  • whats this siren called

  • Listen carefully from 4:00 sounds like a wee bit of chafing going on in that rotor housing...

  • cool

  • FLOOD sirens providing an early warning system for coastal residents will be scrapped, it has been confirmed.

Essex County Council branded the system, which cost more than £16,000 a year to run, out of date.

There are 36 flood sirens across the county, including in West Mersea, Brightlingsea, Wivenhoe and Jaywick.

  • What's the name of these sirens?

  • @PascalR95 it looks like a Castle Casting siren.

  • @PascalR95 civil defense siren, air raid siren (check wiki)

  • We really need to bring these back widespread. SMS and Internet warning are simply not enough. The generation from the Cold War who knows the signals are still around so it wont take to long for the public to know about ciivil defense prcedures.

Plus im sure they're wuite cheap to make and sureley our new systems will be safer than EMP than the old phone wire systems.

  • This is what you're going to hear in 2012.

  • @Nihil2005 are you crazy 2012 isnt true you silly

  • I wont one

  • apocalpyse!!!

  • Please Get Your Facts Right. We Were Not In The Cold War, That Was USA. These Were Air Raid Sirens From WWII

  • Could anyone tell me if they know of any of these or gents of leicester sirens still up in and around london? i want to restore one but i cant find one for the life of me and im not sure if the councils want to reply regarding this lol.

  • @azz16901 yes, theres two well known ones. One on a bridge near waterloo station, one in queensway just at the end of the broad walk in hyde park and theres still a working one by battersea gasometer in case of a gas leak.

  • @glitch4465 yes mate, ive seen the one on waterloo bridge but when i went back there last week it had been taken down, Ive kicked myself for leaving that disappear haha, but i havent seen this one in hyde park. I shall contact the council and see what they say, hopefully it isnt listed. Thanks matey

  • @azz16901 No, the one in waterloo is still there by the way..you looking in the right place? they proberbly won't remove it. But when theres enginerring works on the bridge, scaffolding had to be put around it. (google earth street view)

  • @glitch4465 ah ok, i guess i couldnt see it as they were doing biulding work around there, the council havent said no, they just dont know who is responsible for it lol, might as well just take it

  • Does anyone know what happed to the siren on five mile drive in Oxford?

  • use that on april fools day and say its not a test best prank ever

  • wait, Essex? what state? Maryland??

  • @LaineClarkJr essex is in england mate not us

  • @LaineClarkJr essex in england. its a county.

  • if this came on i would run a mile to the other side of the world!

  • duck, cover and kiss ur ass goodbye

  • @Valkyriepure that scared me

  • very funny hootergirlsrhot

  • Where is the exact position of this siren?

  • Flood siren test?

    ...

    Yep. It works.

  • Is this the flood warning pattern? Nuclear attack was 8,4 second blasts every 4 seconds.

  • @SuperWarriormonk in the war the siren when in attack was think 5 seconds on and 6 seconds off

  • During the Cold war it was 8, 4 second blasts with 4 seconds between each blast.Cant remember what the fallout was, but the all clear was a 30 second blast. The attack pattern would probably be the last thing we ever heard. ;)

  • sounds like my wife

  • @hootergirlsrhot: comment of the day !

  • nice

  • @hootergirlsrhot LMFAO

  • @hootergirlsrhot Yeah, especially when she sees what your YouTube account name is!

  • @dockwellian45 yea hopefully, don't tell her

  • And I quote, "Sorry about the terrible all over the place footage, having to cover my ears, and record at the same time is difficult! "

    Read the description.

  • probobly the loud sound shaking the camera and pretty much everything else

  • @Mr70dodgechallenger i think you mistake me as an illiterate cunt who can't read, allow me to correct you Mr red leaf. I can establish this is an air raid siren, as i live in the neighbouring town called Basildon, my question was why he was shaking like a dog having a shit, not what the noise was, so now i'll lower myself to your level ummm....duh? does that make me cool now can i hang wit you!

  • @Mr70dodgechallenger F-A-G-G-O-T

  • @Mr70dodgechallenger MANGINA!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @Mr70dodgechallenger yo daniel, U HAVE A MANGINA!! Its too bad you escaped pig slaughter from ur stupidity.

  • Comment removed

  • @Mr70dodgechallenger well, its time for me to scoot, troll your gay ass later

  • Wow, that's an image-provoking siren. ON the wind-down, it sounds very much like a Federal 2/3T22. I wonder if it uses the same sort of chopper ports.

  • The Federal sounds like a tree chipper. This video, (Castle Castings) is the original wwII sound, which is very melodic and legendary.

  • @seawind0721 i saw one at a junck yard i think it has 10/12 prots but this was ages ago but i think yes it is the same as the 3/2T22 =)

  • that siren reminds me of another one

  • It s like in Shilent Hill O.O

  • It's funny how every siren is like silent fucking hill init?

  • Where do you think the game got the idea to use the siren OldMan?

  • Where in essex is that ????

  • Thats a very impressive siren!

  • ouch, when i go siren stalking, i wear ear muffs, bose earmuffs

  • silent hill

  • that movie is crepy

  • They have one of these in Grays, Essex and it shit the life out of me when I first heard it as I wasn't expecting it at all.

  • we have these sirens in Great Yarmouth,! always makes me laugh and is kind of scary actually

  • very nice sound!

  • What are the local people advised to do when this sounds for real- i.e. how long have they got and how far do they need to flee?! Is it just a matter of climbing up the bank that the siren's on to get out of danger. Or has it never happened (hopefully)

  • we have a set of original ww2 castle castings down the road from my house that they are testing tomorow and they too are now part of a flood warning sytem i cant wait to hear them and watch all the old people running out of their houses yelling " the nazis are here, theyre comming to bomb us" and thats how i imagine tomorow going

  • wow

  • Nice video Danwisbey85 would you be able to record this siren again please. If you do could you also record the full wind down to.

  • essex--is that england? what levees do you got in england that might fail didnt know GB was flood prone - that is obnoxious how much they are running the siren - wearing it out!!

  • did u have a tripod in your house?

    its useful

    nice video

  • What is that? What for?

  • its a castel cadtings siren...and its for floods, judging by the title :P

  • Oh, I see.

That so strange because I never seen this before. So, that interesting lol

    Thanks for info, Cheetawolf!

  • Yup it's a castle castings siren back from the Cold War.

  • Ah, that's nice one!

Cold War? Like World War 1 or World War 2 or another something else?

  • Cold war = russians and america threatening to nuke the hell out of each other, to say it short.

  • Ah, thanks for info!

    That's cool

  • i noticed these old world war 2 sirens don't have any warning stickers i know they have the company sticker logo on it all of our sirens in the United States have stickers and name plates on the siren it self like federal signal and other companies in the US.

  • Oh, they have it on a tiny little plate for some reason

  • right i know Essex is in England am i right?

  • Correct. Essex is a county in England.

  • how far are you from the Thames river?

do you have any favorite British comedy shows?

  • 5 or 10mins away. There are not even sirens by the riverfront here.

  • I don't have to worry about river flooding .

  • next to the tbolt and 3T22, this siren has the best sound ever!

  • they allows these things so close to homes knowing how loud they are?

  • they got to say stop it before they call the police

  • that poor guy who lives next to it

  • i have a head ache! man these things are loud my speakers are cracking now

  • wow, this thing really goes off for a while doesnt it! I love the sound! very pure.

  • This should be avaliable as a ringtone!

  • I don't suppose you realise this but when the siren cut out... all the old people thought the Germans were invading again!

  • LOL im german and it hurts in my heart what you said

  • reflecting back on a cold history, not ment to be judging any germans nowdays. sowwie

  • it hurts when people think we germans would do such shit again

  • Most people don't think you would, its just now that its over we should be able to have a laugh about some things. without poking fingers. It hurts when people say the Cornish never took part and were cowards, a disgrce to England. And it hurts that they all us a disgrace to England because I'm somone who beleives I'm not English and just Cornish. Your not the only place that gets put in the firing line of critism like that, but when its said its not ment to be offensive. If you get me?

  • yep

  • LOL!

  • Yeah, our dogs howl when it goes off. xD

  • ear plugs are a man's best friend (the french have ones that have a nrr of 80db, add that to some nrr 30db, and you could put up a fight with that thing. i would not want to live in the house right next to it.

  • Are my eardrums playing tricks on me? Or is that the unmistakeable sound of a Courtland 26c RATOUT?

If someone could confirm this for me I would very much appreciate it.

    Boris

  • I remember this back in the 70's. Our dogs went berserk over this.

  • sounds like the bearing are moving thay should fiks that

  • nice sounding siren

  • Imagine a bird sitting on the top of that thing when it first turned on.

  • @PlanesTrainsAutos chopped plover

  • Awesome video, man. I like air raid sirens!

  • awesome five stars!!!!!

thank you for shareing this is

    going straight to my top

    favorites list.

  • scary sound.thought the speakers in my laptop were gonna blow!

  • At 4:32, I would RUN if that son of a bitch came on again with you that close to it!

  • lol

  • I would have hearing protection on if i was you.

  • the air raid siren dose 10'000 rpm

  • the UK tests? or US

  • do you know when the 2008 tests will be?

  • So if these flood sirens sound, do you automatically have to assume it means "evacuate"?

  • how many rpms do those spin at

  • normaly around 7,000 RPM and thats why the warning labels say DANGER AMPUTATION at least the castle casting brand ones do

  • i have seen some sirens with the warning label as well saying DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE, WARNING WEAR EAR PROTECTION in the United States.

  • Yep. Most ASC sirens say that.

  • almost all American Signal sirens say it too.

  • y would u want a siren for floods? its not like they come in where one has to take immidiate cover like a tornado.

  • because essex is a really flat county in the UK so floods can come in really fast.

  • Agreed. I used to live in a flood prone area in the US and if it rained hard enough, one minute the ground would be next and the next we would have 2 feet of water.

  • lived in Essex from 18 month till 19 now live in Lincolnshire but Ive never heard one of these go off!

  • the siren is at the docks mate so if you live near there you will hear it trust i have heard it bout 4-5 times now laters

  • brings back memories of my childhood. there used one of these sirens in a hospital down the road from me but its closed now so ive not heard it in years. you can hear these things for miles. great noise.

  • They now in my town in Lincolnshire, seem to go everytime it rains.. Not complaining, I loveeeee the sound!

  • i remember in holland we had those thing i think there are still a few but since the 90 i havnt heard thm any more

  • I never knew they made Flood Sirens. I now realize why its perched up kinda high...

  • it is a scary sound when you hear it i worked in a hospital near an oil terminal and we used to have to take part in the drills we were that close to the site heaven knows what we would have done in an actual emergency

  • yes yes, here we go

  • You don't hear many of these boys anymore!

There was one at AH Marks chemical works near my house once upon a time. I think they've removed/replaced it now because I haven't heard it for ages. You used to be able to see the siren mounted on top of one of the administration blocks but they've since built another building in front of it.

  • Looks like its in good shape. The wind down sounded exactly like a Federal Signal 2T22 or a 3T22.

  • Yeah it did and so does the wind up.

    Overall it sounds a lot like a 2T22 or a 3T22

  • In speaking about the 3t22 we have a3t22 that we use in tornado warnings and fire calls too it is now mostly used in tornado warnings

  • "This is the emergancy broadcasting system, this is not a test, all citizens are urged to seek shelter immedately.."

If I heard the sirens in our town go off I'd freak out significantly and try and find a cellar somewhere :P

  • I reckon they should have those things in Bristol, never mind Essex....

  • Why Bristol

    From st george myself

  • we had one of these carton nelson sirens for our alert system when our fire pagers failed us back in australia. it would probably go off about 9 times a week and i loved it every time, our wail didnt last quiet as long as this one though,

  • That siren sounds great that would get your attention

  • The Siren in this video is a 80's Castle Castings Siren. Same specifications as the Carters (Gents).

  • at least i don't have to worry about river flooding.

  • Yup, but it's highly unlikely that it will flood out here, seeing as there is the Thames Barrier. Strange how some places that are higher up above the thames compared to us have sirens, though. I just want some sirens round here! lol

  • right.

  • Say what? I can't hear you.

  • I know it is...

  • That looks like a Carten Nelson siren...

  • so cool

  • i live in canvey island (EsseX) and i once lived in a house right next to one of those... then i moved lol

  • if it was in america somone would have sot it with a gun by the 1 minute mark

  • tornado sirens are similar...and i live in america, i happen to love the sound

  • Wasn't sure who made it. There are at least several different companies that I have heard of. Thank you thunderbolt for the info.

  • That is quite possibly the longest and loudest civil alert test of any kind that I have heard! Man must wake up the whole town. Could someone tell me what type of siren that is?

  • I think that is beyond a test, just taking the piss lol!

  • Fuck that when your on nights and trying to get some shut eye during the day...lol

  • rofl, climb up the pole and break it off.

  • i live in essex and my uncle had a siren that one sucks tho holds noted to long

  • lol,its a zombies invasion? or something like that? lol

  • we don't have flood sirens, but i guess u wouldn't need them in minnesota

  • LOL! In england, we have no choice but to have them!

  • where in essex is this i am in bunham send me 2 my inbox

  • Nice

  • Well, obviously to warn the people of an incoming flood. If there is a danger to the local population of damage and destruction from elevated waters, then a siren is used to warn to residents. Then, the nessasary precautions can take place.

  • i live in pennsylvania they have no flood sirens, but when hurricane flood came there was no type of evacuation and they were screwed.

  • should i be finding that funny? Because i do

  • why do you UK guys use flood sirens?

  • We in TX Also use flood siren hear about the Gainsville Tx floods in cook county they have been using them quit a few times this past week.

  • we use our storm sirens for tornado warnings only severe thunderstorm warning no sirens flash flood warning no sirens severe thunderstorm/tornado watch no sirens tornado warning all 8 storm sirens sound we had them one time sound for a severe thunderstorm warning.

  • That's all the British Public sirens though isn't it? I mean factories, businesses, companies and even the population hold them. I know my town has one, Nottingham and Derby have many, the surrounding villages and towns have them. Was there any reason to remove them in the 90's, was it because the Cold War ended then?

  • i saw on the news they evacuated a whole village near sheffield because of the flooding using a ww2 siren like this one.every place in england still has sirens like this but just don't use them often ,if at all

  • No, mostly all UK Sirens were removed in the 90's. Some where kept on to be used as Flood Warnings, such as the one on the News and the video above.

Some Sirens were forgotten, and are just rusting away on top of a Pole or Building!

  • I was extrememly lucky that the torrential rain Britain has had recently did not reach the south of Derbyshire, if it had of done, the River Trent about 700 yds down the road would have burst and flooded my house out, it nearly reached my house in the floods of 2002. Strange, we hear these quite regularly in my area, I think it's from the factories though for some reason.

  • I know the feeling! Filming these are not my idea of having fun!

  • Reminds me off today, driving through my town - They went off, all these poeple started running, then got to another town, sirens doing the same, people doing the same... My heart just meleted, like whoah! Viva Las Floods.

  • Rocketrodder! I am one of the "fortunates!" around when these sirens sounded to warn of impending German air attack. I was 9 years old when War was declared, I heard this noise day in and day out throughout the blitz August 1940 - May 1941. You americans do not know what its like to hear that sound and to know that planes are coming over to drop bombs on your city to cause death, destruction and chaos. I hope to God you never hear that siren used in anger.

  • The only snag is...at least America still uses Sirens! Very few places in England still use them. But like you say...you hear this noise...run like hell!

  • That is a Castle Castings Siren used in the UK for warning of Nuclear Attack 1945 - 1995. It's what every single English person is used to. American sirens are very high pitched and damn well annoying. At least with an English siren, when that goes off you know something really bad is going to happen!

  • Always gotta diss other countries, eh?

Sirens are sirens.. They warn of bad things.

But around here in California, Flash floods are a natural thing. @_@

    BTW, nice vid, danwisbey85
