Beautiful rendition of the Aussie classic song by the Aussie classic group at the Aussie classic footy Grand Final (just shame it's the wrong teams:(
I love hearing Australians sing in their own voice- not that I love the Aussie accent, but I hate the way our singers seem to feel they have to put on a fake American accent.
@itufanuf You are right, this is about a rash and tragic decision. My takeaway is that it's about the destructive effect on some Austrailian natives who were forced to face alien outside authority. It's an example of the "Death Before Dishonor" creed.
I just returned from Australia last night. I visited Brisbane for a week and saw the Seekers with Andre Rieu, which made my dream of seeing them in concert (although a brief concert appearance) a reality. I have to say that in Oz, the scenery is beautiful, the people are friendly, and the men are good looking. Cheers to you, Australia, from this American girl from the South.
who is this american guy you are a ignorant yank without doudt my mother in laws partner died last year he was a true Aussie and a smashing guy perhaps someday we will like the yanks like we do the Aussies what a song this is a genuine Aussie song and sung by the best in the buisness
Does this song hold a special cultural meaning for those in Australia? I don't know.. I'm just an ignorant American. By the way, this lady's voice is iincredibly beautiful..
@vimilac Please...enough of the "ignorant American" crap. Don't drag an entire country down to your level. Perhaps if you'd worn out a few library cards instead of planting your fat rear end in front of the TV, you'd be a little better informed.
@vimilac I found some reel to reel tapes in the bottom of my husband's old foot locker. He listened to them thru out his tours in Vietnam. The first song was, "Waltzing Matilda"
@isuckaman You might be interested that in 1959 at an Eisenhower Administration cabinet meeting there was a long discussion about how the movie would so discourage the American people that it might undermine Cold war determination and the will to survive if "the worst happens." The notes are really fascinating -- I don't know of another film that ever do this kind of attention.
I am an American and am proud of that, but when I listen to this song, I really want to be Aussie all the way. I think Australians are the luckiest people in the world.
Simply amazing..I have tears in my eyes listening to this! Judith still sounds in great voice here. I've yet to find any present-day groups having the simple purity Judith and the guys had....
What a wonderful gift the Australians have given the World: The Seekers!
Just read the post that the American 1st Marine Division adopted "Waltzing Matilda" as its official march. Shows how much those Marines loved, respected and appreciated the Aussies in WWII! If anyone has seen HBO's "The Pacific", that Marine Division endured pure Hell, while stopping the Japanese advance at Guadacanal.
@63DW89A Up through the years we in the Western world have fought many wars and how many times have not our soldiers looked over their shoulders and seen a big Aussie standing there and saying,G'day mate, thought we would come along and give you a hand.
@bigmarty56 I'm not australian==not that lucky, they're wonderful people--but I understand that a swagman is a sort of itinerant worker--americans might call him something of a hobo--NOT a bum==who travels and workshis way across that huge Australian landscape.
The guys have aged normally and even well, but Judith looks like they took a time machine back to their 1968 farewell concert, grabbed her and brought her to 1994!
And even outdoors, that voice, the clear and sweet voice.

Still gives me goosebumps, I was there on the day as I have on 33 occasions and is the greatest day of the year....We Aussies do things pretty well and Judith and the boys didn't let us down in 1994.....pity about the result though.....
Yeah, I'm an American but this song is so haunting and beautiful it really has no comparison. It is also so effectively used in Stanley Kramer's masterful film "On The Beach," it's aching longing so perfect for that film of nuclear obliteration. If you haven't seen it, rent it or buy it. It is fabulous.

I'm a 57 year old American male. I'm not fond of soccer, and know very little about the history or significance of this song "down under". What I do know, is that this performance is breathtaking, and the song itself (whatever it means to those who know and cherish it) is All Time. If I knew I could go to a soccer game and hear this at halftime, I'd camp out all night for the priviledge.
@bigmarty56 Amen. I'm also an American male about your age and know nothing about Australian Rules Football. I was YouTube surfing and hit "I'll Never Find Another You" which I do recall from back in '68. But back then I did not realize what a rare talent Judith Durham is. This woman makes me swoon. And I'm way beyond the age that I should be doing any swooning. When you get a minute Google "Waltzing Matilda" it's got quite an interesting place in Australian history.
@euqip D'accord, brother. Judith is definitely "swoonable" at any age! Incidentally, I don't know which version of "INFAY" you found, but the best sounding one is the music video they did where it looks like they're in the studio recording it. The truth is that while this was an Aussie band, the tune was recorded in England. Those 60's Brit engineers knew what they were doing. Four track heaven! I'll investigate this lovely song.
@bigmarty56 I've watched the studio INFAY a bunch of times.
You're right, the sound quality is outstanding. (God bless YouTube) Even in the crazy 60's Judith dressed modestly. I read she even made some of her own clothes. Don't you think Madonna, Britany, and Lady Gaga et al would trade all of their bombastic antics to achieve what Ms Durham is able to do so effortlessly?
@euqip Judith was/is an arist (and a hot one at that). The others were/are wannabees. There's a difference between something that lasts for ever, and something that lasts for a year or two, maybe even a decade, no? My daughter, 24, and who I must admit grew up listening to this kind of music, says to me, "Daddy, why was your music so good, and mine is so bad?" 'Nough said.
@bigmarty56 Not wanting to be harsh on you but Australian Football is not soccer. It is a game unique to Australia and in my humble opinion above all others. Go check out ESPN3.com and they have some games live and on replay there. The finals(playoffs) are on around this time, but I do agree with you that it is a stellar performance. Regards
Amazing performace, brought tears to my eyes and I'm not even Australian. To think, the Aussies could have had this as their national anthem. Advance Australia Fair seems positivley dull and dowdy by comparison.
Hard for a J. Durham/Seekers fan not to enjoy this.... especially after going to wikipedia to find out what the song is about. Loved the smile from the audience at 2:16.
i wish all the "pop singers" of today had 1/100th the talent of Judith Durham. Brittney, Miley, and Amanda can't hold a candle to her. She has a REAL singing voice, not one that has to be improved by electronics.
Beautiful song.. What a super group. They have a unique sound that cannot be matched. They all compliment each other. To like every song they do speaks for their talent and balance. Just a fabulous group with a fabulous sound... of clean cut music... and what makes there music even more enjoyable is that they were "into" and "lived" the music they sang and you can see it in the way they presented it to us...
great! I live in California and I remember singing this when I was a kid in school many years ago, with our teacher playing along on her guitar. Judith has a beautiful voice.
What a great rendition of this wonderful song. I first learned Waltzing Matilda in Vietnam where I was stationed with troopers of the 1st Royal Australian Regiment. I'm a Yank and they had to explain what the words meant to me. We sang it drunk or sober in much the same way as Slim Dusty's version. I spent 10 wonderful days in Australia on R&R and this song was constantly going through my head. This version left me with goosebumps. What a huge voice from such a tiny package! Excellent!
@namvet173abn I am a former Kiwi who also was in the Nam along with the Aussies. We also sung it alot. There is no finer soldier than the Aussie. Two members of Australian Special Air Service Regiment won the Victoria Cross in Afghanistan.
There is a similar version on the SEEKERS COMPLETE COLLECTION 5 cd set but it is a studio version and lacks the atmosphere of this great video. Isn't Judith GORGEOUS!!!!
The song is about defying the system, defying the boss man. Americans wouldn't understand. They are slaves to the boss, to the system, to corporations, to the rich, to the propertied. This is a song for defiant people, not conservatives who protect the powerful.
You're a complete idiot. Oh yeah. Slaves to the boss. Just like we were slaves to the Japanese when we fought by your side... It's hard to tell if you're more ignorant or more pathetic...
Idiot? Read my comment more closely before you pitch a hissy fit. I am criticizing Americans for not having the spirit of Aussies that is exhibited in "Waltzing Matilda." For the record, my mother spent 3 years in a Japanese concentration camp with Aussies, Americans, and Brits. I don't need some loser to lecture me about the Japanese. Sober up.
My God, I just realized...you think I'm Aussie. Sad little boy, I'm an American, an American who happens to admire Australians. Up yours, sad li'l nationalist.
I'm afraid you've only underscored the accuracy of my assessment: you're an idiot. A complete idiot. But good luck fighting "the man..." Maybe you'd be happier living in another hemisphere.

Everything I oppose is your definitive brand of ignorant, juvenile and ultimately bankrupt logic. Utterly devoid of the most basic critical thinking and analysis. Somehow you stumbled through your education avoiding any history or civics. Clearly the experiences and associated life lessons of your mother are utterly, irrevocably lost on you. You know nothing of the Japanese until you've studied Isoroku Yamamoto. He had a much better understanding of American Character than you will ever fathom.

Ha ha ha. I have a doctorate in East Asian history. I teach at one of the leading universities in the world. I read Chinese and Japanese better than you can muddle through an effort to construct a sentence in English. Dream on, loser. You bore me. You started this li'l debate. Now move on...to someone who cares about your angry little tirades.
Lump in the throat stuff. I'm an Englishman with a lifelong affection for Australia. This truly a beautiful version of this special song.
My favourite Matilda memory is from when I was in Sydney on the day of the rugby World final in 2003. They played the song on every radio station at 5pm on the day of the game. God willing I will one day see Australia again.
Felon on-the-run captured & hanged by the English-army, very-sad :(
Can't imagine why anybody bothered composing Advance Australia Fair when 'they' already had-this
There-again, why do we Brits have God Save The Queen when Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life more-appropriate [especially when playing cricket] :)
What a beautiful composition. This is one of the most beautifully written songs I've ever heard. Judith's voice is superb! It soars through the stratosphere...
@terrafirma91 If movie 'Elizabeth [A Ghost-Story]' story-board makes-it past the 'bean-counters' an up-&-coming 'girl' will get the chance to sing this & other classics.
I've only met & watched one singer-songwriter [Helen] in-rehearsal with a voice even-close to Judith; alas she is too-old to-pass for the 10yo tragically-killed at the movie-start.
I remember seeing this in my third grade social studies class when we were doing a unit on Australia. I never thought I'd see it again. Watching this video makes me think of my social studies teacher, who succumbed to cancer several years ago. I'll always cherish these fond memories of my childhood.
This is a perfect example of the power of music to unite. Bless those of you who are depressed or in ill health. God bless The Seekers and The Aussie's. Who could not love them?
When I was a boy of about 10, my Dad bought his first real stereo system. He was so proud of it and one of the first albums he bought was called "Pass in Review" which had many marching songs and national anthems, etc. Waltzing Matilda was one of the songs. I remember vividly how much he enjoyed listening to it. He died way too young at 56. I just turned that age a couple of months ago. Listening to this has brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for this posting.
Judith Durham and the Seekers ...I've been a punk in the 80's, taken drugs for 28 years, been depressed and suicidal for too long, I haven't got a partner, I am a pessimistic person, but these guys' music REALLY touch my heartstrings. They make me cry, they make me smile, they make me singalong with a grumbling voice, they make me FEEL ALIVE. God bless the Seekers!!!
Thanx for your encouraging reply, and yes, I will keep hanging on, for better or for worse. Reactions like yours make me realise the world is still a good place to be, and it is filled with w
I am often discouraged by the general conduct of my fellow man then I think well at least we've got a few true worthy souls like Judith Durham.

Don't you think Madonna, Britany, and Lady Gaga et al would trade all of their bombastic antics to achieve what Ms Durham is able to do so effortlessly?
euqip 1 year ago

Regards

@hblewitt Good of you to be kind to someone---me---who is not fluent in the game. The tune is lovely.

Great old song. Judith Durham is just special. Her voice has a quality that is so moving. There are not many singers who have what she has.

A wonderful rendition of a song that never fails to give me goosebumps. Why Australians would not want this song as their national anthem baffles me.

Bloody brilliant. The "official" Aussie anthem is fine, but this is the _real_ Aussie anthem. Thanks so much for posting this!

Wow!! Unbelievable live performance. Her voice is incomparable...brings me to tears.

We don't have pop singers today they are just noise makers. You cannot beat the 11950/60/70s for true pop singers.

@mytramplady Can't agree with you more.

i wish all the "pop singers" of today had 1/100th the talent of Judith Durham. Brittney, Miley, and Amanda can't hold a candle to her. She has a REAL singing voice, not one that has to be improved by electronics.
owg59 1 year ago 7
Beautiful song.. What a super group. They have a unique sound that cannot be matched. They all compliment each other. To like every song they do speaks for their talent and balance. Just a fabulous group with a fabulous sound... of clean cut music... and what makes there music even more enjoyable is that they were "into" and "lived" the music they sang and you can see it in the way they presented it to us...

@Chickiwi Judith Durham is just one of those singers who can make you feel good no matter what she sings. She's just wonderful.
As a Kiwi, you're no doubt aware of Hayley Westenra.
NZ has a singer for the ages also, she's really something.

Excellent!

mango66666 2 years ago
The song is about defying the system, defying the boss man. Americans wouldn't understand. They are slaves to the boss, to the system, to corporations, to the rich, to the propertied. This is a song for defiant people, not conservatives who protect the powerful.
Ladyrants 2 years ago
You're a complete idiot. Oh yeah. Slaves to the boss. Just like we were slaves to the Japanese when we fought by your side... It's hard to tell if you're more ignorant or more pathetic...
iowa61 2 years ago
Sober up.
Ladyrants 2 years ago
My God, I just realized...you think I'm Aussie. Sad little boy, I'm an American, an American who happens to admire Australians. Up yours, sad li'l nationalist.
Ladyrants 2 years ago
I'm afraid you've only underscored the accuracy of my assessment: you're an idiot. A complete idiot. But good luck fighting "the man..." Maybe you'd be happier living in another hemisphere.
iowa61 2 years ago
Why are you commenting on "Waltzing Matilda?" It represents everything you oppose. Listen to the words and learn. Listen to the WORDS.

Watching this video makes me think of my social studies teacher, who succumbed to cancer several years ago. I'll always cherish these fond memories of my childhood.
