens, it is awesome and unforgettable--I saw Manassas in 1972, the year I graduated high school, and it had a tremendous influence on my musical career, just as the Sweetheart of the Rodeo Byrds album did. Chris is still touring with Herb Pedersen, if you can see them, he sings better than EVER.

  • don't forget the horrible civil war battle there our country would not survive, otherwise.

  • GREAT POST! GREAT DVD!

  • Terrific song, awesome band. I was fortunate enough to have seen them in person back n the 1970s.

  • Stills was knocking them out of the park almost monthly from '67 to '73. An astonishing songwriter regardless of who he was working with. "IIIIIIIII've got nothin'... to do but today-yeah..."

  • One of the best albums ever!

  • You guys know rhiannon from Fleetwood mac, same guitar part or close...

  • @AlexBkatzmann except this pre-dated Rhiannon by more than 10 years.....

  • oooops

  • What an incredible album!!!!!!!!!!....sorry...but did they do more than one?.......Every song was so incredible on whole album....Memories abound!.....I didn't realize so many talented to create this work and album.....ohh double set?...still get on cd?.....I play some and cool to play bass to.....check out mics ..very cool....

  • @Highpinesnow

I've been a Stills fan since 7th grade and I believe that Manassas was his best 'group' effort. As others have said, the record companies wanted CSN/Y. My friends and I used to show up at Stills' concerts in the 80s just to see if Neil Young or Chris Hillman might show up.

I believe Manassas released 2 albums. An outtakes cd was released a couple of years ago.

  • What an incredible album!!!!!!!!!!....sorry...but did they do more than one?.......Every song was so incredible on whole album.........I didn't realize so many to create this album.....ohh double set?

  • What an incredible album!!!!!!!!!!....sorry but was there more than one?

  • That's Chris Hillman Dana Carvey's real daddy!

  • Come On Justin Bieber, one more try !!!

  • Stephen Stills & a White Falcon..... COOL Incarnate

  • still (s) beautiful music

  • I just bought some Manassas today... The music still stands up...

  • @waltbscott

Couldn't agree more... still-great tunes from one of the best double albums released during that time in my opinion. I never got to see this band so this video is real special. Thanks!!

  • Thank you ever so much for posting this. Loved that album and now with the visual it is an amazing thing. Firefall redid this tune, but with totally different lyrics. A great song however, is a great song; it shines with both renditions.

  • Is that Dana Carvey singing back-up vocals?

  • This one is good as the one by Firefall!

  • The guitars are bigger than the guitar players.

  • Outstanding.

  • if we had their hair stylist, we'd still be touring.

  • Manassas has to be the most underrated bands of all time. One of my favorite bands ever,Stills is the man,Al Perkins wasn't bullshittin,Joe Lala,Fuzzy SAmuels, damn what a band

  • Manassas is one of my all time favorite albums. Still listen today and always so good and fresh. Rarely does a double album ROCK all the way through but this one certainly does. A true favorite of mine and all my friends when we were teens.

Thanks for posting. I have the DVD as well which is awesome.

  • AWESOME!!! Thank you for this post. Manassas was so terrific. This is a great live version of this wonderful song.

  • One of the top bands of the 70's that never got the recognition they richly deserved. Stephen Stills you are the best!

  • The best album of the early 70's. That is by a long chalk. So many facets, Stills and Hillman. Fantastic.

  • great band

  • Incredible band. Imagine Hillman in the back seat. Under the circomstances it wasn't odd at all, with Stills at his peak.

  • STILLS WAS SO MUCH A PART OF MY MUSIC SCENE-THIS WAS HIS BEST ENSEMBLE! GREAT VIDEO!

  • Nassaw Collisium in NY years ago - WE KNEW

  • takes me back!

  • He was so beautiful here in this time, wasn't he.

  • it's STILL a joke of history that stephen STILLS is in a way the most underrated memer of CSNY for most people. but listen to his voice!!!!!!!

  • thier dbl album is one the most under rated albums of the time , great players up and down

  • Saw them in Concert in Lexington Ky. One of the best shows I ever saw

  • Most underrated band of all; they really made great music.

  • The first Manassa LP is my favorite work by Stills -- just so underrated. Not sure you can totally blame a record company for the lack of success. The follow up was a dud and it seems there were some, uh, distractions....

  • Excellent stuff - great seeing Stills with Hillman and those other fellas!

  • i cannot find the second album.

  • No way! this is epic

  • The whole Byrds & Buffalo interplay of '68-'73 was =sooo= tasty.

  • Ah, the 70s...over-long sideburns and white man 'fros!

  • this is so neat and clear did you did some fixing cause the other's like this one arent as quite clear, yeah

    later

  • Darn Stephen, his coolness is in hes DNA.

  • Man asses?

  • #OMG I haven't heard this song forever ! I love this. Thanks. x

  • people don't forget steve stills as a great guitarist - let alone a composer.

  • i can't believe i'm the first comment on this tune... i thought everyone knew this great tune.... oh well its just you and me gary and steve

  • @patroc58 ...well as i'm a little bit higher than i thought.. i'm NOT the only one ...sorry to gary and steve

  • @patroc58 - yes, this is a great tune. there are over a years worth of comments posted on this video. people seem to really dig it. have a great day!

  • Agree with Chrisdrumz. Great and sadly short lived 70's band

  • looks like greg brady on the conca's

  • To be historically accurate, Rick Roberts wrote this song originally and with the original (Firefall) lyrics. Chris Hillman had brought Roberts into the Flying Burrito Brothers which was just in the process of breaking up when Stills was putting Manassas together. Stills wanted Hillman in the band and Hillman brought Roberts along to sit in on some early sessions. Stills passed on Roberts being in Manassas, but liked the song, wasn't crazy about the lyrics and substituted his own words.

  • Wonder what a CSN cover of this song would have actually sounded like? I did like this song even if there's no sign of Nash here.

  • I came across this video a while ago . . . it just reminds me of what a great era of music I grew up in . . . live music that sounded great . . . CSN&Y . . . together, with others or solo were just amazing to see and hear . . .

  • Rick Roberts wrote the new words that he sang with Firefall, This is a Hillam/Stills song in this, the original version. it was the first single off of MANASSAS debut album. I also saw the H'Bowl show and confirm halbie's memory... it was my first concert EVER!

  • Good song!

  • Magic

  • sweet music

  • I saw Stills with Manassas , what a friggen great show that was

  • Saw them perform this song at the Hollywood Bowl in the early 1970's Someone in the audience yelled "Bluebird" (Buffalo Springfield Song) Stephen Stills replied "Bluebird done flew the coup"

  • Love the pedal player Al Perkins, saw him in Mike Nesmiths band around 1978 in Melbourne Australia ,He is also a fine country Tele exponent Thanks

  • Love this song...Question does anyone think this was Stills competing with N Young's Crazy Horse band? Another question Why are some of the Firefall songs produced by Even Steven music? Just asking if anyone knows.

  • A song on one of their albums was called Even Steven. That might be why, but I'm not sure.

  • Rick Roberts co-wrote this song and would be one of the founders of Firefall. I believe he was in Manassas also, so since he knew Stephen Stills that's probably where the connection is with Even Steven producing some Firefall songs. I think some other comments mentioned Chris Hillman as a co-author of the song, and Roberts and Hillman were both in the Flying Burrito Brothers.

  • @Raxman263

Yeah, the fierce competition was evident even on the cover of B. Springfield albums.

The sad point is Stills and Young competing turned to anger and the destruction of B. Springfield's great future.

Even the tour to promote, "Long May You Run," in '75 or '76, fell apart due to their differences/competition.

And the fact that neither Young or Stills has 2 songs back to back on the album may be the epitome of competition.

Seems they've mended some fences of late.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • This definitely looks like it is from our BeatClub here in Germany (so we are no that dumb after all). Great, great show. Most of the bands played live in the studio.

  • Yes, This is Radio Bremen's Beatclub. I recorded this special on VHS myself several years ago from NDR fernsehen.

  • There are 3 versions of this song. This one by Mamasses. One by Firefall and one by Dan Fogelberg. and all 3 the lyrics are different but the music is similar although not the same. And like i have stated before Joe LaLa appears on all 3 versions.

  • Great song, great band and very underated. There's so much essence of The Byrds, Burrito Bros, CSN, Buffalo Springfield but moving along with the sounds of the time. love the Hillman/ Stills partnership. not quite Gram and Hillman but it's different and as i said before.. underated!

  • Saw them the same year at the Rah? In Amsterdam. The most underated band of the 1970's.

  • France, 1977. An American in Paris. One more "chanson" by Charles Aznavour on the radio and my head's going to explode! Then I hear this-- Armed Forces Radio, perhaps?-- and I smiling. Love this song then, love it now.

  • @expenguin67

Wow thats an experience there my friend, thanks for sharing, never been to France but it must be real cool hearing this one all of a sudden over there back in the great seventies. Great song great album.

    thanks

  • Thanks for that, oneputtchris. Wouldn't surprise me. Stills never struck me as modest, even though I love his stuff.

  • Stephen Stills is a great songwriter, singer, and player. There are precious few who do all three as well.

  • @Yearst

Actually, this song was originally written by Chris Hillman and Rick Roberts (Firefall). It was reworked by Stills and claimed he wrote it with Hillman.... this is a fact. I know all 3 of them and when Hillman performs 'it doesn't matter', he will give Rick Roberts credit.

  • @oneputtchris

So glad you set the record straight - credit should be given where it's deserved!

I've always enjoyed Firefall's version too ( different lyrics)! But, of course you knew that!

  • Great stuff, really love the White Falcons.

  • Didn't matter how great Manassas was(and they certainly were GREAT),all the record company wanted was CSNY. A fantastic rock band that could have been so much more. It's a shame really.

  • . . . just perfect !!!

  • CANCION DE 1972 DE SU ALBUM MANASSAS

  • Joe Lala played on all 3 versions of this song.

  • One of Stills' hits w/o Crosby & Nash -I really liked it when it first came out & still do, has a haunting quality about it..

  • firefall version better

  • I like both versions. I don't think one is better than the other. Just different!

  • Chris Hillman I would at any time say YES XXX

  • I don't blame you ... and I straight .. hahaha. l almost met him beck in 1994 ... working on a documentary ... but a bad ass flu ... love his work ...

  • anyone have the song titled right now?

  • Thanks for this !!!

  • anything from rosevelt raceway some good stuff

  • Very nice, so soothing to the mind & soul. XXO

  • yeah!!! that's nice yes (alright)

  • Try to listen to Firefall's version of this song, G.

  • Firefall was ok, their version wasn't as melodic and smooth.

  • actaully the firefall version had better lead guitar...really intense and haunting...very cool...

  • ... ah. good memories... the BEST song on the album. Period.

  • Great stuff.Takes me back to college in the early 70's It's too bad these guys didn't do more-so much talent in one band.

  • Stephen can play with anyone

  • Is a Dan Fogelberg song??

  • Nope, Chris Hillman basically.

  • Ah, the Kid with the big white guitar.

  • chris hillman - one of the greats. met him at a mexican restaurant in toluca lake a few years back. very nice guy.

  • I always liked this song by Manassas. They could have turned up the vocals however.

  • Joe Lala ---great percussionist. Not as good as Dr. J, but still excellent

  • Love the Hammond B-3 with the Rhodes Elect. Piano on top. Great combo of keyboards then..and still today.

  • timeless, a masterpeace, an obvious remark.

  • SO very good !

  • nice!

  • Bit of the `Gordon Huntleys `about Al's playing here.

  • Absolutamente maravilloso,qué grupos los de entonces...eso sí que eran canciones!!

  • I don't think this version is so sloppy. It sounds like a good live take. I actually like this version a bit better than the recorded version, which seems to lack a bit of energy.

  • Sloppy as all hell but nonetheless good songs. The studio recordings were great. Of course, Hillman went on to do great things. Hillman was the quiet one in the Byrds. Now, the Byrds had some cool talent too. Buffalo Sprinfield, The Hollys, Byrds, Mannassas and Poco were a fabulous wonderful mixture of classic folk rock. I'm not forgetting the Eagles and Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell. Wow.....shows my age. Peace
  • Boy does this take me back. I went to see them at Boston Garden and the sound guy saw my girlfriend and I at the end of night and before I knew it I was on a plane to NY for the next show! A few months later she and I hitched to Colorado to hang out with them. It was a wild exerience. I fell for Bruce Berry thier roady, it was the first real tradgedy I ever experienced. I loved Fuzzy and Joe Lala they were great, and Chris was very gentle. Steven...not enough room here! Al Perkins still great!

  • Stills and Hillman Awesome. Grew up in Manassas, VA in the 70's. great stuff, THX

  • I saw this band in Frankfurt Germany in 1972. I was able to take some awesome pictures of the show that have reminded me of the tightness of this great band.

Now I have deja vu all over again thanks to this being posted. Great job.

  • STILLS!! the best. the kid with the big white guitar.

  • great song and album

  • THis is from BEat-CLub in Germany, I believe.

  • anyone have their song right now?

  • magic...really magic!!!

what kind of tv show was it? in 1972?

Stills was at the top with Manassas. All the musicians around him were so good & groovy!!!!

  • I believe that it was a show called the "Midnight Special" which was on late nights on Fridays. It was the first televised venue for rock that had sound engineers that knew how to properly mic and mix the sound of rock bands. It wss like going to a live concert, only televised.

  • After I wrote the below comment, I noticed the description as being a European TV show. Somehow, I remember seeing this band on "Midnight Special" though. Either way, the sound of the music was great for the first time on television.

  • thanx for your answer & your precision Singinjohnny.

great tv show, with a groovy sound.

  • Fantastic live footage of a GREAT SONG.

Mr. Stills had that White Falcon flying.

They don't call it classic for nothin'.

Truley love this song...play it all the time!!

  • I was having trouble figuring out if those guitars were White Falcons or Country Gentlemans. The tail pieces were wrong for what I could find on the WF and both guitars had the pick guards removed. The headstocks were both WFs though.

  • manassas and the 1st stills album are his peak- thanks for posting!

  • Rowan atkinson on the drums...

  • That's funny....you probably know it's Dallas Taylor

  • this album was recorded along with derek and the dominoes Layla right down the street from me Critera Studios, down here in Miami, I drive by there all the time and just feel the magic just driving by the place

  • Damn this is good! Bought the album when it was released-wish I still had it. Happy days so long ago.

  • Stephen Stills must have grown bald around the age of 10

  • Latin percussion, country/western steel guitar, a bossa nova rhythm, beautiful lyrics= GENIUS!

  • I saw Manassas perform Side 1 of the two album set nonstop, live in 1972. Awesome, they did not miss a lick. This was a highlight of Stills' career, and the first band where Hillman really stepped out front, where he belongs. He is rock solid (in temperament and musicianship).
