You never know though, even if they change completely they could always do a Metallica somewhere down the line and go their garage style for a bit.

You can't really take Jani's new band as a comparison, it'll be a totally different band.

The songs that I've heard by Jani's band actually sound more like Sonata Arctica than Unia did...at least in my opinion. Mikko Harkin is in the band as well, not to mention the bassist from Norther/Wintersun and the singer from Stratovarius too...check some of the songs out if you get a chance.

Frankly, Paid in Full got me into Sonata Arctica, mainly by his vocal skills just amazed me, (Prior to that I listened to Dir En Grey on repeat for the past 1-2 months). Paid in full being from Unia, my views are that it's an amazing album, but as are the bands earlier works. After purchasing the entire discography, I'm currently addicted to songs from their Ecliptica album such as Replica and Letter to Dana. I don't see why the change is much of a issue to fans. Sonata will always be Sonata.

I think it sucks that Sonata changed their style, but at least Tony was honest about why. However, I think when a band changes musically they really should start a new band because using the same name when it doesn't feel like the same band anymore really isn't fair to the fans.

if you stop liking a band, then don't listen to their new stuff. that's what I did when The 69 Eyes became sell-outs and went all Hollywood. Comparing to most music today Sonata is very unique and their change was neither too quick nor too big, it gave the fans time to adjust. Also since the band members have switched like 10 million times, change is almost unavoidable. Besides, do you really think they would have any uniqueness left if they still went on with their more power metal style today?

That's why bands like Maiden are my favorite bands, they usually stay the same. I can understand why Sonata wanted to change though because deep down they aren't really Metal guys at heart.
