Traded my 2009 Toyota Yaris Sedan for a 2012 Fiat 500 Pop manual. The Fiat is a much nicer car all around. Feels made of a single piece. Very solid. Handles and rides extremely well. Very quiet. Great fuel economy (averaging 35-43 mpg). Very fun to drive. And, my car insurance was MUCH cheaper! Very happy! No regrets.
@tacoeatingzebra I agree with you 100%. I love my Golf TDI and it is very easy and cheap to boost the performance without sacrificing the fuel efficiency. The ride is nice and quiet. The only thing that could use some improvement is reduction in body roll when going into turns. The car has given me very few problems so far (149,000 miles and counting).
I'm getting my Fiat 500 Sport in red soon! I own a 05' civic lx, I'm a little worried about reliability I heard good and bad. I wish it will hold up as good as my civic! I guess we will wait and see 2 years from now
It's such a cute, happy, fun to drive, well-made little italian car! Compared to that much, all of it's little niggles don't seem to matter. It's not a car you buy with your head, it's a car you buy with your heart. If you can't understand that concept, you have no right whatsoever to be around cars.
@ramblergarage they're critical of everything... and they rate stuff wrong and for the wrong reasons. I read a review on the Wrangler in a Consumer Report mag back when the TJ was relatively new and they gave it a bad review because of ride quality, carrying capacity, value per dollar, and reliability... NONE of which are reasons to buy one in the first place. You buy a Wrangler because you want the best, cheapest to mend, easiest to modify offroad vehicle currently produced. end of story
Love the cute euro styling, but this car makes no sense compared to other options out there. Fiesta and Accent are both larger with usable back seats and get BETTER fuel economy from their larger engines. Kind of a pointless car for people purely interested in small cars because of their economy. This just seems like another smart fortwo in my eyes. Stylish, unique, but with questionable reliability and abysmal fuel economy.
@palebeachbum I don't think "abysmal fuel economy" is an accurate description for this car. While it's true that other bigger cars get better gas mileage, this one performs pretty decently. In terms of style, it looks way better than all the other comparably priced cars. I think this is going to be a niche kind of car that people in tight urban areas will want, as its smallness will allow for an easier time squeezing into tight parking spots.
This guy failed to mention why Fiat disappeared from the USA in the early 1980's.
Why did they disappear?
They were crap with almost no reliability.
I remember those cars I sure would not buy one of these. I can buy a Built in USA car, such as a Hyundai which is made in Georgia. They are bigger, and get about the same mileage. The Hyundai is a bit more affordable too.
Hyundai has about 80% USA components and assembly. Fiat, Built in Mexico and has roughly 20% USA made parts.
@Checkerholic your idea of what makes an "american car" is deeply flawed. a hyundai is a korean car and a fiat is an italian car... also, if your idea of a cars reliability is based on cars made 30 years ago, well, then there is no point arguing with you anyway.
i'm exploding with large laughter, too much funny. XD
Hyundai is worthless.
Anyway, Fiat Engines "FIRE" will be built at the companys Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA). The GEMA plant, located in Dundee, Michigan, will produce the 1.4-liter, 16-valve Fully Integrated Robotized Engine (FIRE) for use in Chrysler Groups growing fleet of fuel-efficient vehicles.
thiswill include Fiats innovative advanced technologies to reduce engine emissions and improve fuel economy
Since I just got done driving the fiat sport, fit sport, mini (not the s) and the Fiesta.. I can agree with others.. he's not mentioning the "weee" factor in driving the 500. it's also more comfortable and quiet than the fit and the fiesta. The mini, unfortunately, stalled TWICE when I tested it, so it was fun, but no thank you on that one.. I'd also like to point out the Fit sport is about the same price as the 500 Sport.. the fit has a little more HP but it's mileage is 27/35.
I spoke to a few mechanics, Italian cars are not maintenance friendly nor are they very reliable. If you have money to burn on this novelty, buy it. Otherwise, stick with a reliable car that doesn't require "cuteness" to get your business.
@oldschool1 you mean american cars are not reliable. in europe these cars are driven hard, on (i said hard on lol) and off road. and most owners i know have well over 200k miles
@MrDolcevita1 I'm sorry but for a car of that size and weight, it's mpg is quite dissapointing. And have you seen the new hyundais? They look nothing like the old boring hondas and toyotas.
I just test drove one the other day, it's nothing special....but at $19,500.00 for this? I think not, a Honda Fit or Fiesta would be a better choice. Don't waste time on this car.
Wrong about the EPA ratings. City is 33 not 30 as in your report. I doubt there are larger cars that are automatics that are better rated at highway.
What you fail to mention is how much fun this car is to drive! I'm glad to see this car in the USA. We need more interesting, fun, fuel efficient cars in the USA.
haha, funny comments below, you americans are proper jerks!!
the Fiat 500 is no crappy VW Beetle/Smart, its a huge success in Europe, so americans should love it for a city car. You guys like the ugly Mini, so why you so negative?? idiots
This is the other extreme of going too small, why not get a sub-compact 5 door hatch so you could actually use the rear seats when needed ???

One month ago today I bought my new Fiat. Marks it's 23rd day in the shop with no promise of return. Talk about "buyer's remorse"!
At least Fiat has lived down it's, "Fix-it-again-Tony" image, since they can't seem to fix it at all, now!
Warn your friends!
