Tonic water is carbonated water, it's used to help stumach aches and used to make soda. Food coloring is non-toxic and can be found in almost any house hold in America. Easy stuff to make.

Of course its UV light. never been a secret.

its the nature of the molecule, quinine, present in small amount in tonic water, that absorbs UV light and re emit another wavelenght. no chemistry, no reaction, don't even have to open the bottle.

Almost every form of medicine (and even some vitamins) are unhealthy in large quantities. And many pharmaceuticals (all with an aromatic ring, e.g. paracetamol or aspirin) will glow under UV light. Quinine is used because its an effective treatment for malaria. So outside of tropical areas where mosquitos don't live it's more or less useless AFAIK.

Something normal like Tide or All should work. If you can when you're in the store, take a peek inside the container... if it's blue in color (not sure if all detergents are anyway?) or purplish, it should work just fine.

Interesting, I never knew tonic water would catch black light. Aside from highlighter juice + water (which works very well), also try using liquid laundry detergent. Most should create a glowing blue effect.
