Yeah I'm muslim and I started wearing the burqa about a year ago. I get those kinds of reactions EVERYDAY lol. Although I didn't do the stuff you did. I just go about my business and do what I have to do and the people's reactions just happens. When kids call me a ninja, I either pose to make them laugh or just wave at them. They're so cute. Very interesting - would have been nice to see peoples reactions.
Another possible thing to do would be a less strict dress sense, rather than the entire burka (which is primarily an arab thing) maybe wear a hijab (headscarf) along with normal modest clothing. People might be a little more ballsy in approaching you if they can see your face - although, judging by what other muslim women have come across, expect some silly comments and questions by onlookers.
