  • Yeah, well he's a member of the CFR, Kissinger and Rockefeller's little world government think tank. They're very good actors, and all the world's their stage. The only sincere Dems are Kucinich and Gravel, but Ron Paul has a better grasp of the economic issues which are at the very foundation of what ails America. The federal reserve is a private corporation. They lend us our own money and charge us interest on it. The constitution says that only congress shall have the power to issue money.

  • I know a woman who makes minimum wage at a day care. Her husband landed in adult day care after a brain tumor operation. He was no longer able to fix machinery and work. She has diabetes but cannot make enough money to afford to buy fruits and vegetables she needs to keep herself healthy. She doesn't have insurance. She postpones medical care and may wind up blind, amputated, or with kidney failure, costing you much much more later.

  • This was an awesome speech, and Senator Edwards is very committed to helping working people. Wonderful!

  • Agree more needs to be done to support education. However, I do not believe that Edwards will do anything to help. He has the resources and already could have, but, has done very little. Why should anyone beleive he will?

Why don't you just have the FED credit all poor Americans with $1,000,000 in their bank accounts. Oh, and then why don't we remove the evil selfish CEO's and replace them with good unselfish minimum wage workers. Then we could have "caring capitalism", and an economy just as good as North Korea's. God Bless Him!! Vote Edwards!!!!

  • Its not a question of a free lunch. Its a question of having you've earned through years of hard work.

  • It is this free lunch mentality that says that the government can just raise the minimum wage, go more into debt, and raise taxes on the rich, and not suffer any type of economic backlash. If prices go up or there is higher unemployment because of government meddling politicians will never look at what they did to mess up the economy. For politicians like Edwards it is always the evil Corporations fault. When will Americans stop looking to the government to solve all of our problems?

  • Antiwar, We look to the government to solve problems of the employment market for two reasons. 1. The corporations look to the gov't to set the rules the way they would like them. 2. The gov't creates the laws which are the rules of the game.

    Now to your point of a free lunch. How is paying people more for the work they do, giving away a free lunch? They are working, that is why they are earning minimum wage, we are just raising the value of that labor.

  • The government does things using force. A workers value to a company is only what they can accomplish. When I learn a new skill, or I become a better worker, my value goes up. What if the government raised the value of my 1975 car, with 220,000 miles, from $300 to $3,000. Will honest people really trust the government's new valuation? I would never sell the car. Likewise if the government raises the value of labor artifically those people at the entry level position will be cut back.

  • I only get 500 char, but there are concerns in trying to micromanage an economy, and making the price of an individual car determined will have plenty of consequences. That however is not what anyone is arguing for. What we are talking about is a floor for all labor. If you are working, you can't be working for less than X. This is a very large complex issue though, and your arguments here are too simple compared with the complexity.

  • I don't think it is that complex. If we repealed the minimum wage law and McDonald's started paying their workers $3/hour everyone would quit and go work at Wal-Mart, or Burger King. You are only paid what you are worth. If I was a great singer, and then I became below average, should I still be paid the floor wage? The government doesn't know what any given workers skills are, and so there will always be some making more than they should make.

  • I'd rather have people in poverty making more then they're worth then a CEO of a major company. The problem with getting rid of the minimum wage is that cost of living and inflation keep going up while the minimum wage has remained stagnant. This means that minimum wage workers have actually received a pay deduction in the last 10 years or so. How is that fair? Raising the minimum wage doesn't hurt the companies either. They make more then enough money to pay for it.

  • Inflation effects companies just like it effects minimum wage workers. Companies have to pay higher prices for their resources and capital they need. How is it fair to force a business to pay workers more than they are worth. There are costs that go into production anytime you raise that cutbacks must come somewhere. If you cut back the CEO salary, you will get a bad CEO, and hurt the overall business. Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream tried this, and they learned their lesson.

  • I agree with you that big corporations are to supported by government inflation. The government creates money, and they spend it. Then the big corporations get the money next, and spend it before the prices go up. That is why many of them make so much in profits every year. Whereas you and I, and probably the place where we work, didn't get the new money, but still have to pay higher prices. Reduce the government's power and all businesses will have to compete freely like everyone else.

  • Antiwar, what you are calling for is anarchy. The only power the government has is in laws. If you decrease their power you are say remove all laws. Is this really what you mean to say?

  • When I say reduce the government's power I mean reduce it to the level of just punishing the bad guys that want to take away our natural rights to life, liberty, and property. We used to believe this once, a long time ago. Read the Declaration of Independence, or the Constitution. The Constitution outlines strict powers for the National Government. It doesn't grant the National government power to be our parent, educator, and be the policeman of the world.

  • Exactly. Rush and Hannity don't believe in the Constitution, and the Declaration. These documents were made to limit the powers of government. If you give the government the power of God in order to solve all of our problems, (and we have basically done this), they will abuse that power. As for your other point, I guess for some people getting the government out of controlling our property (money) = happiness.

  • What? You said property, so you are equating happiness with money. Or you are quoting right wing points. Raising the minimum wage is not the "Power of God". If you really think this is so simple, honestly anti you aren't really thinking.

  • Seriously, where in Article I Section 8 of the Constitution do you see the specific power given to Congress to impose a minimum wage? If the power isn't listed there doesn't Congress have God-like power, (ok maybe dictatorial powers) in the sense that it can do "whatever it wants to do." Bye-Bye freedom. How is it "right-wing" to follow the Constitution? There is no left-right wing here. If we don't want to follow the Constitution we have created a tyranny.

  • Yes, if the government takes away 33% of my money every year, and causes prices to go up because of inflation this makes me unhappy because of the injustice of it. I pay in a lot more in than what I will get out of it. Do you honestly think the Federal Government does a better job of planning your retirement and health care than if you had all of that money back? I don't think that being unhappy about giving my hard earned money to the Federal Government makes me a selfish pig.

  • Also, to use your analogy, what we're talking about here isn't the great singers or the average singers or even the below average singers. What we're talking about is the bottom of the barrel bad singers. And yes economic theory and how the economy works is very complex. That you don't think so shows your lack of understanding on the subject.

  • economic theory is only complex because bankers, economists and politicians made it so to give themselves jobs. It really is simple. You have resources and you need a service. I am able to provide that service, but I need some resources. I believe my service is worth X, but you only think it's worth Y. So go hire someone cheaper, and i'll be laughing when your Z falls down.
