The cartoon is pretty clean, but they'd have to change the title if they wanted to play it today. And the Religious Right might object to the Devil's Food Cake. I love how the priest is human. Do they worship the same Jesus as humans, or is there a Cake Jesus?
@MrFantabulousMKL Well, she did bake them. That makes her a relative of sorts. A progenitor, anyway. Were all those singing pastries friends and family engaging in a spontaneous outburst of celebration or were they paid entertainers who were included as part of an elaborately-planned catered affair?
Some boob showed these on Boomerang several years ago... WITHOUT the songs. Yep, they cut the wonderful tunes out of these classics. Anathema! I'd love to get all of these on DVD. The entirety of the U M & M/ Harveytoons classics are the cartoons I loved the most in my childhood. Bugs Bunny, step aside.... Old Mighty Mouse cartoons were another set of gems. God, what happenned to cuildhood imagination and fun in cartoons?
@MercuryHatred Ethnic cleansing in Cakeland. And little resistance would have been encountered. Get a load of how all those pastries in the church fainted while Angelcake was being kidnapped. What fortitude!
@todalyweirdgirl I wonder if Little Audrey was able to eat the pastries that came out of the oven after she woke up from her dream. Her laughter at the end of the cartoon leaves that issue unresolved.
VERY RARE original theatrical print- in the "U.M.&M. TV" version, Steve Muffatti's name was omiited as the "other" animator (and he drew the monthly Little Audrey comic book stories for St. John at the time). Mae Questel and Jackson Beck provide most of the voices. The same chorus who sang in the "Screen Song" series is heard here...
You can get dvds with all the cartoon classics on them, it is like a compilation of all the really good ones. I believe this episode is on the one my brother has...
Before this cartoon, I hadn't ever heard of a CAKE of yeast--I had only heard of its coming in jars and in small envelopes. What a wonderful world it was in the sweet, innocent 1950s.
I used to have the VHS tape of Little Audrey including the cartoon "Tarts & Flowers" where it does have the original theatrical opening and closing Paramount logo. My DVD with the same cartoon does have the UM&M opening and closing titles. This was one of the last cartoons under UM&M from 1950.
Harvey Films acquired the TV rights to the post-50 Paramount cartoons including this along with Casper, Herman, Katnip, Baby Huey and Buzzy. Harvey Films was a TV division of Harvey Comics. All of the post-50 cartoons has the Harvey Films copyright plastered over the Paramount copyright appeared on many cartoons. I'm not quite sure if "Tarts & Flowers" might have a Harvey Films copyright on there which is in-between those.
I have DEFINITELY been wanting to see this public domain cartoon with its original Paramount titles for some time! Thank you so much for uploading this, DJLarryT!
