Wow. H e really blew Vivien Leigh off, huh? She was drowning and he couldn't be pulled in after 19yrs of marriage? I am disappointed in his choice of words on this matter. Maybe he is one of those egotistical actors that only thinks of himself? He seems rather self centered like most people who choose acting as a way to continue to be a show off. Callous of him. I know he is dead now, and I am not speaking ill - just giving my opinion.
@laurarpeter Well let's hope you don't ever find yourself in his position, of choosing between helping someone that cannot be helped, destroying your own life in the process, or saying I can't do this any more'. Only have one life, you can't tie yourself to a sinking stone just because some third party who doesn't understand thinks you should.
Retread, after reviewing my comments I have to agree with you that I was harsh and judgmental. It's not like me and I have no excuse for my criticisms of their life together. I feel like a putz. I am trying to think back three months ago of why the hell would I feel that way to write it? Sheesh, I think I shall pause before posting in the future.
I like how Brits approach acting. It's meant to be fun and meaningful. But at the end of the day you're back to yourself. Okay, maybe Vivien Leigh didn't see it that way, but, I do like Olivier's approach to life.
i also love that olivier didn't do method acting, it's so egocentric. acting is a craft; skilled, professional, inspired but to be worked at. he was so disciplined. 'give the human heart the knowledge of itself'. he was so classy.
di you notice that as soon as you got out of the house, it feels like there's a camera following you...anyday anytime..esp if you are a good looking boy/girl, man?woman...People look at you ,stared at --and you just can't help it but do as you please but play as if you don't see them, not notice them eyeing at you. life is acting dear!!
The true story of the witty crack between Hoffman and Olivier didn't have anything to do with method acting. Hoffman was going through a rough time, his marriage failing, so he partied hard for two nights, not getting any sleep, and Olivier's comment may have been related to Hoffman coping with his personal life. Acting as a therepy. Olivier also said "I'm one to talk, jumping 15 or so feet in Hamlet!"
The appearance of Joan was, and is, so grotesque. I don't know how Olivier could stand to look at her, especially after having been with the exquisitely beautiful Vivien.
Have you even seen Vivien in the 50's? She looked dreadful. Whoever did her make up in A Streetcar Named Desire should have won the Oscar if they had it in 1953.
How is it offensive? Because he played a black man? He nailed Othello. He was a better Othello than Laurence Fishburne, a black man. Olivier developed the accent and mannrisms to look and feel like an outsider, which is where his insecurities are rooted. It was an ingenius performance.
I've never been a hard drinker!!..........The comment that he's old fashioned is a bit daft, but it is quite funny when as Richard III he shouts a horse, a horse and then they close up on him with the wig.
I didn't realize he did so many incognito appearances on film and stage, or that diverse of characters either. He was quite a guy. Thanks for this most interesting interview.
I found the interview on an old VHS tape of mine, I evidently recorded it back in '83...If I knew YouTube was coming in the future, I woulda recorded more stuff and saved more of those old tapes!
I think being a Method Actor may help peformers, but it doesn't make them.
I am sure Day Lewis or DeNiro could be great without the method, they just choose to use it. There are many yountg method actors who are very poor. Olivier is amazing, they don't make them like that anymore.

His Narration for The World at War was Absolutely BRILLIANT. He created a Benchmark that I personally don't believe has ever been bettered since.

What a class man he was. Many of today's actors could learn a thing or two from him.

Vivien's beauty may have faded in the fifties, but she still looked better than Joan Plowright.
Maralovesyou2 2 years ago
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Olivier loved Joan & he loved Vivian.
