there are plenty of kata out there that will (in my opinion) gain you very little in the the pursuit of actual fighting ability. this however is not one of them. sanchin is a wealth of kinesiology and structure and short close range power development. whatever your chosen art is, this kata will surely benefit you. there is some straight high level voodoo science going on in this thing. if you choose to learn one kata this is it.
I practiced Shohei-Ryu Karate for almost 2 years. I've done Sanchin so many times, that I still remember and can perform it (maybe with not as much precision) despite it being a while since I've actually done in for a test. It's a nice refresher seeing this!
Do not try and steal this mans wallet , he is the real deal , a great martial artist and a very tough man . He might look a little old on the outside but he has a young tiger on the inside . Very nice kata master .
I see the Southern Mantis Som Bo Gen, aspect to this form, except when I practice Som Bo Gen, I do it with a lot less physical exertion, and with the renowned shock power, over isometrics, so I perform it with soft breathing, and a lot more gently, but with great internal force focused in the fingers, and whole body...cheers
Interesting to see the different versions of sanchin. I practice the closed fist version with slightly different routine. I wonder how many versions there are.
just remember, this guy isn't one of those "modern dojo ballerinas", but an Okinawan Karate Master...taught the old way, rough and drilled for years in the fighting aspects of his art til he dreamed them every night.
those finger jabs to the solar plexus could probably kill most MMA fighters, if he used them at full strength
i dunno what to think about this guy. he seems to know what he's doing, but i've always learned you're to keep your back foot straight and your back itself straight as well. neither of which he does all of the time.
@PersoNatalie Hes Very old, When you hit a certain age you will see most of the Elder Practitioners Move to more their body type. Hes very Knowledgeable and a Great Teacher. Hes just Old so...His Body isnt as great as it used to be.
His internal dynamics are truly amazing. Is this kata taught only with nogare breathing or is ibuki used, too? In Kyokushin as karateka age they tell us to leave the ibuki breathing to the young. The nogare is quiet with the same effect if done correctly, as the Sensei's body shows. Very impressive kata!
This is master Gushi Ive trained with him. ( im only 18 but ive been training since the age of 11 ) He is a master Hes not going that fast actually sanchin if done correctly shouldnt be fast at all because your body should be tight and tense. except when you strike your arms flow in a way that is hard to explain.
@warriorfire8103 Umm... IDK its hard to learn without a master there to show you how and what to do correctly. Its a strict learning process especially this kata. I was lucky enough to start my training off with Alan dollar ( look him up ) and Then when he retired I trained with what I believe to be his successor John Felipe.
@HaikuWar I know and agree with what you say. I just feel so restrained by my location. Louisiana doesn't have many options when it comes to the martial arts unfortunately.
@warriorfire8103 well I mean if you have to travel and learn a little and Practice on your own. I mean the old masters would learn Sanchin and practice it nonstop for like a years or even years. Also good Uechi ryu schools are hard to find. To much watered down American stuff now adays.
Peculiar convergence of fists in frontal double arm thrusts which are not typical for Uechiryu, but a very good performance of Sanchin. Looks powerful.
I hate to say this, but he barely eats anything, drinks coffee like crazy and smokes, a lot. But 60 plus years of dedicated training seem to have made up for all that!
@lollipopfop Hanshi Gushi is VERY fit! His attitude is very subtle and unassuming of a master. I've only had the luck to meet him once through my Master, Hanshi Yamashita. But still yet I wouldnt dare anyone to mess with him! d^_^b

this must be by far the most difficult Kata. In the exam you only literally get your ass kicked by the tester and can do nothing about it.

Beautiful...it looks very much like Hangetsu in Shotokan.
Karate is amazing...I love how people who know nothing talk so much trash.
They have missed the whole point of training.

Could this guy beat a 6ft 5in, seventeen stone guy who's lost the plot. Get realistic about martial arts. It's violence what ever way you cut it.

One of my all time favourite masters, a real gem, a karateka with the true spirit.
He's barely taller than I am (5 feet) but I've seen him take down a large man with just a side-step and two fingers to the back of the collar.
