The only problem with this is that Damn Small Linux is not something that the average user wants to run....

Linux won´t make old computers work magically faster, etc. In fact, in my old computers Windows 98 and XP works faster than the new Linux distros (like the lastest version of Ubuntu, etc.)

@Hypogripho I have tried Xubuntu and LXDE and they´re good. Unfortunately they don´t work with less than 128MB of RAM and many of my old computers have 32, 46 and 64. Damn Small LInux and Puppy Linux are the only ones that work for me, and the latter is better I believe.

@isthisnickvalid Ubuntu sucks, only good for the newcomers. DSL? If you have a Pentium II with 64mb of RAM then sure, go for it lol But who can't afford 512mb of RAM nowadays? OpenBox will run great with even less, XFCE will be just fine with that amount of RAM, and GNOME and KDE, just to be safe, add an extra 128mb of RAM and you're ready to go, processor? My sis' PC is a Pentium 4 with 512MB of RAM and it runs great on XFCE.

PD: I am using GNOME, never go over 500MB of RAM or 11% of CPU.

@isthisnickvalid Ah, BTW, Ubuntu is getting heavier who the hell knows why, I stopped using it since Hardy Heron, I think its because of all the unnecessary things it installs and runs by default and how they focused more on how pretty it looks rather than how smooth it runs, only good thing about it its that plugging in new hardware (printers, webcams, etc) is rarely a pain in the butt as it sometimes is in other distros. Other than that, as soon as you can get over that distro :P No hate <3

They're good for tinkering and retrogaming mostly. As in MS-DOS Win98 games. Not that I use them often LOL

But if you try Windowx Xp in machines with 512MB it works really fast, so I don't see the magical thing about Linux anywhere.

A funny thing is that people think their computers got slower and need to buy new ones when in fact is that they filled the hd with crap and their XP is corrupted. Formatting fixes it.

@isthisnickvalid There are lightweight versions of Linux Mint and Ubuntu which don't use GNOME but instead use LXDE or XFCE. For example the new lubuntu 11.04 is pretty light while the new Ubuntu is made for newer computers but still is lighter than Windows 7 and Vista and probably XP also.
