I always thought Andy Warhol took a page out of the Fluxus artists, especially the part where the people who view his work are the art. Every once in a while, a complete lunatic accidentally gets publicity and somehow get's labeled a genius. There are literally thousands of people just like this guy wondering the streets talking to themselves while asking for spare change.
It's not hard to see why so many people think Warhol was a pretentious dick. But they're wrong - he was a great comedian. He just had an unusual sense of humour. Everything he did was funny and entertaining, or else it was so unfunny and so unentertaining that it was hilarious and fascinating. The real pretentious dicks are the mugs who pay two million dollars for one of his paintings. The joke's on them.
@PereUbu72 how come the people who buy his paintings are pretentious dicks and why is it a joke? i dont mean any disrespect or trying to start an argument i'm just curious.
They seem like a group of pretentious, artistic, self-aware trendsetters who have nothing better to do then lounge around, be cool, and take drugs...god i really wanna be like them
@dontxtalk andy is renowned for this; he wasn't actually being pretentious or 'too cool for school', his personality was just naturally very offbeat and introverted - he was often mistaken for being deliberately self important and aloof. he was actually bedridden and isolated for much of his childhood, and he cited this period as important for his personality development. interestingly chorea was a complication of his illnesses - side effects being severe twitching and pigment blotchiness.
I don't think he's being 'pretentious' at all, he's just obliterating stupid, bland questions with sarcastic answers. I find it hilarious. Paul Morrissey is funny too, but he gives up the act by laughing so much. Andy manages to keep himself together.
@Tvor1128 I think most people would assume so, or think that, but look at from a situational and time period perspective. Back then, no one thought that "design" for everything from tomato soup cans to band tour posters could be art... Now it's an entire artistic design field, sure he didn't do anything that could be compared to the "classics," but he still changed the perception or the way we think of art...
I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just saying, think of it from another view point.
I think the head twitch is an affectation...to go along w/ the vagueness, the general "affliction" of being so out there, so cool you're an afflicted genius mystery. ...like, "gee whis...he's got st. vitas dance..."...then you see him later and he doesn't. typical artsy histrionics in this era, or I dare say, any era...goes w/ the territory...on the rock...w/ the other monkeys. it worked for some. it worked for andy.
he doesn't say one thing that proves he is intelligent, in this interview or any other, yet because art snob wannabees have continued the myth that he was a genius for pissing on copper and calling it art, you will have comments on his youtube videos for all times, saying how smart he was in the vid. he twitches his head trying to look cool just like thom yorke has fake verbal tics and makes clicking sounds while he talks. its pathetic what some people do to seem different.
@kristolio1 damn, are you sure about that? I heard the dude did stuff around the Factory, but I never heard that he was addicted to anything strong. If he would of been addicted to Heroin, I don't think he would of lived too long, he would of died young like Jean-Michel Basquiat... I would like to know if you can prove me wrogn, please.

Dear commentor...Lady GaGa was a FAN of Andy Warhol...she is the one riping off the REAL artists....she knows the formula they used to get famous.....
As the French auteur Godard has stated, many American filmmakers rhyme information and repression, with trash and culture. Warhol was one of those directors. While his screen tests and maybe a handful of his silkscreens and films are intriguing, the majority of his work is self indulgent.
i just read the book "Pop" about andy warhol and in it, the book describes how andy had trouble because he always thought he was ugly, i've always thought andy warhol was such a handsome man, not conventional looks, but beautiful looks
@CamilleBowie1970 i think that andy was good looking in the 60s but after the assasination attempt, his health and aspect started to have serious problems
@cinematicfanatic Regarding the artist/rock star analogy, I see what your saying about not wanting to appear as a celebrity. But there's also something disingenuous about an artist who articulates, somehow, that he/she doesn't want recognition; grovelling in the 'don't look at me, I'm an artist' headspace. Warhol went through years of corporate design and low paying exhibitions before he found his voice. When he did he was more than ready. Artists can feel proud too.
@cinematicfanatic It's certainly true that he loved the limelight, and he eventually tried to live his entire life that way and it destroyed him. But imo there are obvious themes to his work: Celebrity, Consumerism, Advertising and Mass Production. "In the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes." A prescient comment if ever there was one. Such is celebrity for the sake of celebrity. It is as ugly and vacuous as a Bacon painting is dark and terrifying (speaking of the pope portraits.)
@relaxingmusic101 Compassion..? As in emotional understanding..? Okay...
Or are you saying that I don't "Get It"?If that's the case then ha your right, I guess I'm just an non-evolved bourgeois drone..Warhol was clever in his commentary on consumerism and mass influence of media. I acknowledge his place in the pantheon of great artists, hes an "icon" or a brand name rather ha...But yeah this video sickens me..Pretentious Twats..The whole lot of em'..
@kenrben They have a lot of problems but I recognize they are people and don't hate them. I also happen to like Velvet Underground and Nico's music a lot.
@relaxingmusic101 Hate is a strong word, I don't hate anyone :) i'm acutely irritated by some people though, I hope you realize the behavior their exhibiting here is just that, an art exhibit if you see them as troubled in this vid.. I'm sympathetic to their real life problems though, There was some sordid shit going on to be sure, Nico was nuts...I just think the whole Factory philosophy and "scene" is rather exclusive and pretentious.. I fucking love Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground though!
Andy Warhol was a fortunate individual who was in the right place at the right time. Can you possibly imagine his art to be orgiinal? I imagine he used ideas from others and presented them in a way that was just tinged enough for mass appeal. The mystery of his character remains a facade used to project the faux-importance of his art. Again, Andy Warhol just got lucky. The true artists, as always, remain in the gutter and unappreciated. Warhol IS vanity.
@raarset1 "Can you possibly imagine his art to be orgiinal"
Well when you think about their is no such thing as originality.
"The mystery of his character remains a facade used to project the faux-importance of his art."
He was probably naturally like that because he was insecure about being gay, but he never chose to act out on it because he was very religious (he died a virgin). Whether or not he was a true artist is just an opinion
yes LSD was involved in filming this, except that andy never used drugs and sombody put acid in the eggs that ate for breakfast and everybody got high.
you guys are so stupid...Andy Warhol is the biggest douche ever....He sacrificed innocent people for his own "Fame". Not to mention, his films are ssssssssssoooooo lame. The most self-indulgent prick of his era.
I can tell by the comments here that a lot of people don't 'get' the genius of Andy Warhol. But then ...I'm sorta glad it's that way, it makes it all the more special for the people who do.
@Nmbrz No, it comes as a result of the genius of Andy Warhol and the contrast between people who do get it and people who don't get it. How could something be 'special to you' if it weren't for it 'not being special to others'? Day and night contrast one another, they aren't at the 'expense' of one another. That special feeling isn't the end of the world or anything...I think you may be taking my comment a bit too seriously.
what are you talking about. he said himself that he only wanted to be an artist to be famous. And if you can show me that there is anything intelligent behind his work at all I will give you a cookie
@bonbon1995 If you think giving vague answers while being surrounded by groupies makes you a genius then you are an idiot. If this was anyone other that a dude that painted soup cans then this would be on fail blog.

relaxingmusic101 1 year ago
@relaxingmusic101 Compassion..? As in emotional understanding..? Okay...
Or are you saying that I don't "Get It"?If that's the case then ha your right, I guess I'm just an non-evolved bourgeois drone..Warhol was clever in his commentary on consumerism and mass influence of media. I acknowledge his place in the pantheon of great artists, hes an "icon" or a brand name rather ha...But yeah this video sickens me..Pretentious Twats..The whole lot of em'..

@kenrben They have a lot of problems but I recognize they are people and don't hate them. I also happen to like Velvet Underground and Nico's music a lot.
relaxingmusic101 1 year ago
@relaxingmusic101 Hate is a strong word, I don't hate anyone :) i'm acutely irritated by some people though, I hope you realize the behavior their exhibiting here is just that, an art exhibit if you see them as troubled in this vid.. I'm sympathetic to their real life problems though, There was some sordid shit going on to be sure, Nico was nuts...I just think the whole Factory philosophy and "scene" is rather exclusive and pretentious.. I fucking love Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground though!

i love how vague he is and the fact he gives absolutely nothing away

Whether or not he was a true artist is just an opinion

my word, Nico's voice is like the darkest honey.. "Does he call them psychadelic?"
"No, ..he calls them home movies.." -lol. Brilliant.

you guys are so stupid...Andy Warhol is the biggest douche ever....He sacrificed innocent people for his own "Fame". Not to mention, his films are ssssssssssoooooo lame. The most self-indulgent prick of his era.

I can tell by the comments here that a lot of people don't 'get' the genius of Andy Warhol. But then ...I'm sorta glad it's that way, it makes it all the more special for the people who do.
rayholtz 1 year ago 3
@rayholtz that special feeling comes at the expense of an entire culture
Nmbrz 1 year ago
@Nmbrz No, it comes as a result of the genius of Andy Warhol and the contrast between people who do get it and people who don't get it. How could something be 'special to you' if it weren't for it 'not being special to others'? Day and night contrast one another, they aren't at the 'expense' of one another. That special feeling isn't the end of the world or anything...I think you may be taking my comment a bit too seriously.

he is so spectacularly vague. And yet so amazingly intelligent at the same. It takes a genius to be able to say so little.
